I haven’t left the movie theater so happy and satisfied in a very long time. DRAG ME TO HELL is one of the most entertaining horror films I’ve ever seen. This is a great comeback for Sam Raimi to the horror genre!
I loved it. I’m going to see it again tomorrow. I’m probably going to see it a few more times. I’m pretty sure the reason this got a PG-13 and not an R was because there was hardly any swear words. There was plenty of gore though. And Sam knows how to use the camera and angles to get that creepy atmosphere. It’s a pretty loud movie. The sound effects are almost deafening, but it all adds to the intensity. Christopher Young is a GOD. His score fit the movie perfectly. There is nothing to not like about this movie. Everything about it is wonderful. I really had one of the best theatrical experiences I’ve had during this movie, and that doesn’t happen too often. Sam, welcome back. You’ve been sorely missed.
Sam Raimi is a horror god and the fact that he insists on working outside of this medium of film mostly makes me sad. The truth that he could have been making more movies like this his whole career instead of “For Love of the Game” has me shedding a tear every now and then but I digress. On to the film. This movie was everything I hoped it would be and more. I don’t want to give too much away but I must say I was hooked from the beginning and I was completely sold until the final reel. Sam Raimi has crafted a new modern masterpiece of horror in vein with his Evil Dead trilogy. The horror and comedy elements are an effective as ever cocktail. The movie stretches it’s PG-13 rating to the limit as the fluids and gross-outs come with a fun and often hilarious regularity. The acting in the film is top notch and sports just the right level of cheesy goodness that you know the effort was put in to make you feel a sense of nice 80′s horror nostalgia. This guy knows how to make you jump and jump you will. Even the most jaded horror fan has to appreciate a brick wielding gypsy who appears out of nowhere and proceeds to smash it into a car window. I won’t delve any further into some of the better freak outs as this a movie that simply must be experienced. I recommend you see it now.
the movie was really great. I love Sam raimi’s horror films and it’s really a major step in the right direction for him and his best film since the second Evil dead film. the gags were relaly great in the film. and it kept the very hard balance of being truly scary and ridiculously funny at the same time. if I had one complaint there was a bit of an over reliance on the CGI and I wish they used more prosthetics and actual goo. besides that the movie majorly rocked now where’s my Evil dead 4?
I LOVED IT!! this was honestly the first PG-13 horror film that i’ve loved. it had everything, comedic bits, some seriously GROSS scenes, and I do mean gross, and some really jumpy/creeps scenes that made the entire audience burst. i definitely wanna see it again, it was totally great and worth it!
Sam Raimi’s Olympian return to horror gushes with the zeitgeist of his previous, now nearing encrusted, however, still significant “Evil Dead” trilogy. A series that during the time of the maturation of my psyche, had inflamed the nerves of my intimate organ… Presently, they couldn’t provoke the slightest quiver of scrotal activity. Did “Drag Me To Hell” elicit even a glint of evidential interest?
The movie theater was a stagnant and dimly lit place. There I witnessed under aged girls wearing fishnet shirts with no bras whatsoever… Propositioning sordid, sleazy looking men, accepting handfuls of money and grabbing hold of their “dates” arms. I followed this audacious repugnant act into theater 12 where the film was screening. I made my wife, who was beside me, aware of the crime that was taking place, having to stifle her shout of outrage with my hand. We proceeded to an appropriate seating area.
Bullshit trailers ran their usual unrefined course. Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” splashed across the screen with an impotent thud, as Brad Pitt exercised his moronic act with usual vigor. And Eli Roth couldn’t look happier to have Tarantino’s vehemently throbbing pikestaff coast deeper somewhere in the profundity of his intestines. The rest were unmentionable… Except “Orphan”. My only hope is that everyone who sees that film suffers memorably fierce crotch rot.
Then when film began, what occurred was a garishly polished, yet vibrant opening scene. Mr. Raimi sets a precedence immediately, the results yielding a tremendous, almost sadistic satisfaction. The rest of the film displays the sum of Raimi’s accumulated experience as a filmmaker, and talent. Not even the seemingly barely lucid Alison Lohman could detract from the gaudy ghoulishness. A few glimmers of tolerable humor made this masculine looking actress’ performance above average. Justin Long sadly suffers once again at the hands of his stubborn yet constant portrayal of the dickless and soft male character that he seems determined to polish over the duration of his career. Adding an apparent sheen of credibility to the cast is the seasoned and soulful Adriana Barraza of “Babel”. Her tongues gives an unforgettable, enticing appearance. If Barraza was the heart of this film, then the Old Bitch is the love muscle. She is ferociously persistent and firm in her misguided beliefs.
Sitting through this film reminded me that being entertaining is something that horror films ought to try and accomplish more often. I gauge my enjoyment on the scale of discomfort that my erect phallus inflicts depending on the firmness. And this film nearly erupted several testicular arteries. I would give Sam Raimi a blow job if I were a woman… That’s saying something profound on my behalf.
OGBF
I can’t believe people are not talking about this. I just got back from rehearsing it at work! What can I say except AWESOME! Sam Raimi returns to the horror genre with a BANG! this is by far his best film since Evil Dead 2. He has hit a perfect balance between scares and laughs, just like he did with ED 2. This film feels very much like a cousin of the ED trilogy. I haven’t been so tense watching a film in a long time, there are some seriously scary moments in this film, then some genuinely funny ones, in true Raimi fashion. It’s brilliantly shot, paced and acted! I for one will never piss off a gypsy, you can count on that! I’ll be honest and say I did expect it to be a bit more “insane” from all the over the top reviews I’d read, but I don’t know if my heart would have lasted the full 99 minutes if it had been. Poor Alison Lohman’s character, she really doesn’t deserve the horror she endures in this film, she really is a sweet, kind woman. Which makes it all the more insane when she starts to suffer at the hand of the evil Lahmia (spelling????) that comes for her soul! I did see the “twist” coming a mile off though, and everyone goes on about the “stella” ending, I found it a bit weak considering, but I guess it was only meant to be a “1 last scare” thing, when I wanted mayhem! LOL. Either way, I cannot wait to see it again, without expectations, as I believe I will truly fall in love with this film when I do! Raimi is the man once more, and shows Hollywood just how to make a fun horror movie! Make sure you all head out and watch this, take friends, it will be a great ride in a full screen with your mates!
