While we await the return of Castlevania in Belmont’s Curse, Konami is unfortunately preparing to close a separate chapter of the series. Originally released back in 2018, shut down in 2020 and resurrected the following year for Apple Arcade, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls will be shutting down on September 3.
Konami posted the news earlier this week, thanking players for playing Grimoire of Souls. “Since its launch on Apple Arcade in September 2021, the game has continued to be supported by many players. However, we have decided to terminate the service on September 3, 2026 (PDT). We would like to express our gratitude to all of our players for their enthusiastic support throughout the years. The entire development and operations team sincerely thanks you for being part of this journey.”
When the game was released to smartphones, Grimoire of Souls initially relied on in-game currency and microtransactions. When relaunched on Apple Arcade, the game made the switch from microtransactions to a subscription service.
Obviously, fans have responded to the news by asking Konami to reissue the game, either returning it to smartphones, or bringing it to a service such as Steam. Whether Konami will do either is anyone’s guess.
Taking a cue from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Grimoire of Souls returned the series to its side-scrolling roots, featuring 60 levels, a wide variety of equipment, daily and weekly missions, and more. Players could unlock characters from past Castlevania games, including Alucard, Simon Belmont, Maria Renard, Charlotte, Shanoa and more, with each featuring a unique combat style.
The latest game in the series, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, will launch October 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. A Nintendo Switch version will arrive “later in 2026.”
