‘Venom’ Will Boast a Dark and Powerful Carnage

Sony is already a few weeks deep into production on their Spider-Man spinoff, Venom, which stars Tom Hardy as the title character. In a behind-the-scenes video, Hardy’s personal trainer teases an incredibly powerful supervillain in Carnage.

“What the world is going to see is one of the darkest, most powerful supervillains that Marvel has ever created. It’s going to be carnage.”

It’s still unclear who will portray Carnage (read about the character) and his human persona, Cletus Kasady, although Riz Ahmed was rumored for the role.

Targeting a release next October, Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer is directing the film also stars Michelle Williams,  Scott Haze and Jenny Slate.

Here’s the full video in which the trainer gleams about Hardy’s work ethic:

“Most people, you give them the choice, they will always take the easy option. ‘You want more? No, I’m OK.’ But not Tom. There’s always room for one more.”

  • I nominate Caleb Landry Jones. If Jim Carrey wasn’t anti-violence anymore, I’d vote for him too for the role.

    • Necro

      Nice choice there CJ!

      • I’m assuming you’ve seen Antiviral? CLJ can really play a sickly, psychopath. Perhaps he’s typecast as such now, but Carnage could really work well for him in a big budget role.

    • Samuel

I don’t understand why you and others have a hard-on for post-puberty Macaulay Culkin because that’s what Caleb Laundry Jones is (he’s also a nobody since I had to google him). He’s a teeny-bopper version of Carnage. Watch Riverdale if you’re not old enough for real Carnage.

      • You sound unreasonably upset. You OK there? Your nerd gate-keeping is rotting your social skills.

Don’t get pissy because someone makes a suggestion based on their familiarity with an actor’s work and range. CLJ isn’t an A-lister, but who gives a shit? Do we need A-listers only? He’s played deeply unsettling characters in a lot of his work, perfect for an unhinged psychopath.

I’ll pull out individual issue collection of Maximum Carnage over Riverdale, thanks sweety.

        • Smooth Moose

He was fucking sick in Twin Peaks: The Return

        • Samuel

look at you, trying to justify your third-rate suggestions. Don’t be so upset that I can’t get behind your CW reject actor suggestions. You’re a lowest-common-denominator entertainment consumer – we need people like you to watch the crap stuff. It’s all good.

    • James

Caleb is an excellent actor. I would definitely watch him as carnage.

    • Samuel

Because obviously people care soooo much about what you think, you pathetic loser.

      • You still sound so upset. GG upvoting your own comment lol

        • Samuel

And what are you going to do about it loser?

          • Continue to laugh at how serious you’re taking an internet discussion about the casting of a superhero movie villain.

          • Samuel

Seriously, what are you going to do about it? What CAN you do about it you pathetic loser? Go back to eating feces. As you were.

          • lol

  • Glad to hear. Hopefully Sony learned from The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro.

  • My top choices to play Carnage are:

    -Richard Brake
    -Cameron Monaghan
    -Crispin Glover
    -Jackie Earle Haley

    • Frank Gambino

      crispin glover is like 60

    • Jada Maes

Not a bad list, espe after seeing Brake as Doomhead.

    • Samuel

Richard Brake is the only HALFWAY decent choice and I emphasize the word “halfway”. His range is untested and while it’s an unoffensive choice, it’s not exactly inspired.

But Cameron Monaghan? Soon as I read that, I knew your opinion doesn’t count for jack. That guy is a wannabe actor in a childish and cringey TV show. Gotham is a desecration of anything to do with Batman. Even the actors on it are third-rate, borrowed from the dredges of failing shows on network television. If you’re going to hire Morena Baccarin or Ben McKenzie for your show, then you really aren’t planning to make a good show. Cameron Monaghan is just another illustration of what’s wrong with the show: an over-the-top, imitating and irritating but never actually convincing, wannabe Joker.

Crispin Glover was inspired casting in Charlie’s Angels. That was 15 years ago. He’s past it and we’re past it. Another wrong choice.

Jackie Earle Haley? Again, you’re picking from the $5 clearance bin, showing that your thinking is stale and hackneyed. He was already a memorable villain once. And then forced to do a more over-the-top villainy with Freddy Krueger. Now you think he’s a good Carnage? C’mon. It’s like you’re trying hard to LOOK like you know nothing about movies.

      • Bill Agans

I call bullshit. Gotham is an awesome show. Cameron is great as Jerome. The Joker is an over the top character.

      • Are you trolling? The entirety of your comment shows that you haven’t seen these actors in very many films, and are judging them by your opinion on the specific films rather than by their actual acting capabilities.

