But lets not forget we’ve got a few good months ahead of us before we need to even consider those titles. Let’s focus on what’s here right now: BUFFY continues one of her weirdest seasons yet, the third issue of Lapham’s del Toro adaptation THE STRAIN, Kirkman’s newest title THIEF OF THEIVES, and a bunch more. Read on for the skinny…

Severed #7

severed7

PUBLISHER: Image
PRICE: $2.99

The Low Down: “In 1916, a boy runs away from home in search of his father. But along the way he meets a salesman with sharp teeth and a hunger for flesh. SCOTT SNYDER (AMERICAN VAMPIRE, BATMAN, SWAMP THING), SCOTT TUFT and ATTILA FUTAKI (NYT Best-Selling-Artist: PERCY JACKSON) comes the most terrifying horror series of the year. Be there for the thrilling conclusion.”

The Feast: After issues of teasing and tension building, the shit has finally hit the fan for our young hero, Jack. Snyder and Tuft have managed to craft an extraordinary horror story that is legit scary. You will find yourself yelling at the book, hairs will stand on the back of your neck, and you will have nightmares. Something this good could only come from Scott Snyder.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #6

buffy96

WRITTEN BY: Andrew Chambliss
ILLUSTRATED BY: Georges Jeanty
PUBLISHER: Dark Horse
PRICE: $2.99

The Low Down: “The uptick in the zompire population has the SFPD on Buffy’s trail again-but this time, they need her assistance. However, Detective Dowling must settle for a little help from the bleached-blond vampire Spike, as Buffy has become distracted by a rather personal problem that will lead her to Robin Wood.”

The Feast: After last issue, who knows what to expect from season 9. SPOILER ALERT. With all that wacky dream shenanigans behind us, we can move onto the bigger news. Buffy is preggers! How this will fit into the season, I have no friggen clue but it’s bound to make things interesting.

Hack/Slash Vol. 10: Dead Celebrities

hackvol10

WRITTEN BY: Tim Seeley, Benito Cereno
ILLUSTRATED BY: Daniel Leister, Ariel Zucker-Brull
PUBLISHER: Image
PRICE: $16.99

The Low Down: “Cassie and Vlad face off against a celebrity killer and their star struck fans, an all-powerful goddess, and Victor Crowley, star of the HATCHET film series! Meanwhile, intrepid former teen detective, Cat Curio makes her play to join the crew. Collects HACK/SLASH #5-8 and HACK/SLASH ANNUAL 3: HATCHET/SLASH”

The Feast: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Hack/Slash is a horror-heads wet dream. All those movie killers you love put up against a “well-dressed” babe, plus some good old social satire, you owe it to yourself to buy this!

Batwoman #6

batwoman6

WRITTEN BY: J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman
ILLUSTRATED BY: Amy Reeder
PUBLISHER: DC Comics
PRICE: $2.99

The Low Down: “Artist Amy Reeder and inker Richard Friend join the Batwoman team with this new arc, as the epic “To Drown the World” begins!
Six lives, inextricably linked in the past and present, each on a collision course with the others: Batwoman, fighting for duty and vengeance against a threat of arcane power. Detective Maggie Sawyer, investigating a case that could end her career. DEO Agent Cameron Chase, commanding a vigilante she despises. Colonel Jacob Kane, clutching at a life that’s slipping away. Maro, a new villain corrupting Gotham City. And Kate Kane, wrestling with decisions that will test her loyalties.”

The Feast: With new artist Amy Reeder taking over for J.H. Williams III, she’s got A LOT to live up to. A new artist always has the task of filling in the shoes of those that came before, and Reeder has some mighty big shoes to fill, I’m talking at least size 16.5. Though we may lose some of that nice contrast between inks and watercolors, based on the preview images, Reeder looks like she can walk the walk. It’s also a new arc, so jump on board if you’ve been skipping this one.

