VHS Tapes With Complete ‘Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh’ FMV Sequences Found [Video]

Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh fans during the pandemic have had the pleasure of reliving the cult classic with Paul Morgan Stetler (the actor who played Curtis Craig in Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh). Stetler has been doing interviews with the cast and crew, revealing trivia about the game, and even delving into the original Phantasmagoria. And now, thanks to one fan, Stetler has announced that tapes have been found of what could be the only physical surviving footage of the game’s FMV sequences.

The story goes that back in May of last year, one of Paul’s Twitter followers found five VHS cassette tapes containing all of the movie scenes (with dialogue) from A Puzzle of Flesh. With those tapes, the potential is there that A Puzzle of Flesh could be given the remaster treatment with brand new transfers of the FMV sequences.

As such, Stetler has launched a Kickstarter (which you can already happily guess the results) to fund the cost of digitizing the footage for a “baby step” towards said remaster. Now obviously, that A Puzzle of Flesh remaster isn’t a guarantee. Ignoring the rights issues and a company willing to do the remaster work (though Nightdive Studios would probably love the challenge), the tapes might not be in the best condition. At first glance, the tapes have some artifacting, though that might be due to the VCR that the person who found the tapes was using is, well, old.

Nevertheless, nothing ventured and nothing gained. If they manage to transfer the footage, it’d be an awesome time capsule brought back for fans, with the potential for a remaster. If not, well it was worth a try. And hey, PC gamers have dealt with worse when it comes to games that were long thought to have been impossible to recover/remaster.

While we wait for the work to be done, do check out Stetler’s YouTube channel, Conversations With Curtis, to see those behind-the-scenes stories on the making of Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh.

Or, if for whatever reason you’ve never played A Puzzle of Flesh before, hit up GOG or Steam to get in on it.