        • Samuel

I’m not trolling but you’re definitely a low-IQ moron. I demonstrated all of my claims and opinions with SPECIFIC call-outs to shows/movies that those actors have been in. I gave evidence of my opinions in short. WTF did you do? You can’t just make claims without proving them. I proved myself but you apparently lack the basic capacity to even attempt that for yourself.

    • James

Jackie would be a perfect choice.

I still think Scott Haze is gonna be carnage though.

  • I wonder just how “independent” of the MCU this is when they are using the Marvel Films card at the beginning of the promo. I would like to see them at least maintain enough of a sense of continuity that they could integrate the efforts if SONY decides in the future that they want to be part of the larger property.

    • I wonder if they even asked Marvel Studios if they could use it, because creative head Kevin Feige insists that Venom isn’t set in the MCU (despite what Sony apparently wants us to believe).

      • Samuel

Kevin Feige’s end is nigh. He’s out of ideas and luck. His contract may initially be extended past 2018 but Avengers Infinity will disappoint, as will the follow-ups and he will be kicked on his rear, straight out the Marvel door, in due course. So his opinion need not be treated as the Holy Bible.

        • He (and Marvel) certainly have more credibility than Sony in this situation, especially since they literally control the MCU. You being butthurt by their films doesn’t change the situation.

EDIT: I love that you seemingly upvoted your own comment, XD

          • Samuel

Eh, I enjoy the Marvel films for what they are but they could never make a convincing Carnage or even Venom film. There’s a reason why the best Spiderman film is still a Sony film (Columbia, owned by Sony now) – it’s Spiderman 2. It’s a REAL movie, it’s not just good by the lowly standards of comic book nerds. It’s GOOD. Period. Marvel Studios under Feige can make frothy flicks that look attractive and peppy, have fun trailers, but little substance to back any of that up. No pathos, no REAL sense of fear or loss. They have their own kind of credibility but you’re clearly beyond your depth if you think Feige can do justice to Carnage.

          • You are creating strawman arguments for a straightforward situation. As previously mentioned, Kevin Feige and Marvel control the MCU and he doesn’t have a track record of dishonesty (unlike Sony). Your opinion on their films is irrelevant to their credibility.

          • Also, you keep upvoting your own comments to give the illusion that other people agree with you (which is… bizarre).

          • Necro

Yeah Darkknight that’s what narcissistic people do!

          • Samuel

LOL – look at you, keeping on saying the same thing like anyone cares. I’ll do what I want. Deal with it. Go back to watching your parents have sex you sick pervert. Something tells me that’s all you’re good for. You’re so bothered by my comments that you have to keep sending me private messages too. What a pathetic loser.

          • Blocked. And to any passing readers, there are no private messages. This user is obviously trolling.

          • Samuel

Seriously, stop sending me private messages about how much you like watching your parents have sex. It’s sick and disgusting, you’re a freaking pervert!

        • I’m curious as to your reasoning on this one. We haven’t seen anything from any of the films you mention, so it’s a bit difficult to even pre-judge them. The movies we’re getting so far seems to have been doing just fine (while I will admit they aren’t always equal quality, but then again it is nice to have different tones rather than movie-after-movie that all seem like the exact same thing being done again). So I’m wondering what you base your prediction on regarding Infinity War and the films to follow.

          • Samuel

It’s conjecture based on a few things, but it is conjecture at the end of the day (obviously). The first troubling sign is Feige’s over-reliance on the Russo bros. Their creative wells are bound to run dry soon if they haven’t already. Joss Whedon’s lasted all of one movie.

Portions of Civil War and especially Winter Soldier were just… poor. But at least Civil War did have major redeeming qualities.

Secondly, as the MCU expands, it rambles. I found the latest Thor movie to be slightly try-hard with its humor (not atypical of Taika Waititi) and the film had very little substance. No meaningful conflicts and the new characters were insipid and hackneyed.

      • Bill Agans

They don’t have to when they already have the rights to Spider-Man & all his characters.

      • I’m trying to remember, though, if the logo is in front of the FOX movies or not. Maybe they still have an attachment to them as properties even if they don’t fall under their umbrella. I’ll need to check a couple of the X-men films again at some point to see if they use the logo on them.

        • No, the Fox films and TV shows still use the old logo. Before now, only the MCU films have used the updated one.

