Standalone ‘The Last of Us’ Multiplayer Game in the Works, Details Coming Next Year

Published

on

With the earlier announcement for The Last of Us Part I, some fans were probably wondering about the multiplayer component from the remastered 2013 version of the game, and if it’d be part of the remake. Well, The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann addressed this during the title’s Summer Game Fest reveal, announcing that while the remake will not contain the multiplayer component, the Naughty Dog team is currently working on a standalone multiplayer game with a brand-new story and cast of characters.

Druckmann teased the game, saying that it will offer Naughty Dog’s “biggest online experience”. Druckmann also posted to Twitter what’s presumed to be concept art for the standalone title, which will see additional details coming sometime next year.

This isn’t the first time that the rumoured multiplayer game has shown itself. Back in 2020, leaked footage of a multiplayer component for The Last of Us Part II surfaced online called Factions. Even before that leak, Druckmann alluded to a The Last of Us multiplayer game in September 2019, saying that Naughty Dog planned to release a new multiplayer offering after its work on the sequel was complete.

“You will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II,” it said. “When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan as Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.”

The Last of Us Part I is scheduled for release September 2nd for the PlayStation 5. A PC version is also in development.