****1/2 out of *****
This movie is beyond fantastic. At first I wasn’t too excited about it, not because it is a PG-13 movie, but after viewing the trailer and reading all the great reviews, I wasn’t convinced. It’s just hard trusting reviewers and trailers these days. Main reason, the old lady. She didn’t seem scary and didn’t like her look. But after viewing the trailer a few times, it actually grew on me, with the help of the main actress of course. I love her. And to my surprise, the old lady turned out to be one of my favorite actors in the movie, how ironic. I was completely blown away, from the visuals to especially the sounds, WOW! It had so much Evil Dead elements it was not even funny, even the score was so similar. It should have been called Evil Dead 4. I just simply loved it from beginning to end. It’s such a fun and very scary movie. I will definitely see it again and again. Will be taking my mom to see it, I’m sure she will love it and I’m sure you will too. Now it’s time for Sam Raimi to make more horror movies.
The movie opens in Pasadena, 1969. An immigrant couple beg for help from a woman who is clearly a medium of some sort; their son had a run-in with some Gypsies, and is now hearing voices. “They’re getting louder,” he says, “they’re coming for me.” Carried into the medium’s lavish house, the boy looks up at the skylight and sees clawed hands scrabbling at the glass.
A seance is held. It does not go well. The boy is thrown bodily out of the room and over a banister to the floor below. While his parents rush to save him, the medium woman is the only witness to what happens next. The floor beneath the boy cracks, revealing a fiery red glow beneath. With an animal noise and lightning speed, something shoots up a hand, and the boy is dragged screaming into the floor, which seals itself up without a mark. In huge letters, white on black, the movie’s title pops onto the screen. Boom.
And when it’s this screen, and you’re sitting in the sixth row, and you’re surrounded by people who made the movie, because it’s the first time the movie has screened in a theater, it’s a damn good boom. The audience went nuts.
I’d never been to Grauman’s Chinese Theater before, but it is freakin’ beautiful. They do not skimp on the decor. The ceiling in the main room is dominated by what I took to be a massive sculpted chrysanthemum that must’ve been fifty feet in diameter, ringed by a series of gorgeous concentric friezes.
The hype for Drag Me to Hell leans heavily on “Sam Raimi’s return to horror,” and for once the hype is right. If nothing else, it’s a wonderful day for movies when the director of Spider-Man 3 (or as I like to call it, Spehlbleh-Bleh Bleh) turns out something good again.
And it is good. Set now in the present, Alison Lohman plays a young woman who makes one uncharacteristic, completely legitimate act of self-interest and winds up on the brink of Hell. Just don’t piss off Gypsies, that’s the motto of this one.
Settling into this, I thought “I really like curse movies.” Then I realized what I was really thinking was “I really like The Ring.” I didn’t see Thinner, but I didn’t like the book so much. So curse movies can kind of suck, I guess, but this curse is great. Like The Ring, it’s the threat of something coming, but in the meantime things just get worse and worse.
It starts out bad enough, with a knockdown physical fight with all the Sam Raimi trimmings. Later, when she’s leaving the scene, Christine decides immediately to visit a storefront psychic, a plot move of admirable rapidity. As you may know, I’ve seen a number of horror movies, and as a result I balk at beleagured conversations about the threat really existing. DMTH keeps this to a minimum, mostly delivered by likeable “I’m a Mac” boyfriend Justin Long.
Enter Dileep, who will later inform Christine that she’s been targeted by the Lamia, the Black Goat, who is the most powerful demon in a Gypsy arsenal. “For three days he torments the cursed,” he says, showing a Medieval woodcut of a woman beset by a large shadow.
The image really stuck with me. The contrast between the drained emotions of the centuries-old image and Christine’s actual torment are rich and horrible. Also, the curse is so unfair! I thought Hell was where you went if you were bad, and now I find out pissed off old women can send you there? Bogus!
Solid stuff. Not as all-around good as The Gift, and not the “Exorcist with ninjas” frenzy that is Evil Dead 2, but ample proof that Raimi is back on his game. I have few critiques. There is some humor, but I can only think of one
Best American horror film since Jacob’s Ladder, that was nearly 20 years ago. Great stuff.
Saw the midnight screening last night and i can tell you , this movie was brilliant! i had so much fun watching it! it made me laugh several times but when a scary part comes up it is very intense and scary. i heard somewhere that sam raimi wanted this movie to be like a roller coaster and i believe he has achieved just that! now we just need evil dead 4….haha GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
amazing
There is no doubting the fact that there has been a severe dry spell in theaters when considering horror. With the epic success of Friday the 13th this past February, there really wasn’t too much left in the horizon to look forward to, sans “The Last House on the Left” remake and “Halloween 2″. Well if there is indeed a “horror drought”, then Drag Me to Hell is the rainstorm we have been anticipating…

classic raimi! just fucking AMAZING!
I tried to stay away from all the hype and prepared to be disappointed, but I have never been so wrong. It was badass in everyway. the scares were great the gore wasn’t too over the top but very acceptable. The seance was a great climax scene and the ending was great! haha and i’m sure all us Evil Dead nerds saw Ash’s good ol’ yellow/tan car.
WELCOME BACK SAMMY!!! HOLY SHIT WAS THIS FUN! The most fun I’ve had in a theater in a loooong time! I hope this makes tons of money because it deserves it! It’s a rollercoaster ride and I’m dying to get back on.
I thought it was really good but not as good as people are saying. Ya it was fun and pretty cool, but not amazing. All in all it was a pretty good PG-13 horror movie. The ending was fucking awesome.
Unmitigated trash, straddling the line between horror and comedy and unsure of which side to land on.
it was great! of course if you are not a fan of sam raimi or if you just dont like his work, you may consider the film a little silly. the story is simple, nice woman wants promotion and shames a gypsy in the process, and of course she will have hell to pay. anyways, the cgi wasnt overwhelming, and it was effective. it was sprinkled with humor, but had a fair share of good scares. i jumped at least 3 times. lol. compared to almost every recent horror film, this film is awesome, and compared to some of the great horror classics, it is still a decent film. my opinion is if you go in wanting to have a good, fun film experience then im pretty sure not may people will be dissappointed!
I just watched the film a couple hours ago and it has made my day, and possibly the next few. This movie is pretty much an evil dead movie minus ash. It is a kick ass tribute film for the fans. This movie was made entirely for the fans. I talked more shit about how this movie better not be a sell out flick more than anybody. Well… I’m here to say that it wasn’t, and the pg13 rating didn’t make a damn difference neither (there’s blood and and enough gross out moments to make all happy). Sam Raimi is back in a big fucking way. It’s drenched with dark humor also. I’m actually shocked almost. I wasn’t expecting sam to return so faithfully back to his roots. I’m so happy with this film, AMAZING. Sam is back. EVIL DEAD FANS CAN REJOICE. If this film does well, I bet he’ll do another kick ass horror film, because you can tell he had a lot of fun making this movie. GO WATCH THIS MOVIE YOU WILL HAVE A FUCKING BLAST.
