‘Project Wight’ is a Viking Horror Game Where You Play the Monster

One of my favorite films that I feel is 1) vastly underseen and 2) vastly under-appreciated is 13 Warriors, the John McTiernan film from 1999. It followed a Muslim Ambassador who travelled to the North and encountered Norsemen. He joins them on a strange quest where he encounters the mythical and ferocious Wendol, a pack of humanoid cannibals who come and go with the mist. It’s a fantastic movie that feels wonderfully epic and I wish that it would find the love it so richly deserves.

Perhaps Project Wight, the upcoming project from ex-DICE and Overkill’s David Goldfarb, can be the catalyst for a revival in Viking horror? Being developed by The Outsiders, the game takes place during the Dark Ages and follows an alternate history where Vikings live in the same world as strange four-legged creatures who are intelligent and ferocious. However, you don’t play as a Viking who is tasked to kill off these creatures. Rather, you are one of these monstrosities and you use your powers to fight back against your impending extinction.

Godlfarb introduces a sneak peek which shows the mechanics of the game as well as showing off some combat. It’s definitely not a finished product but it looks incredibly solid and I would play the hell out of this game! Just check out that moment when the Wight jumps off a cliff and then soars into a Viking encampment, landing and emitting a tremendous roar. How badass was that?!

Thanks to PC Gamer for making me aware of this game!
