Bloober Team Avoids Commenting on Recent ‘Silent Hill’ Rumours
After the Silent Hill rumours dropped earlier this week, you’re probably wondering what Konami says in response to all of this. Well, other than the DCMA notice taking down the screenshots, that would be it. However, the focus once again turned to Bloober Team, who didn’t exactly put to rest any speculations that they were working on something Silent Hill-related.
You know the story by now: Bloober Team entered into a “strategic partnership” with Konami last year, and were almost immediately set upon with rumours that they were involved with Konami’s goal of resurrecting Silent Hill. Bloober Team denied that they were involved then, and in an interview with IGN at Polish games conference Digital Dragons, Bloober Team’s CEO Piotr Babieno reiterated that. Sort of.
Babieno stated that he cannot comment on the team’s current projects, but hopes to make an announcement soon. He added that the developer’s unannounced project will “still be a Bloober Team title”, even if it’s made in partnership with another company. Babieno also explained that future Bloober games will be bigger and more gameplay-focused than in the past, and will not be “walking sim”-type experiences.
“We can’t comment on anything we are doing because we appreciate our relationship with our partners, of course. So we can’t [say] anything. We will make an announcement about our future projects as soon as we can. So then you will know much more.” Chuckling, he added, “Officially.”
The interview was more than just addressing rumours. Babieno also talked about Bloober Team’s experience working with a license holder, as was in the case of Blair Witch. The CEO again referenced one of Bloober’s upcoming projects, stating that his company’s approach is to make games on its own terms, even if it’s within someone else’s franchise.
“I would say that it’s hard to work with someone who [owns an IP you’re working on], but we are always talking with those licensors, [saying] ‘Guys we would like to use your license, but we would like to tell our own story.’ If we are not able to tell our own story, if we will not have creative freedom, it doesn’t make sense, because Bloober Team will not make a great game,” Babieno said. “If you are in a prison, you will not be able to fly. So that’s why we are trying to only [make] those titles in which we are feeling, ‘OK, it will be a Bloober Team game, not someone [else’s].’ So even on the project we can’t talk [about], it will still be a Bloober Team title.”
Again, Babieno didn’t exactly confirm or deny that the developer was involved with Silent Hill in some capacity, and may very well be playing the metaphorical game of hyping up their unannounced project. The fact that Babieno later stated that the company was aiming to change the kinds of games it makes in the future while moving away from “walking sims” does get the brain percolating.
As with almost everything Silent Hill-related these days, we’ll just have to wait.