Excellent movie. You must see this in theaters. I loved every moment of this film. Finally a great horror movie for a change. It creeped me out in alot of scenes. I’m going to have nightmares from that old witch with the different colored eyes. Drag Me To Hell is a classic, and I hope it wins an award! Excellent job Sam Raimi!
Drag Me To Hell delivered exactly what it was supposed to deliver, A Horror movie with a bunch of laughs and scenes that were made to gross you out, I can remember a few of them scenes involving bodily fluids and bugs, if those two things don’t make you feel edgy then you are already dead. Alison Lohman not only an cotton candy cutie she played a great role along with Justin Long. A must see for all Evil Dead fans and to all around horror fans this is one not to disappoint.
OK FRIENDS JUST GOT HOME FROM SEEING DRAG MR TO HELL.. LET ME TELL YOU THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST HORROR MOVIE OF THE YEAR I THINK ITS FUNNING
ITS AWESOME HORROR. AND ALL THE ACTORS WAS SO AWESOME. THE END OF THE MOVIE WAS MINE BLOWING!!
I WILL GO AND SEE IT 3 OR 4 MOVE TIME TELL I CAN BUY THE DVD!!!!
After seeing Drag Me to Hell, i exited the theater with a face-ripping smile on my face. Can this movie even be described by words? EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! the creepy Mrs. Ganush, the wonderful Allison Lohman, the scares, the humor, the slick look, EVERYTHING. GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW! amazing amazing. this without a doubt ranks among my favorite horror movies Scream and The Ring. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.
As a Raimi and Evil Dead fan… I absolutely adored this film.
Just go see it.
It was absolutely hilarious… and plenty creepy in parts as well.
Some of the CGI was a little iffy… but it went with the overall B movie feel.
GANUSH WAS EXCELLENT.
Just go see it. Now.
The best horror movie in years, is the only way to describe this movie. I mean i felt like i was watching a new Evil Dead, Dead Alive, Bad Taste sort of movie…. just whatever years later and with an actual budget. It was excellent. The first movie to bring the amazing crappy B Horror comedy into the mainstream…. except maybe Shaun of the Dead. It was not quite as good as any of these movies, but the fact that I am even mentioning it in the same breath with these films is amazing. It was also the first time in awhile, (excluding the dark knight) that i finished watching a movie and wanted to walk right back into the theater to see it again. It is amazing… drop what you are doing and go see it now, especially if you like any of the movies i have mentioned. five out of five, ten out of ten, however you want to say it, it gets the highest of all ratings.
This was one of the movies I was really looking foward to this year. All I can say is it is everything everyone is writing about it. It was FANTASTIC! There are obvious spots in the movie that will remind you of the Evil Dead films, the comedy was spot on as well. The FX were great, with one exception IMO. The cg with the eyeball scene in the mouth was pretty bad. I though it would have been done better with old school FX, but that is my only complaint with this film. This is a movie I would be proud to have in my collection and one in witch I would watch over and over for years to come. I was laughing the entire time (silently of course) at alot of the obvious gags. Such as the animal sacrifice part. Sorry kitty, but loved the kitty poster on the wall right before the deed was done. You knew it was comming. Priceless. I could go on and on about this film, but seriously, just go see it! Even if your cheap or low on cash go to the matinee for the discount. Just see this movie, it does not disappoint. The vision of the old womans toothless drooling mouth trying to bite alison Lohmans face will forever be burnt into my mind, and I will never look at a candy dish on someones desk the same way. I give this movie 10 skulls!!!!!
Lately, it’s becoming more and more regular that I pay to watch a horror film and come out feeling let down because they just keep churning out the same old stuff that is unscary and pointless. This is definitely NOT the case with Drag me to Hell which I thought was a breath of fresh air. There were scary parts, gross parts and really funny parts in this film which you just kept being hit with throughout and you could tell that a lot of effort has gone into making this film good rather than something which is put together quickly to make money. It’s the first time I’ve heard an audience groan, laugh and scream in equal measures which proves how effective the film is.
I thought all the characters were good, especially Christine who came across as a cute, all american girl who was willing to do anything to get out of the mess she was in. She made me laugh. And then there’s Mrs Ganush who was completely mental and relentless. I wouldn’t like to annoy her (unless I’ve got an anvil handy!).
The story was quite basic but this doesn’t really let the film down because it just means that you don’t have to think and you can just concentrate on having a great time!
Hopefully, horror directors will take note of this film and start making more like it.
I saw this at the Orlando screening and OMG!! It was so awesome. I’ve forgotten how much fun a true horror classic is. Drag Me To Hell is one the best horror films that I’ve watched in a very long time. It was funny, scary and so original. Thank you Mr. Raimi for taking us on one hell of a roller coaster ride. Please give us more Mr. Raimi. Btw, I wish Justin Long had a little bit more fun in the movie.
I saw this with the lady last night. We wanted to see Pontypool, but no luck in getting that one in a theater near us, so we decided to watch “Drag Me To Hell”. The lady wasn’t sold on it because she said the previews looked like the movie was just going to be one of those stupid horror movies that we usually get now days. As for me, I was already sold on the movie by reading all the reviews on this site. I couldn’t pass this one up. So we checked it out and we were sold within the first 10 minutes of the film. The opening credits was sort of like a 70′s-80′s horror tribute. It was really great! From start to finish..this movie was incredible. It was scary, funny, cheesy, and gross = a good horror movie. I can’t even begin to start how much I loved this film. As soon as the credits started rolling down at the end.. the lady told me “We’re getting this on DVD”.
If you’re a big fan of 80′s horror, then there’s no way you can pass up on a movie like this. I loved it! The ending was more than what I can ask for. It was great.
This is one of the best horror films of 2009. I’ll go as far as to put this on my top 100 greatest horror movies of all time and there shouldn’t be a reason why this movie won’t be on yours as well.
Me and a buddy saw it tonight. He didn’t think much of it. As for me, the movie was a little more over the top then I expected. It was gross, if that’s the right word for it. What scared me was mostly the loud sounds that would accompany whatever was happening in the film. There were a few parts that I would be like “Seriously? Really? Did that just happen?” One example is when Alison Lohman gets a nosebleed in the office and it sprays like a garden hose on her boss. The movie was OK for the most part all-in-all. Just way too hyped up.
I saw this movie along with my uncle who enjoys horror films a lot. I knew I was in for a huge treat once the old 1980′s Universal logo appeared on the screen. The movie started off extremely strong and immediately got the audience’s attention. From there on the movie was one big amazing and disgusting yet hilarious thrill ride. The scares were pretty good my only complaint is that it was mainly just turning up the sound but, Raimi did that in previous film such as The Evil Dead so I can’t really complain. But, besides that the movie was awesome good old fashioned Raimi horror. I can’t praise this movie enough, it was just to me horror movie bliss. I highly recommend this to any horror fan ( Evil Dead fans especially) but also to people who love to have fun at the movies and like to be scared. This is by far one of my favorite films of all time! It’s that good.