Ferals #2

ferals2

WRITTEN BY: David Lapham
ILLUSTRATED BY: Gabriel Andrade
PUBLISHER: Avatar
PRICE: $3.99

The Low Down: “The blood will splatter as David Lapham continues to re-define horror storytelling in this Twenty First Century reimagining of the werewolf mythology. Don’t look for silly silver bullets and moon transformations here – only vicious, animal fury and lust as the secret of the Ferals is slowly revealed. Officer Dale Chesnutt is hunting a monster but he’s about to find out that the creature has set its sights on him and the mysterious animalistic woman sharing his bed. And somewhere in between the two, the normally quiet town of Cypress is being turned into a bloodbath. The mystery unfolds as amazing artist Gabriel (LADY DEATH) Andrade and gore-scribe David (STRAY BULLETS) Lapham take us someplace we’ve never been before and pray to god we never have to go back to. Available with a Regular, Wraparound, Gore, and special Slashed Retailer Incentive cover by series artist Gabriel Andrade.”

The Feast: Blood, guts, nudity, and werewolves. What more could you ask for? Lapham has been doing all he can to make sure that classic horror monsters are not forgotten in the midst of teen-horror popularity, and so far Ferals stands out as among his best work. Although many elements of the first issue seem familiar, we’re eager to find out what Lapham has planned for this Avatar piece.

Memorial #3

memorial3

WRITTEN BY: Chris Roberson
ILLUSTRATED BY: Rich Ellis
PUBLISHER: IDW
PRICE: $3.99

The Low Down: “Em and Schroedinger are desperately trying to find Peter, which brings them to the ancient tower of Babylon…only Babylon isn’t so much a what as a who. And just when they think they’re about to get some answers, a host of shadow warriors shows up, grabs Em, and high tails it across the plain. Except Em has a few tricks up her sleeve and things don’t go quite according to the shadows plans. Do they ever?”

The Feast: What do you get if you mix fairytales, kid’s stories, theoretical physics, magic, and horror? You guessed it, Memorial. This book combines so many different elements, yet somehow has a definitive direction that leads to sheer enjoyment. This could be the next Locke & Key. Stay tuned for an interview with Chris Roberson later this week!

Frankenstein Agent of SHADE #6

frank6

WRITTEN BY: Jeff Lemire
ILLUSTRATED BY: Alberto Ponticelli
PUBLISHER: DC Comics
PRICE: $2.99

The Low Down: “Frankenstein and The Commandos head back to Vietnam to take out a rogue super human whom Frankenstein fought beside back in 1969! Meanwhile, The Humanids stage a revolt in The Ant Farm, and Nina and Lady Frankenstein are all that stands between them and total chaos. But they soon discover other deep, dark secrets hidden in S.H.A.D.E. City”

The Feast: With news of Lemire’s departure from the series, it’s hard to get excited about these next few issues. It would have been a real treat to see where Lemire could have taken Frankenstein, but instead we’ll have to settle for what we’ve got.

Showcase Presents: Ghosts Vol. 1 TP

showcaseghost

WRITTEN BY: Various
ILLUSTRATED BY: Various
PUBLISHER: DC Comics
PRICE: $19.99

The Low Down: “From the 1970s comes this value-priced collection of classic ghost stories, featuring stories like:
“Ghost in the Iron Coffin”
“The Tattooed Terror”
“Death Held the Lantern High”
“The Dark Goddess of Doom”
“The Haunted Hero of Saint Helena”
“The Screaming Skulls”

The Feast: DC actually released this dirt cheap anthology a few month back but had to recall it because they left out a page…But they’ve stapled the page into all the copies they got back, and are now reselling them (just kidding). This is a real steal! For only twenty bucks you can snatch this 500-plus pager full of classic ghost tales.

Thief of Thieves #1

theives1

WRITTEN BY: Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer
ILLUSTRATED BY: Shawn Martinbrough
PUBLISHER: Image
PRICE: $2.99

The Low Down: “Conrad Paulson lives a secret double life as master thief Redmond. There is nothing he can’t steal, nothing he can’t have… except for the life he left behind. Now, with a grown son he hardly knows, and an ex-wife he never stopped loving, Conrad must try to piece together what’s left of his life, before the FBI finally catch up to him… but it appears they are the least of his worries.”

