Take The Expanded Ultimate Horror Challenge!!! How Do You Rank Now?

We have heard your cries! MANY of you felt that the The Ultimate Horror Challenge wasn’t comprehensive enough! So we included an additional 20 films that round it out a bit more. Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). READ MORE

Bloody Disgusting’s List of ‘Horror Unmakes’!

One of the most infamous remakes of all time is Gus Van Sant’s pointless shot-by-shot interpretation of Psycho, which was released to a horde of “why did they bother?” admonishments and an almost complete lack of interest from the general public. Putting aside the relative merits of the film’s technical aspects, the update is generally regarded as a badly failed experiment and, perhaps even worse, an empty exercise on the part of a filmmaker too wrapped up in his own indulgences. Sundance ’11 Interview: Festival Darling/’King of Weird’ Robert Longstreet

Mainstream filmgoers may not be familiar with actor Robert Longstreet, but hopefully for him that will change after this year’s Sundance, where he’s appearing in four different movies screening in the festival’s Park City at Midnight section: Michael Tully’s Septien, Todd Rohal’s Catechism Cataclysm, Calvin Reeder’s The Oregonian, and Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter. Needless to say, he and B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen had a lot to talk about when they hopped on the phone to discuss these myriad projects, and you can check out the full interview inside (helpfully broken up into sections for those only interested in certain films). Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Begins to Populate

I seriously feel like time has passed Kevin Smith by. Back in the day I was a HUGE fan, but as of late I’ve found myself disheartened not only by Smith’s online personality (bitching, moaning, making excuses — although, who the hell am I to talk?), but also by his films (especially Cop Out). It doesn’t mean I’m not rooting for him. Sh*t, who doesn’t want to see a good horror film? Later this month Smith gears up for his first try in our genre as he’s casting up his political horror Red State. According to The Wrap, Kyle Gallner (The Haunting in Connecticut, A Nightmare on Elm Street), Melissa Leo (“Treme”), Dermot Mulroney (The Messengers), Michael Angarano and Steven Root (“True Blood”) could be joining the previously announced character actor Michael Parks. Red State follows a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. (more…) READ MORE

Anchor Bay Gains ‘Altitude’ for U.S. and U.K.

Easily near the top of my list of “most anticipated” upcoming horror films is Kaare Andrews’ Altitude, an H.P. Lovecraftian thriller that takes to the sky with hotties Jessica Lowndes (Autopsy, The Haunting of Molly Hartley) and Julianna Guill (Friday the 13th, My Super Psycho Sweet 16 and the forthcoming The Apparition). It was announced today that Anchor Bay has landed U.S. and U.K. rights, so takeoff shouldn’t be delayed too much longer. Read on for the skinny. (more…) READ MORE

Update: ‘The Haunting in Georgia’ Shooting This Summer… Without Ti West

The Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that film producer Buffalo Gal Pictures has teamed with Gold Circle Films on The Haunting in Georgia, the companion piece to Lionsgate’s The Haunting in Connecticut. Shooting is scheduled to begin this summer, with the site failing to mention Ti West’s (House of the Devil, The Roost) involvement. We’ve heard confirmed that he is NOT attached anymore as he’s working on The Innkeepers for Dark Sky Films and Glass Eye Pix. In the flick that’s based on the true story: Once moved into their modest home situated on what was once an Old South plantation, a young couple grows concerned when their daughter begins encountering mysterious strangers that no one else can see. Their fear is heightened when they themselves become witness to terrifying phenomena in and around the house, giving clues to unlock a chilling mystery that has remained a closely-guarded secret for generations. Full Details on ‘The New Daughter’ DVD/Blu-ray

For single father John James (Kevin Costner), raising his teenage daughter Louisa (Ivana Baquero) and younger son Sam (Gattlin Griffith) would be difficult enough, considering he recently uprooted his family to start a new life in a new town. But he’ll soon find his parenting – and survival – skills put to the test when Louisa begins exhibiting increasingly strange behavior. Best & Worst of 2009: The Year’s Best One Sheets

Before any footage from a film is seen, typically a teaser or full one sheet is released by a studio. This is an incredibly important, even detrimental process as it is the first thing the consumers will see and identify with a movie. If the poster stinks, the consumer might write it off all together, while a good poster could lead to them checking out the official website, trailer and best case scenario, hanging it from their wall (the most personal relationship any of us have with a movie). To say the least, posters are damn important. As part of our year end coverage, we present to you the year’s best theatrical posters. (more…) READ MORE

00′s Retrospect: Dead on Arrival — Ten Horror Duds of the Last Decade

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this has been a great decade for horror films. Anyone who doesn’t think so simply hasn’t been paying attention. Of course, those successes likely wouldn’t have felt as sweet had there not been about four or five times as many bad ones, and following from that observation I’ve sifted through the cinematic garbage bin to put together this list of the worst. We’re not talking direct-to-DVD bargain-bin burners here; we normally expect those to be bad. We’re talking studio-released, mostly moderate-to-big-budget disasters with a lot of marketing and moolah behind them. These aren’t the hand grenades; these are the atom bombs whose explosions of craptastic-ness were too big to ignore. They’re listed in order of release rather than badness, since there’s just no way to rank these suckers in any meaningful order. They’re all terrible in their own unique and special way.