I’m not in the mood to make a long review so…Just go see this movie! It was pure fun with a ballsy ending. I loved this movie.
Went to the sneak peak screening Tuesday at the Universal Cineplex in Orlando. I thought it was great. Raimi could’ve easily made this into a bloodbath movie. But he made a badass movie with little or no blood whatsoever. I think that’s harder. Kinda like a comic being funny without cursing. It can be done, but not everyone can do it. Awesome.
I just got back from seeing it and all i can say was WOW. The movie is excellent. Ganush is one scary bitch (and funny). Alison did an amazing job to! And for sure I’m gonna see it again.
Finnally a movie worth seeing this year! I read all the reviews i could find before i saw the movie and they were all positive. It was like these reviews were too good to be true, but they were right. I read that someone said why does it always have to be a woman in these situations? If you want something done right, ask a woman! The movie had me jumping, plenty of bodily fluds, and the acting was good as well. The lead character was not a wimpering or pathetic excuse for a woman. She kicked ass when she needed too. The movie grabbed me from start to finish. I liked the ending, i’m glad sam rami did not go for the sweet happy thereafter ending. It ended like i should have. I love it when in a movie the other character, her boyfriend, don’t beleive what is going on and they think you are crazy. Of course they always find out the hard way in the end when it’s too late. Drag Me To Hell is a movie worth your time. I know i’m glad i took a chance and gave the movie a try, it was worth it.
One word, WOW!! Usually when a movie is hyped by fanboys as much as this one has been its usually a let down when I go see it because it never lives up to the hype to me. This one was the exception! Drag Me To Hell lives up to all the positive buzz you have been hearing. Sam Raimi comes back to horror with a vengeance! Even though the movie was PG-13 it still managed to make this jaded horror hound jump in a few different scenes! If you are a fan of the Evil Dead movies you will definitely love DMTH, and you will catch the references to the ED movies that are made. I was the only person that laughed at the toolshed scene, no one else got it! I HIGHLY recommend this movie to everyone. My only complaint is it wasn’t Evil Dead 4, maybe the horror gods will grant us that wish someday!
brilliant.. funny as hell and intense at times.. Raimi is the perfect guy for making these types of films. nothing was better then that dancing demon guy.. the ending couldnt of been any better.. completely satisfying.. i will be seeing this again in theatres and i can’t say that often.. this will be in my top 10 of the year for sure

Amazing movie! The gore was so crazy and the whole movie was a lot of fun. The ending was really gutsy and made the movie stand out even more. The acting was great and they really made us care about the characters. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie!
*****WARNING SPOILERS BELOW*****
I just saw Drag Me To Hell, and I have to say that it was a great horror movie for not having any gore. This movie proves that you don’t need blood and gore to make a successful horror film. Almost all of the jump scares startled me and left me feeling tense. However, there are several pet peeves I have about this film that are overly silly and irritating.
Christine LITERALLY, could not keep her mouth closed the entire movie! How many times did the old gypsy vomit into Christine mouth? Even when the old gypsy is dead her body happens to fall on Christine and embalming fluid goes straight into Christine’s mouth. How can a dead person grip so tightly that she could pull a hank of hair out of someones head?
I was disappointed at the end of this film.
The storyline leads you to believe that Christine will be “taken” in 3 days, but she survives the night she is supposed to be “taken” and is “taken” the following day. This movie is worth paying for; you will be scared and laughing the entire movie.
Really rad movie Its refreshing to see him revisiting the Evil Dead roots.
Too many people are saying this movie’s great simply cause it’s Raimi’s return to horror. Though, in my opinion, it almost feels like a hackneyed version of Evil Dead.
Just like the Evil Dead trilogy, you constantly have really loud creepy noises and kooky camera angles to help induce the character’s rapidly decaying sanity, BUT Allison Lohman never quite feels like she’s losing it (a la Bruce Campbell). It’s almost as if the casting director simply settled for her because they couldn’t find someone who could truly freak the fuck out.
The movie also reeks of CGI, and none of it decent looking (cept maybe the flies I guess). Like Evil Dead, there’s lots of over the top gory situations but all of it’s done with CGI and just looks too fake and obnoxious; the anvil scene in the shed is a prime example. Raimi 20 years ago would’ve relied on creature feature effects to instill a goofy sense of gore, but post Spider-man/money grubbing Raimi takes the easy way out.
To top it off, the twist could be seen by anybody about fifteen minutes before it even happens and, as HudsonHawk already pointed out, throws off the rules of the Llamia curse. That reminds me, the means of breaking the curse were just to simple and convenient; why not just do it from the beginning?
All qualms aside, I still enjoyed the movie. I would just never rank it up there with the Evil Dead trilogy. Saw Up the day before. Found it to be a much better film.
I am going to be honest here. I have seen everything that was in this movie before: A demon, A demon giving a curse, A visit to a psychic, A seyance to rid themselves of the demon, etc. The ending was also very predictable. The sad part was that this was a horror movie that wasn’t bad, but it did not keep me 100 percent into it and I did get bored every now and again. The ending was still cool to watch though even though the movie seemed as if it was stretched out. To be honest, I believe that around 25 minutes could be shaved off it, but it would be considered a short film if that was to happen. Overall, I think this movie deserves a 7/10.
I was so afraid this film would not live up to its hype. Sam Raimi is back to horror and his signature is all over this film. I find it silly to call a film with Raimi’s style brilliant, but there is no other word for this or his film Evil Dead II. After experiencing “Drag Me to Hell” I was actually shocked at the lack of negative reviews. The reason being this film is very Raimi. I did not put enough faith in the newer audiences liking the bizarre style, especially after I read the synopsis and found the story to be a bit cliche. I am still a cynic and feel there is going to be a back lash for the hype by some of those who love disagreeing for no other reason. Ultimately the Rotten Apples rating will go down, as well as the IMDB ratings. Just look at last year’s Dark Knight. Those who like to be on the other side of something have not had their voice heard yet, but believe me they will. Onto the film…
The opening sequence is a grabber and I knew as soon as the title came up after the opening it was going to be a hell of a ride. The story as previously stated was a bit cliche the most obvious well known film to use a similar story is “Thinner”, though there are plenty of better films than that which follow the idea of a gypsy curse. What I found extraordinarily comfortable is something Raimi does well with. This was the proper use of an “unlikable” hero. Simply put the main character played by Alison Lohman is selfish, vain, and a coward. Remind you of anyone? If you guessed Bruce Campbell’s Ash from the Evil Dead movies you are correct. There were many parts of this film where I actually wanted the girl to be drug into hell. Not because of anything negative. She was just a hard person to cheer for, which was exactly the point of the writers Ivan and Sam.