          • Thanks for doing the homework for me. I don’t know if the appearance of the new logo is a result of the “arrangement” between SONY and Marvel then or if this was, perhaps, a mistake by the group that the promo clip was likely outsourced to. They’ve been pretty clear on both sides that Venom is outside the MCU, as you said. I wonder if they are still doing some coordination to keep the possibility open for more crossovers in the future.

Honestly, I can’t picture Disney being all that wild about taking on Venom with the rest of the MCU, since if he’s going to be done right, he’s likely an R-rated property, which he ought to be. Maybe Disney is open to the idea though, if there’s enough money to be made. I think the House of Mouse tends to think about profit first. And they do have a history of working with subsidiaries to release more “adult oriented” fare, like Splash back in the 80s.

    • Nahuel Benvenuto

      the mcu is bad

  • Christopher Nickerson

Does that mean the creature in the pod with Jake Gyllenhaal multiplied while they sat waiting to be rescued?

    • Samuel

Your comment is…not funny. As much as Life was not a good movie.

  • zombie84_41

for the love of god dont fuck up this movie or carnage hes one of my all time favs

    • Necro

      No joke there Bro!

      • zombie84_41

I have huge faith in this movie this is something I been looking forward too and been dying for, for a long time.

  • Necro

I could get behind Evan Peters or Caleb Landry Jones as ‘Carnage’. Well whoever they wind up picking I hope they play a psychotic f**ker really well! I do like Tom Hardy as ‘Venom’ as well. This is going to be rated R yeah?

    • Samuel

Nope, not Evan Peters. I’ve seen his range enough on American Horror Story, he’s just not big screen worthy. He barely keeps his head above water on the TV series. And Caleb Landry Jones, I had to google him, looks like post-puberty Macaulay Culkin (and that’s…really not a good look). You seem to be craving some teeny-bopper version of Carnage, but most of us want a REAL villain opposite Tom Hardy. I think Riz Ahmed will do well, he’s a fine actor with a big screen presence, though I wish he looked more imposing. Another option would be Walton Goggins. Out of the box idea? That would be Jason Isaacs. Any one of these have 10 times as much talent and right to play Carnage than your Macaulay Culkin-wannabe suggestions.

      • jurgmandr

Walton goggins would be an excellent kasady/carnage.

      • Bill Agans

Evan Peters is a great actor & has been on the big screen a couple times already. Remember Kick-Ass, DoFP, & X-Men: Apocalypse? He was in all 3 of them.

      • You still sound upset.

        • Necro

Yeah that’s usually how narcissistic people act!

          • Samuel

You’re so butthurt that I destroyed your pathetic “opinions” that you resort to calling me names to give your a tiny sliver of relief. You’re still a pathetic loser who knows nothing about movies or actors.

          • Necro

Well it looks like I was right in calling you a narcissist because you waited a month to come back at me with that lame ass comment! Only narcissistic people hold grudges like that! And I didn’t resort to calling you names like you just did to me so not only are you a narcissist, you’re a hypocrite as well!

By the way you did see in my replied comment that I actually agreed with some of your suggestions? It seems to me after reading your replies to not only me, but some of these other people as well that you’re the “pathetic loser” here!

          • Samuel

If you agree with my suggestions, then why are you fighting with me? That’s typical narcissist behavior. Stop being a pathetic loser and grow up. Just because your parents were narcissists doesn’t mean you have to be one. You’ll make enough enemies with people you actually DISAGREE with, so why make enemies with those you AGREE with? Are you a narcissist?

          • Necro

I wasn’t fighting I just said what I saw in all of your replies to other people, which was narcissistic behavior. You know no one is right except you! No matter what they said, myself included, you talked to them like they can’t have their own opinion. And guess what? They vary! There’s a lot on here I don’t agree with but I don’t resort to disrespecting people cuz I disagree. I didn’t call you a “pathetic loser” like you did me, I only resorted to calling you that cuz you said it first. And by the way my parents were killed when I was 6 months old and I never knew them.

          • Samuel

Necro, every time you bring up the whole “Oh, you replied to me after a WHOLE MONTH!!! This is such a big deal!”, you come across as very, very stupid. I don’t care enough about Disqus to log in every day. Sometimes I won’t log in for months, and then I’ll respond to something that was said a while back. So what? I wasn’t stewing on it for that long you thick idiot, that’s just when I bothered to get round to it. You come across like a melodramatic gaylord every time you bring it up, and your complete ignorance of the semantics of narcissism tells me you’re a little…slow… and that’s putting it very nicely.

My advice? Stop posting your crappy opinions online and focus on your education. Focus on reaching even below average intelligence. Focus on not being a huge embarrassment to yourself and your parents. Maybe then, your life will be more worth living? Idk.

