Following Gillian Anderson‘s recent comment that she’s read Ryan Coogler‘s “really fucking cool” “The X-Files” pilot, David Duchovny is furthering speculation of a Mulder and Scully return.
“There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point,” Duchovny tells THR regarding a potential appearance in the reboot.
“I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script,” he notes.
Duchovny adds, “I wish them luck. It’s a great frame that Chris Carter came up with all those years ago — a believer and a nonbeliever tackling these mysteries. I always thought it was endlessly generative.
“It really comes down to the writers room for me. Because we had great writers. We had Vince Gilligan, the Morgan brothers, Howard Gordon, Darin Morgan, and others. We were blessed to have a writers room that could generate 20 to 25 movie ideas.”
Duchovny continues, “‘The X-Files’ was a movie idea every week. So I hope Ryan doesn’t have to do 25 [episodes] and only has to do 10 or 12. And I hope he’s got great writers, because that’s really the key to making that show work.”
Coogler is writing and directing “The X-Files” pilot, which Hulu ordered in February, with Jennifer Yale (“The Copenhagen Test”) sering as showrunner.
Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard) and Himesh Patel (Tenet) will star as two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler are executive producing through Proximity Media alongside Yale and “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter.
“The X-Files” originally ran for nine seasons between 1993 to 2002, with two additional seasons arriving in 2016 and 2018. 218 episodes were produced in total, along with two feature films: 1998’s The X-Files: Fight the Future and 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