I thoroughly enjoyed the dark humor in the film and ever Evil Dead tribute was not only executed properly it was inviting, and felt like a cozy worn couch at home for an old horror buff like me. There is a scene with an anvil that just screams “Evil Dead II” and yet another with a scarf being pulled from Lohman’s mouth also echoing the ED trilogy. The acting wasn’t necessary something to brag about, though Lohman played the lead with near flawless execution. I did find some of the smaller part players (those with one or two scenes) to be quite unremarkable and notably so. Actually this was my only negative observation.
The execution of horror in “Drag Me to Hell” was brilliant and in that sense this is Raimi’s best effort. The use of CGI was never noticeably annoying and the use of make-up was unique and wonderful. The gore hounds won’t be floored with the amount gore, but should love the respectfully moderate use.
Overall “Drag Me to Hell” accomplishes a lot. It is one of the most entertaining horror films to come along in years, making it the perfect theatre experience for fans of the genre. It re-establishes Sam Raimi as an icon of horror. It brings a bit of flare back into a dying genre. It will hopefully influence some American film makers to do more throw back efforts rather than continuing to attempt Asian horror. More than that Raimi’s latest should satisfy almost every horror snob on the planet. It has all the ingredients; fun, great visuals, some jump moments, in parts its chilling, it’s hip, gorey enough but not too much so, well written and delivered dark humor, an anti-hero, and finally one hell of a satisfying ending. Five skulls, and welcome back to horror Mr. Raimi.
Well Raimi was done it again and way over due! This is the horror treat I’ve been waiting for especially with all the horror trash since Hostel making torture porn and everything just going over the top!It was absolutely brilliant especially if your an 80′s child I! It brought back all the good scary, campy, and goofiness of them film ESPECIALLY THE EVIL DEAD TRILOGY! This should have been called EVIL DEAD 4!
Also the stars! Alison Lohman was incredible.I can’t imagine anyone playing christine brown better. She was very real. And holy shit Ms. Ganush’s Lorna Raver is in my opinion the new great villian like freddy, jason, and michael! My only complaint was the ending….yes kinda shocking but I was really voting for christine.Damn she been through enough! But Raimi u r brilliant! bring on part 2!
Loved it!
Amazing!
Scary, hilarious, Sam Raimi!
The ONLY reason I won
i have not seen it yet but i cant wait to
Wonderful. So much fun. Had to literally “Drag Wifey” to see it and she walked out GUSHING. One thing so refreshing–main beasty is kept to the shadows and never full-on scene…holy crap, a 2009 horror movie with a monster only “implied” at…lovely. Welcome back, Sam. Skip Spidey 4 and do more like these. It was FUN. Thank you for bringing back FUN to horror.
Great movie.
This movie was as close to the Evil Dead series as a movie could be, made in 2009.
Absolutely awesome, see it with a bunch of friends, I was screaming with delight at all the absurdity. Plus its a pretty jumpy movie that will get you at least once (I hardly ever get surprised by horror movies but this had so many jump scenes).
You’ll love, its an instant classic.
Well done Sam.
What a wild ride! I am amazed at how well the horror and comedy elements blended together. It has great atmosphere and music and will have you on edge one moment, and then laughing your ass off the next. I loved its old-fashioned sensibility. I’d say it’s one-of-a-kind, but Raimi’s own “Evil Dead” trilogy was obviously a huge influence on this. They are very, very similar in tone. But compared to today’s horror, this is something fresh. It saddens me that we don’t see more like this. It’s a masterful blending of genres.
Alison Lohman, who gave such promising performances in movies such as White Oleander and Matchstick Men, makes a welcome comeback with her game performance here. I’m hoping she’ll get more work now.
“Drag Me To Hell” is really something. I cannot imagine any of the big budget blockbusters coming out this summer being nearly this much fun. This is a must for horror fans and should be experienced on the big screen with an audience.
Grade: 9/10 (A)
Unfortunately I’m not sure how word-of-mouth will be on this one. While reviews are beyond fantastic I only heard negative comments on the way out. Granted, it was just a couple of remarks saying it was stupid, but I can see general audiences feeling this way about it. I really don’t think they get the whole tongue-in-cheek approach. I mean, people were laughing a lot during the movie, but sadly I believe a lot of them are going to go away thinking it was cheesy and not intentional. After the movie my boss’s daughter was like, “That was stupid, but it was really funny.” I told her then that it was supposed to be funny, and she was like, “It was? I didn’t know it was supposed to be funny.” And this is why horror-comedies tend to not do too well at the Box Office. Too many people just don’t get them.
This movie was awesome. I screamed and then laughed at the same time. Its sweet how the humor and horror mixed so well. 1 of my Favorite movies now. Masterful film making. Its a great time at the movies.
awesome movie, its the first one to scare me in awhile.it was also funny. the part where that mexican lady was sinnging. but the movie also made me puke a little in my mouth
I saw this film on Saturday night with my girlfriend, and was expecting it to be pretty good, based on the ad campaigns that were forced on the public. I did think that it would turn out like every other horror movie for me. I’d just be wow, that’s a good movie, and a fun movie, with no fright factor.
I’m going to be honest and say this is the first movie out of the many horror movies that freaked me out beyond belief. I’ve seen A Nightmare on Elm Street series, Saw series, both Hostels, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play, Hellraiser 1 and 2, Puppetmaster, The Exorcist, Sixth Sense, Martyrs, Last House on the Left(Original), Shocker, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, IT, Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 1 and 2, the list goes on and on. The thing is that all these movies above were rated R. What really amazes me is how bad the recent list of remakes and horror movies were.
Sam Raimi has finally found out how to make a scary, and fun movie fit the PG-13 rating. I’ll be honest, I hated Spiderman 3, but I think this shows us how one person can come back to the genre with a real vengeance. I was even screaming because of the musical score combined with the in your face techniques he uses in this film.
Now I’m going to actually review this movie and explain why you should definitely see this and also why you shouldn’t eat anything while watching it.
The beginning of the film, including the score, and the freaky music shot me into the film, and made me actually get a little freaked out. The first scene which you need to understand the film, was in your face, and happened so quickly that you can’t prepare for it.
After some minor introductions to the characters and a little back story about Christine. Sam Raimi does what he does best, and provides an intense and in your face horror film, that delivers non-stop scenes where you will jump, and scream. Also the sounds and score add to the intensity, plus when you think its safe and nothing is going to pop up, something big and scary happens. This film has it all, it has the sound, the suspense, and the characters to make a great horror movie.