          • Necro

            Blah Blah Blah

        • Samuel

CJ Melendez – you still sound like your mouth is stuffed with feces. Go back to watching your parents have sex you sick pervert.

      • Necro

I said I could get behind either one of them, not it HAD to be either one of them! And if you bothered to read my entire comment I said I hope WHOEVER they pick I hope they do a good job.

Oh and by the way OPINIONS VARY! It seems like you like to talk like your opinion is fact or better than everyone else’s. And the saddest part of this is that I actually agree with some of your suggestions.

      • Smooth Moose

Evan Peters has a huge range and has drastically improved as an actor since the first season of AHS. He can do the accent, he’s got the menace, and he has no problems playing psychotic.

  • Jada Maes

    SHARLTO COPELY.

    • Samuel

No. He did a good job letting loose on A Team but it was a tightly controlled letting loose (as paradoxical as that may seem). He’s not the right fit. His South African-ness is evident, it just comes through, because the man, entertaining in small doses, cannot carry a film. District 9 was a mess though I blame the terrible plot more than anything. There are far better choices than Copely. If they’re looking at Riz Ahmed, I’m happy. He has a real sense of menace about him, like he might just really be a serial killer. That’s what you want.

      • James

Copley was excellent in district 9. He can carry a film but I agree he’s not the right choice for carnage.

        • Sanger

I thought he rocked in ‘Open Grave’.

          • James

He did. He hasn’t really disappointed yet.

    • Matt Graupman

Sharlto Copely is one of those actors that, depending on the role, is either amazing (“Free Fire”) or insufferable (“Hardcore Henry”); there’s not a lot of in-between.

      • Jada Maes

See, I really liked him in Hardcore Henry (part if it being him playing so many roles). Mostly I think Agent Kruger with a symbiote.

        • Matt Graupman

That’s cool, but I guess – for me – a little Sharlto Copely goes a long way.

    • Dan Warren (Forgottenretroworl

      Akan is a c***!

That is truly sick! I collect but it’s mainly Horror related figures. That there I would have no problem adding to my collection.

    • Laura Kinney (X-23)

Oh, I’m soooo there!! I want one!!

      • thepowell

        your username is awesome.

        • Laura Kinney (X-23)

          Haha, thank you!! 🙂

  • Jonathan Spiroff

In the video it sounds like he’s talking more about Venom, than flat out mentioning Carnage…

    • David Miller

Exactly. The entire thing is talking about Hardy and Venom, and the word carnage is only used in the context of Hardy being a badass Venom who will kick some ass.

It could be a hint via intention choice of words, but it could also be entirely irrelevant because this says nothing about the character.

  • Cody Pearson

Sucks that the movie is already confirmed to be garbage since Sony is behind it. Thats too bad.

    • madchilli

so believe the first thing you read eh!

    • Bill Agans

      No, it’s not.

    • Evan3

You do realize that Sony made one of the greatest super hero films of all time, right?

      • Cody Pearson

Lol funny joke man. Phew, almost had me going. Sony is garbage.

        • Evan3

You should check out Spider-man 2 (and 1…. and Homecoming).

          • Cody Pearson

…I have seen all of them. Absolute garbage movies, Homecoming is made by Marvel btw, and that happens to be the only good one.

          • Nick Botic

While you might consider SM-2 to be garbage, the general consensus is that it’s one of the best superhero films ever made. So despite their recent shortcomings, they have had success in the superhero arena. That just can’t be factually denied, lol

  • Daniel Sadler

    Zack Ward

  • Nahuel Benvenuto

i thought it was gonna be a comedy?

    • Grimphantom

Welp, Sony is pretty much a comedy since they fail miserably when it comes to making a Movie universe.

    • Nick Botic

What could have possibly made you think that? Lol, it’s been talked about as a horror-style film for months now.

  • jurgmandr

Riz Ahmed?! is that a fucking joke… Walton Goggins would be an amazing cletus/carnage. Willem Dafoe would also work imo. Also, Ruben Fleischer is a shit director.

    • J Jett

      Riz is an excellent actor.

      • jurgmandr

yeah he’s a fine actor, but would make a terrible cletus kasady/carnage imo.

        • Nick Botic

I agree. Ria Ahmed is a fantastic actor. His role as “Naz” in “The Night Of” was incredible. But he is not a fit for Cletus Kassady. Kassady is an ignorant hillbilly piece of shit psychopath. Ria Ahmed is a British-Pakistani man. He doesn’t embody anything that Kassady is. I’m sure he could nail the personality, but he doesn’t have the physical likeness of him, nowhere near it.

