Fresh off the unprecedented success of Sinners, Ryan Coogler certainly has enough good will to do anything he wants with his reboot of “The X-Files” — but the return of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Mulder and Scully would guarantee fan support.
Speaking at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, over the weekend, Anderson revealed that she’s “had a few conversations” with Coogler, which could lead to her reprising her iconic role.
“The pilot script is really good,” she commented. “So I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be really fucking cool!”
Anderson added, “It’s something different. It’s different and it’s special, so give it a break.”
Hulu officially ordered a pilot for the “X-Files” reboot last month, with Coogler set to write and direct.
Danielle Deadwyler (The Woman in the Yard) will star. Jennifer Yale (“The Copenhagen Test”) serves as showrunner, with “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter producing.
In the pilot, two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
“Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary,” Coogler previously teased. “We’re going to try to make something really great, and make something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans and maybe find some new ones.”
“The X-Files” originally ran for nine seasons between 1993 to 2002, with two additional seasons arriving in 2016 and 2018. 218 episodes were produced in total, along with two feature films: 1998’s The X-Files: Fight the Future and 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
Anderson can next be seen in Jane Schoenbrun’s queer meta horror movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, in theaters August 7.