Even though the movie is scary, and has its humorous parts, including some funny one-liners. It also captures the essences of movies like Constantine, and The Exorcist by showing us several really disgusting scenes, involving massive amounts of blood, maggots, flies and gore in a few scenes. It lives up to its name Drag Me to Hell. The part that I’m going to warn you about is the ending is horrible.
This is what will make the movie suffer in the theaters in terms of money. The ending is a cliffhanger, and just happens and then the title comes on and credits role. Its a crazy and somewhat predictable ending, but I was surprised how it ended. The negative of this movie, is the ending, and some of the dialogue. Other than that, I loved this film, and think this is a real horror movie for any person who wants something intense and appropriate for them.
In terms of other horror movies this year, the only ones that I have considered decent that came out from 2008-2009 are:
Drag Me to Hell
My Bloody Valentine
Quarantine
Those are the only 3 worth watching out of the bunch. I recommend you stay away from the following films both on DVD, and in theaters:
The Unborn(worst movie ever)
Friday the 13th(Michael Bay’s abomination)
Haunting in Connecticut(I haven’t seen this but have heard mixed things)
So if you’re looking for something to see on the weekend, why not avoid Terminator, Night at the Museum, etc.. and see a true master’s triumphant return to the horror genre.
Wow. Just wow. I haven’t been this entertained at the theaters in a long long time. Just got home from seeing this and yeah, its everything any Raimi fan could possibly hope for… and surprisingly NOT having the gore DID NOT MATTER in the least.
The way the humor seamlessly mixed with the horror was brilliant… very reminiscent at times of the Evil Dead movies (especially the seance scene) which only made it better. Raimi is a master of doing all the regular “done a thousand times” horror affects, and friggin’ perfecting them. Even something so simple as a creaky attic or banging doors… masterfully done. And the movie is absolutely PACKED with “make you jump” scenes that actually WORK!!! I lept off my chair on more then one occasion and I cant remember the last time that actually happened in a movie.
EXCELLENT, GO SEE NOW.
One of the best horror movies I’ve seen all year. Went with a few other people and they thought it was completely terrible and over the top, but they’ve never seen the Evil Dead movies or had any idea who Sam Raimi is.
Great movie all around.
This movie was pretty damn good!. Sucker hilarious, it was just all around very entertaining! Nicely done!
I know I’ve been bashin rami for being a sell out for directing those shit tastic spiderman films. But after sitting through this movie I must say I will forget all those spiderman films you’ve done and all the other shit you did pior this is on que with evil dead and even the gift. Welcome back mr. rami stick to makin and directing films under your ghost house instrad of producing all the awful shit you did. And you will remain in the higher ranks with carpenter, craven, thanks for a fun time at the movies.
The directing was very well, so was the acting, the lady who played ganush was funny and scary, and ulgy as fuck. There wasn’t much gore at all, only a tad, but there was enough to carry the movie along. And I never laughed so hard in my life, this was by far the funniest scarriest movie I’ve seen. Was really all that scary. I only jumped like 3 times.
And the ending…. WOW….WOW…WOW… makes the whole movie fuckin amazing.
peace. Now get to work on evil dead 4 motherchucker
Funniest movie I’ve ever seen!
movie was amazing!! i’ve seen it twice and it was even better the 2nd time around. everything about it is just so entertaining, there is never a dull moment, and despite the PG-13 rating, it’s was DISGUSTING! a definite buy when it comes to DVD
I cannot top the reviews on this film so let me just say that i loved this film. Its been so long since i have seen a movie such as this. A few little things i didn’t care for were sam raimi’s “comedy” like the blood squirting out the nose, The embalming fluid, and the eyeball scene. I personally understand sams style of comedy but this was just not really needed. This film was actually scarry without being R-rated, which amazed me. ALL the Scenes had a creepy vibe to them and the story was told very, well and plain old creepy!
If you have been wanting another Evil Dead then this should at least satisfy! One of the most fun horror films since Evil Dead 2!!
Holy shit! I was really worried that DMTH wouldn’t live up to the hype, but DAMN! What a fun ride! It had everything you could ever ask for. I almost killed some of the jackasses in the theatre for talking, but that is the only negative I can think of! I can’t wait to see it again!
A true disappointment. I thought was going to awesome, but it wasn’t. Though parts were funny that doesn’t make up for the lousy acting, predictable storyline, and cheap scares.
This movie IS in fact a cut above 99% of PG-13 schlock pumped out there for tweens and teens to gobble up and get their girlfriends to cling to them. It has a great barrage of shock thrills, some interesting effects, and Sam Raimi’s signature over the top silliness at some point. But unfortunately we do have to keep a level head here, even big Evil Deadheads like myself who love when Raimi does horror. On that note, Nobody would believe Justin “I’m a Mac” Long as a college professor. And Allison Lohman, although good enough to play her character in this film doesn’t really add anything to it with her presence. And the scary old Gypsy lady, although doing a nice job with what she is given here does come off like a cross between Helena Bonham’s witch character in Big Fish and Cloris Leachman playing Louis’ mother on “Malcolm in the Middle” with a sloppy, eastern European accent. Again, I do LIKE this movie and definitely recommend it over the usual Twilight inspired garbage and other PG-13 cinematic waste horror fans have endured the last couple years. But lets not poop in our Fanboy pants here… it is still just a cut above average. Predictable, poorly acted, and with cheap thrills. Masterfully executed … but still, this is Junk Food. Not a savory meal or banquet of horrific delight. 3 and a half skulls out of five.
I thought this was crap. Relies on repeated use of “jump” scares and often, the same element. It was cheesy and predictable. I laughed more because of how bad it was than what was supposed to be funny. Everyone in the theater voiced their disgust afterwards. I’m amazed how many people like this.
Drag Me to Hell brings Sam Raimi full circle. From the opening scene to the final scene, he shows us why he is a true cinematic genius. Drag Me to hell was clearly his chance to play before Spidey 4! Dont miss it!!
Far more old school Raimi than I had any right to expect. Made me laugh out loud. Made the guy next to me jump so hard his slush puppy exploded in his hand. Sure it’s not faultless, but when a movie is this much of a riot you’d need something wrong with you to care. Welcome back Sam, we missed you like hell.
Just like everyone else, I would like to welcome back Sam Raimi to the horror fold. Drag me to Hell was both funny and creepy at the same time. I believe this would have been Evil Dead 4 if Bruce Campbell was playing the part…speaking of which, I was expecting to see him do a cameo some where in the film like he does with Raimi’s other non-evil dead films. Even applying the same formulas he used with the Evil dead series from the past, he was still able to pull off a better horror movie than the crap that hollywood has been rolling out these past few years.