          • Samuel

Can’t help it if you’re a racist. 99% of comic book characters are white. So what? Does that mean cinematic universes of the same have to be just as prejudiced? Sorry but your bigotry won’t be supported. WE’LL CHANGE THOSE CHARACTERS TO MINORITIES BECAUSE NEARLY HALF OF AMERICA IS NOT WHITE. Deal with it feces-face.

          • Nick Botic

Wow you are just….the worst kind of idiot. I’m not white hahah. You’re just stupid. But it’s okay buddy. You’ll be just fine.

          • Necro

You’re NOT kidding there Nick! Did the same shit to me as well!

          • Nick Botic

I previously said he must have a shitty life, but I was wrong. He must have an awesome life if he has the time to be that huge of a dickhead online for no reason. And I mean, he’s obviously a troll. If someone legitimately thought I was a gung-ho racist piece of shit, I might take offense, but this guy’s not even good at it. Haha

          • Necro

I know the other day when I got the first response it honestly took me 10 minutes to remember the thread until I finally looked it up. And f**k a month later, no wonder I couldn’t remember! I mean obviously there’s no timetable to reply but shit it bothered him that much! Then I scanned down through and saw it just wasn’t me, it was like 6 other people, and I couldn’t help but think damn is it really that important to lash back at people over an opinion. And no one said anything out of line to him either. And he had the nerve to say I was calling him names, holy f**k dude go back and read your replies! Trying to talk like he’s right and everyone else is wrong! F**k outta here with that bulls**t! Yeah I’m glad you said no reason cuz that is exactly what it is! All this over who would make a good ‘Carnage’, I’d really hate to see a conversation about something important holy hell!

          • Nick Botic

Lol seriously, bring up some relevant topics and ol’ Sammy boy up there will probably have a heart attack. I don’t think I was racist at all when I said that the heart of the character (Cletus Kassady) is that he is a redneck piece of shit. That’s who Kassady is. I even said that I support changing certain characters to those of other races in an effort to diversify and appeal to other cultures, there’s nothing wrong with that. But when a part of a character’s personality is directly tied to his/her heritage and upbringing, I think it should be left alone. MJ in Homecoming, for example. It didn’t make much of a difference that she was played by a woman of color, and I thought the actress did a fine job and gave a good interpretation of the character. But a British Pakistani guy playing a backwoods hillbilly psychopath? Just doesn’t seem right. But I guess I should just take my inbred dick and go jerk off to my parents or whatever that dipshit said haha

          • Necro

Yep valid points and more importantly your opinion as well! I don’t think he understands what that means. Oh Haha! He brought up your parents to huh? Yep mine for whatever mysterious reason got drug into the verbal bashing as well. Trying to explain it’s ok if you disagree, but when he tells you that your opinion is wrong simply cuz he thinks so is downright narcissistic. He vehemently denied it but that’s a textbook narcissist: “A person who thinks the world revolves around them” is pretty much the definition and go look at his replies and tell me I’m wrong. With his deranged mind maybe he could go and play ‘Carnage’!

          • Samuel

Finally we agree on something. I am indeed a brilliant thespian. I would make a brilliant Carnage. I’m glad you pointed that out and it’s good to know that you masturbate over my acting abilities.

          • Nick Botic

That’s gotta be what it is, he’s campaigning to play Kassady!

          • Necro

It’s the only thing that makes sense! In a reply to me he called himself “a brilliant thespian” Any questions?

          • Nick Botic

Like what of anything I said was even remotely racist? And if I’m racist, I’m doing really bad at it. You missed the entire point of what I said, because once again, you’re (apparently) just really, really dumb. You are my joke of the day, because I am laughing at you.

Also I like how you say “we” like you have any influence at all over anything regarding these things. Hahaha. Thank you again for the laugh, and I probably speak for anyone who’s ever met you when I say please don’t change, the world needs hilarity.

          • Samuel

It must really bother you that Black Panther is being made, huh? Nothing you can do about it loser. NOTHING. Go back to jerking off thinking of your parents you in-bred trash.

          • Nick Botic

Hahahaha, I already preordered my night-before-opening-day tickets to Black Panther because I’m a huge A. Marvel fan, B. Black Panther comic fan, C. Michael B. Jordan fan, and D. Ryan Coogler fan.

And I get jerked off by my girlfriend generally, so, there’s that.

You’re the worst kind of troll lol, you’re not even good at it. Nice try though. Haha. You suck, and must have a shitty life. I feel bad for you.
