Folk Horror Adventure Game ‘Carnival’ Out Now on Steam [Trailer]

Published

on

Developer Beyond Booleans has more folk horror gaming available now with Carnival, their new atmospheric folk horror point-and-click adventure. As an added incentive, Carnival is available with a 15% launch discount until September 8. The game’s demo is also available for the “try before you buy” crowd.

Inspired by Lovecraft, Don’t Look Now, Midsommar, Kill List, and The Wicker Man, the story for Carnival centres around journalist James Maynard, who arrives in 1930s Venice to cover a controversial road bridge project. However, his investigation spirals into something far darker. Ancient carnival traditions hide disturbing secrets, and a hideous core to the notion of Venetian pride. Complicating matters is James’ narcolepsy, which makes every conversation, every witness encounter, and every memory unreliable.

Clocking in at around 4-5 hours of gameplay, Carnival features atmospheric low-resolution pixel art graphics, multiple locations drawn from Venice itself, and developing relationships with NPCs, allowing the player to influence events in the game, leading to one of the game’s two main endings. There’s also a secret ending for the fastidious players.
