Exclusive Premiere for Finntroll’s ‘Under Bergets Rot’ Music Video!
Bloody-Disgusting is extremely proud and excited to bring to you the exclusive premiere of the new Finntroll video for ‘Under Bergets Rot’, the new video produced and directed by Finnish film and animation company Animaatiokopla! This is the second single off of the new album, ‘Nifelvind’ (album review HERE) and it ranks as one of the coolest videos that I’ve seen in a LONG time! Watch and enjoy!
Routa, guitarist of Finntroll, says the following about ‘Under Bergets Rot’:
Yes, ‘Under Bergets Rot’ – video is definitely a very special video from Finntroll. We have been thinking of doing an animation video for years actually. But for some reason we never did it, until now. With the release of the Nifelvind, album we were asked to do 2 video. Century Media gave us free hands to choose from which ever songs we wanted. The first video was made for ‘Solsagan’ and was made by Finnish company Vasara Films. As we have always done our music videos by ourselves, as me being a writer and director with the full support of the rest of the band of course, it was very difficult to let someone else do it. Even though the basic concept came from the band, it still didn’t feel right. And after the “Solsagan” video we weren’t 100% convinced about letting someone else do our videos. So we were thinking what to do with the next video…

We decided to do the second video for the song ‘Under Bergets Rot’ and this one we were thinking about doing by ourselves as usual, just to get the right, Finntroll-spirit into it. We got the idea of doing a video that’s happening in this weird, out of this world jazz-club, where we would play as the house band. The story in the song is more or less about the song that this dude hears, and even though he hasn’t heard the song before, he knows it and gets mesmerized by it. And while he’s under the spell of this ancient song, he feels that only moments have passed, but then notices that years have gone by. So we wanted to take these ideas of time passing by and metamorphosis and add that to the video: this guy goes to this club, there’s a weird band playing and he sees all kind of weird things and eventually ends up being one of them. That’s about it in a nutshell. We were supposed to do this like any normal video, with real actors and such, but we were about to go on the European tour. We realized that there’s no chance we would have time to do this and there was no chance that I was going to edit it while on the road, haha. Then we thought that the only way we would get the video done is let someone else do it. We thought, ”What the hell…this time let’s do the animation one and let’s go nuts with it.” I called a few places in Helsinki that do animations and actually found out that one of our really old friends is doing animations nowadays. So we told her what we wanted and told her that the company she’s working, Animaatiokopla, will have free reign with the video. We only hope that they’ll go over the top with it. Then we went on tour and after a month we got back and saw the final video and we were really satisfied with it. It has all the elements we wanted; weird things that go well with the music and even some gore. And most importantly, we finally got the animation video, haha. I wouldn’t be surprised if we do another sometime in the future, but I can’t promise anything yet. Anyway, Enjoy!
Synthwave outfit GUNSHIP has released a new official music video this morning for their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” featured on the soundtrack to Corin Hardy’s (The Nun, The Hallow) supernatural horror film Whistle.
To bring it full circle, Corin Hardy directs the music video himself, incorporating previously unseen footage from Whistle. More specifically, the new music video features an extended sequence from the film.
This collaboration builds on GUNSHIP’s longstanding relationship with Hardy, who previously contributed vocals to the band’s track “Cthulhu.”
“Working with Corin is a total dream,” said GUNSHIP. “He’s an old friend who we bonded with over our love for cinema and music, and we were honored to have our song featured in the film. After the Whistle premiere, we were chatting over a pint, and he told us about a beautiful pseudo ‘one shot’ sequence he was heartbroken to lose in the final film. We suggested resurrecting it and using it as a music video. Corin got it immediately, and the result is perfect. It’s heartbreaking, haunting and pure 80s noir soaked.”
Corin Hardy added: “I wanted Whistle to feel like a horror movie I might have watched around the late 1980s, alongside films like A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Lost Boys, and The Breakfast Club. Films steeped in teen-angst and heightened feelings. Music was such a huge part of creating the romance of those cinematic worlds. Gunship’s synth-drenched cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time After Time’ was always top of my list. Their unique heart-on-your-sleeve sound was the perfect choice for a key moment in the movie. To come together post-release and create this extended music video is simply the cherry on top. Dan, Al & Al (Gunship) have provided the film a real companion piece in the world of Whistle… it makes me want my MTV again!”
It’s a fitting collaboration, as music serves a narrative purpose in Whistle. Music, the director told Bloody Disgusting, was a means of immersing viewers in this world and its characters’ perspectives. Hardy even touched on this particular track: “So in a way, the music you’ll listen to is effectively what Chrys is listening to, which is her dad’s record collection. Then there are other songs like the Gunship track, which is a Cyndi Lauper cover, which is more like Rel’s [Sky Yang] music. It comes in when we have a sequence in Rel’s romantic heartbreak moment. So yeah, I made a character list of who might be listening to what.”
Whistle sees a misfit group of unwitting high school students confronted with mortality when they blow a cursed Aztec Death Whistle, setting a terrifying chain of events in motion.
