Terrible remake. Fun movie.
One of the Christmas horror movies I make sure to watch every December is 2006’s Black X-Mas, the remake of THE Christmas horror movie: Bob Clark’s Black Christmas.
As a remake of Clark’s proto-slasher masterpiece, which favored suspense over gore and kept the killer bone-chillingly mysterious, Glen Morgan’s film is no doubt a fail on almost every conceivable level. It tosses aside everything that worked so well for the original, replacing suspense and character development with buckets and blood and giving us so much insight into Billy’s past that it’s impossible to actually be scared of him.
Plus he’s yellow. Like literally bright goddamn yellow.
That being said, Black X-Mas is a whole lot of fun as its own holiday slasher film, playing out like Black Christmas if Black Christmas had been made during the ’80s slasher boom rather than in the early ’70s. It may be a complete bastardization of the original, but I challenge you to not have fun with its particular brand of wacky holiday insanity.
In any event, YouTube’s Trailer Guy just turned the remake trailer into a ’70s-style retro trailer, putting a grindhouse twist on what is in many ways a true exploitation film!