TERRIBLE! This was just plain laughable. I was ready to walk out. Actually, the movie stopped working at one point and I almost left, but right when I was about to, it came back on. The same thing happens over and over again! If i saw something come out of someones mouth one more time!! Terrible. Expected more. 1/10.
aka Evil Dead 4 was amazing. Possibly the best horror movie to come out in ten years. The laughs, scares, and gross-outs, it was orgasmic
A real disappointment. So far several films this year have been better. Last House, Friday, Dead Snow, Splinter. Shocked that this is getting such good reviews here. Now, Raimi can you do Evil Dead 4? Ending was good. Justin Long was decent. Rest was cheap scares and almost some Wiley E. Coyote moments. Yikes. Blah.
This movie was too over-the-top. I found myself laughing at how bad it was. The effects were horrible, the acting was horrible, and the plot was predictable. Yet, all this combined made such a cheesy horror film that by the end of the film, I actually enjoyed watching and laughing at the film. There was a scene or two where I did jump, but still, those were cheap scares. Overall, I don’t see why so many people think this is a great horror film (which should have been a comedy instead).
Funny, scary, entertaining. The way horror films used to be. Didn’t even mind the PG-13 rating, because excessive gore wasn’t necessary for this one. Just great, take your torture porn and shove it up your ass.
Loved it. A PG-13 horror movie simply isn’t going to get much better than this. I agree that the Raimi fell back on the cheap scare perhaps a few times too many, but overall a very FUN horror movie.
This is probably the MOST overrated horror film in years. It had the MOST predictable twist and there wasn’t a single scary moment. And that granny was the funniest movie “villain” since Pete in Shaun of the Dead. And the FX were horrible…
Caught the late show last friday night. The Pg-13 rating had me a little worried at first, but this film delivered the goods in a Fed Ex truck made of human skin & bones, fueled by high octane blood, tears, & vomit!!! Lotsa’ jump scares & gore. Tremendous job by Sam Raimi!!! This is the best horror film of the year so far!!! I haven’t heard an audience scream that much in years. Hell, it made one chick cry, which was funny as shit!!! It was hella-wild!!! Great flick!!!
SAM RAIMI IS BACK! AND WITH A FUCKING VENGEANCE! Drag Me To Hell is one of the most enjoyable films I have seen in a while. And from a PG-13 horror film? YES! There are PG-13 horror films that are good, such as 1408 and Cloverfield, but, this has got to be the best PG-13 horror movie I have ever seen, and it probably is a contender for the title of “Best PG-13 Horror Film EVER”. First off, the special effects are spectacular. Sure, you knew that there was some CGI in there, but they are very stylish, slick, and extremely well done. I especially loved the special effects in the scene when Alison Lohman is gathered with the three others who are trying to help her with her ordeal, and the people around her would become possessed by the demon, even the goat they offer as a sacrifice, which brought the seriousness of the scene, and movie, down a notch. But the best was when the professional medium’s assistant becomes possessed. Second, the acting and dialogue was better than I expected. However, Alison Lohman’s performance was a couple of lines away from me trying to enter the world of the movie, and cover her mouth with some duct tape, and yell to her, “HEY! I’m trying to watch a good movie here!” Despite her almost cheesy performance, she was backed by supporting characters who ranged from decent to pretty good. Third, and most important, this movie has real in-your-face scares that make your heart stop for a bit, and bring you back to reality. The fact that the scares are louder than usual may help, but I kept jumping in my seat, and I loved the fact that my heart kept stopping. God knows, I am tired of horror films that display these cheap scares that are merely placed in the movie to tell the audience, “YOU ARE ALL PUSSIES! QUIT SQUEEZING THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR NEIGHBOR!” So, although there is some campiness behind it (thankfully not a lot), Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell is, without a doubt, the best movie that I have seen in theaters this year. For horror films seen at home, Dance of the Dead still reigns supreme (also as my favorite film this year), and the best non-horror film that have seen at home is Gangs of New York, with There Will Be Blood closely behind. Anyway, I implore, no, I demand you to go see this movie!
This movie was… goofy. Expected better from all the rave reviews.
I’m 19 years old and Drag Me To Hell actually scared me! The last time I was really scared at the theatre was during Dead Silence. I literally had chills during the loud scary parts. Christine Brown works as a loan officer, and soon must deal with an elderly Gypsy woman named Mrs. Sylvia Ganush. When she is denied a third extension on her mortgage, she places a terrible curse on Christine. She begins hearing voices, sees the shadows of demons and a lot worse things. Within three days, Christine will be dragged to Hell, unless she can do something about it. I highly recommend that you DRAG ME TO HELL!!!
disappointed..sorry guys, i give it 2 and 1/2….first to be discussed is the thirty minute break that was the ending….the goddamn envelopes made me lose interest…expected more from sir raimi than that….and on a final note, STAY AWAY FROM EVIL DEAD(i.e. floating possessed assistant)
i thought it was completely entertaining and the overall experience left me beyond satisfied.
LOVED IT!!!!
Decent movie. But unfortunatly overated. Just made me miss Evil Dead as it has the same vibe but comes up lacking. If I had a dollar for everytime something went Alison Lohmans mouth, I’d be a rich man.
This is the worst movie review i’ve ever read. Starts off about why isn’t this evil dead 4, wah wah, supernerd! Why would you go see and unfinished test screening of a movie and write a review on that. Dur. But this was an excellent movie! Amazing “Raimi Effects”, humorous and terrifying, this is one of the most scariest movies i’ve ever seen, yet it manages to be funny as well. Welcome back Sam Raimi.
So this is Sam Raimi’s return to horror huh?
Well it’s definitely a great start
I love the cruelty of the film and the whole
curse thing is a fresh take on that sort of demonology horror. Though this isn’t the type of horror I normally get into it was definitely worth going to and i was genuinely scared and was the only one laughing at certain parts? Maybe it was the wrong crowd but it was entertaining and the gross factor was a bit over the top but hey this is Sam Raimi after all.
Overall it certainly wasn’t a disappointment because I got a good scare out of it.
The people here who expected “something different” either A. Forgot who the hell Sam Raimi is and what he did for horror….. or B. Just plain have no idea why people watch horror movies…. Bravo Mr. Raimi I could not have been more pleased….. Unless all the FX were done in camera (i could do without CGI altogether) but understanding time constraints ….. once again I say bravo….
