Time to get the John Williams score playing, as the digital release of Limited Run Games’ Jaws: Retro Edition arrives February 13 on the PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
New to this Retro Edition are two ways to play: Retro and Enhanced. The Retro Edition allows players to use save states and rewind, as well as features achievements and trophies. In addition, there’s also a music player featuring the soundtrack by composer Shinichi Sakamoto, as well as a gallery.
Meanwhile, the Enhanced Edition is completely new, and features a massively expanded, multi-chapter adventure with nods and homages to all four films. Players have new quests and objectives, as well as new abilities and weapons for your boat and diver. You’ll also face more challenging enemies, and more ways to take them down.
For those not in the know, Jaws was originally developed by LJN, and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System way back in 1987. The game plays a bit loose with the original film as its inspiration. Players are tasked to kill the eponymous Great White Shark, but in order to do so, you must build up your speargun’s power. To do that, you sail around until you are randomly hit by something, which will then switch to you scuba diving to destroy jellyfish, sea rays, and mini-sharks. Collecting conch shells from fallen foes will allow you to increase your speargun’s power. Eventually, after tracking Jaws, you’ll face off against him, where you must drain his health before ultimately ramming him with your ship to finally sink him.