The Feast: Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer working together? Don’t mind if I do! This book does not need our endorsement, we know it’s going to be a winner, so don’t be a loser, and make sure you pick this up on Wednesday.

The Strain #3

strain3cov

WRITTEN BY: David Lapham
ILLUSTRATED BY: Mike Huddleston
PUBLISHER: Dark Horse
PRICE: $3.50

The Low Down: “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather scrambles to prevent a possible epidemic and find out what caused the deaths of hundreds of passengers on Flight 753. Terrorism? Chemical warfare? An airborne disease? None of the likely candidates have reared their heads, but as the first night since the incident at JFK International Airport falls on Manhattan, the question is . . . what will?”

The Feast: Lapham is doing an incredible job setting up this series, with two killer set up issues, but now I think we are all ready to get down and dirty with some vampire tongues. After two slow-paced starter issues, you can bet your behind this one is going to suck you in (god I love vampire puns).

‘You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive’ – IDW Dark’s Next Horror Comic Will Make You Question Reality

Published

on

Five friends. Four houses. One perfect life. Bloody Disgusting is excited to exclusively announce You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive, a brand new horror comic from IDW Dark.

From Eisner-Nominated writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and rising horror artist Heather Vaughan, You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive is described as a “paranoia-laced, socially-conscious, horror mystery that will leave you questioning reality, and reveal that this crafted world is more of a nightmare than the idealistic dream they were expecting.”

Phoebe Joplin has never questioned the world her parents built: a secluded community where she and her friends were raised to be smarter, stronger, and better than anyone else. No distractions. No dangers. No secrets. Until the night of their graduation.

When one of them dies under impossible circumstances, Phee starts to pull at the edges of her perfect life—and what she finds is something far more terrifying than she ever imagined.

Because this place isn’t a sanctuary. It’s a cage. And no one who discovers the truth ever leaves it alive.

Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing (Batman – One Bad Day: Clayface, Star Trek: The Last Starship) co-write the upcoming IDW Dark horror comic, featuring art by Heather Vaughan.

Jackson Lanzing said in a statement to Bloody Disgusting, “You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive is in many ways a spiritual successor to our last creator-owned horror, The Principles of Necromancy – a dive into the promise and consequence of playing god with the blood of innocents. But the Hivemind book this reminds me of most is Clayface: One Bad Day. This is a deeply human story with intensely raw emotions – five best friends and their five mysterious parents, tearing one another apart for the promise of some impossible glory that’s waiting just beyond their darkest actions. We’re thrilled to be bringing this story to life with our long-time partner in crime, editor Heather Antos, at IDW Dark – and we’re particularly excited to give our Clayface fans a new, brutal and emotional horror made just for them.”

Adds Collin Kelly, “We’re deconstructing a feeling that seems universal these days; our elders have a death grip on their power, without any intention of giving it up to the generations that come next. YNLTPA is about growing up with the limitless potential of the future… and realizing how much it’s a lie we’ve been fed to keep us under the yoke of the past. Bringing this brutal experience to life is our artist and co-creator, Heather Vaughan, who brings an incredible amount of humanity to our cast. But it’s in our youthful leads that Heather’s art really shines – you are going to fall in love with these young people, even as they go through the worst experience of their lives. What we’ve all crafted together is going to be tragic, painful, but above all else, sincere – with a future so uncertain, there’s only one thing we can trust: you’ll never leave this place alive.”

“Some horror stories are about monsters in the dark. YNLTPA is about realizing the monsters raised you,” previews Senior Group Editor Heather Antos. “Working with Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly on this series has been a dream in the darkest possible way. They’ve built a story that’s layered, brutal, and deeply emotional, and every issue gives artist Heather Vaughan opportunities to push the art into places that feel both haunting and deeply personal. Some horror comics will keep you up at night…this is one that will stick with you for years to come.”

The first issue of You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive goes on sale October 14, 2026! Make sure to pre-order at your local comic shop by September to guarantee a copy.