Favorites…. The anvil…. and The Stapler
I haven’t had this much fun at the movies in a long time. Sam Raimi absolutely made a great return to horror with this film. It’s been along time since I’ve jumped or even flinched at a film and this one had it’s fair share of them some expect others thankfully didn’t. Gore is almost no existent but the gross factor is at a high margin due to one elderly gypsy. All in all without raving too much this is a fun film with a predictable yet still exciting ending worth a watch or two and deserving of all it’s high praise.
the best horror comeback ever!
I’m torn about this one. On the one hand, I enjoyed it, and that was probably because I went into it expecting nothing at all. On the other hand, it wasn’t scary in the least, just a ton of jump scares with really good sound (and I have to wonder would they have been as effective without the amped up DTS in my theater). The whole movie felt a lot like what I would’ve imagined Tales From the Darkside movie to have been like had one been made today. The movie was fun (not awesome, like I keep hearing over and over), just the right length, and the ending was… well… let’s just say Raimi telegraphed that bitch way early on. And the CGI blew hot monkey nuts. Overall, though, not a bad night at the movies… at least I didn’t spend this movie wondering what I’d be doing afterward. But seriously, people: I see so many folks here dissing the new Friday the 13th, yet calling this the “perfect horror film”. Riiiiiight.
I’m going to be completely honest with you here. When I first saw the previews from this movie…I wasn’t too impressed. I figure it was going to be another generic horror flick that I would be sitting through resting my head against my hand yawning. I was dead wrong. I was grabbing onto my best friend jumping out of my seat and having a good laugh at the end. This movie is nothing short of incredible. Between the scary build ups that end up scaring you half to death to the funny gags throughout, no other horror movie has had all the perfect elements put together in one single movie let alone make me jump more than once, cringing, then after it all laughing. It was a lot better than I expected for that fact that it ended wrong instead of right. Everything seems so perfect at the end only to be disruppted. I could go on forever telling you every aspect of the movie I adored but I’ll save you all time by telling you to go see it yourself! Most fun I’ve had at the movies in a long while.
An amazing movie for us Sam Raimi fans, others might not get it. Also the sound effects were the most inventive i’ve heard in awhile.
i disliked this movie greatly. i went in expecting Raimi as a horror director, but got the spider-man director doing a bad horror movie. poor acting, predictable twist, and just not scary.
This is the film that I had hoped “the unborn”, “the return”, “the grudge”, “the ring”, “shutter”, etc etc would have been, relying on spooky atmosphere, wonderfuly designed visuals this film really has everythin in a horor film that you would hope for. Sam Raimi who has been busy since his original Evil Daed trilogy making the spiderman trilogy, the gift and my personal favorite Raimi made film a simple plan.
It’s a blast watching this film and this is a perfect example of the kind of horror film I do prefer over films like martyrs, inside, saw 4,5 and all that stuff. this is far much better stuff in terms of Entertainment, i want to watch films to be entertained, not to be made to squeemish at unecessary gore and violence.
bravo mr. Raimi…this is as close to Evil Dead IV we will ever get, and i can settle with that.
That old witch was crazy, first off. Anyway, I found this film to be entertaining but I found myself laughing at the cheesy effects and ‘serious, brutally serious’ moments. It had a good plot and all, but eh… I wouldn’t pay money to go see it twice.
Most likely if you happen to enjoy any films from Ghost House Pictures in any way you won’t be disappointed by this one – which I think other folks out there have neglected to mention. If you’re expecting anything close to Evil Dead, you’ll probably be a bit disappointed by it with exception the obvious nods at it during certain points. Overall it is an entertaining movie, but it seems to lack something I can’t quite put my finger on at the moment. I wouldn’t go on to say it was a defiant return to horror for Raimi, but he definitely did make a good effort. If anything, I hope this film points out that Evil Dead is best kept the way it is – if you don’t want it turned into just another Grudge film.
What a refreshing change from the torture porn that’s so popular now. Welcome back Mr Raimi. It’s not as good as Evil Dead 2, and there’s no Bruce Campbell, but I’ll take this over 99% of the rest of the crap-fest horror films out anyday.
Predictable. Crappy CGI effects. Horrible acting. This movie is just a mash up of bad horror movie cliches with a bit of Evil Dead thrown in for the Raimi fans. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Way, way overrated and not worth your time or money. A last ditch rental at best.
wow this movie was pretty ugh. Am I the only one who say a talking goat!!!!! Way to much CGI!!!! Also what was with random things going in her mouth does Raimi have and oral thing? It did have a strong first 30 min. though
Now you’ve probably read a few bad reviews on this movie and then some good ones. You don’t know who to believe and if you should even try with this movie. Well I’m not going to persuade you but I am going to tell you what to expect.
In this movie Sam Raimi pushes the f***ing limit of what you can put in a PG-13 movie, with blood spraying, green sh** being puked out, and all other sorts of weirdness on this fun ride to HELL!!! Now the lead actress was a bit different for the roll but she fit pretty well and she turned into a character that I didn’t know if I should hate or care for, which I liked.
After she pisses off the old b**ch and she wants her revenge it turns into this full out brawl which was so fun to watch and so weird and some what gross, you just have to experience it.
I thnk the biggest reason this movie is being put down so bad is because it is PG-13, and as much as I F***ING HATE PG-13 HORROR MOVIES, I still gave this one a chance after hearing the reviews. But some people don’t give this movie a chance and go in to look for the downsides to the movie or the acting wasn’t good enough or, my fav, comparing it to Evil Dead. This movie wouldn’t and couldn’t come close to Evil Dead so why compare? Watch this movie as its own movie, not somehting from a horror legend taht MUST BE GREAT!!!!
This was a fun and enjoyable ride and I loved the ending so much. I’m not going to ruin it for you but the ending is predictable. I do believe Raimi made a good return to horror, even tho it was PG-13, and I believe he pushes the limit to what is acceptable in PG-13 movies. and the throwbacks to the Evil Dead movies were awesome in this. 8/10, give this movie a chance. 8/10!
I THOUGHT IT WAS A PRETTY OK MOVIE….IT WAS MOSTLY DISGUSTING MORE THAN ANYTHIN ELES…WITH THE OLD LADY THROWING UP IN THE OTHER GIRLS MOUTH..AFTER LOOKIN AT THAT I WANTED 2 THROW UP
I had no intrest in seeing this movie until i read so many great reviews so i decided to check it out. It was a great movie and one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. This movie was all about trying to creep you out and make you jump up out of your seat alot. I tried putting my self in the main characters shoes and I would of gone crazy. I doubt any one would really have trouble sleeping after watching this but I definetly recommend it. I also suggest not going in expecting to see the most amazing movie ever. The acting was ok, the story was solid, and there wasnt a second that I found my self wondering when it would finished because i was having such a good time. I also went back and watched Evil Dead 2 and it might just be me but some of the things that happen in Evil Dead 2 are simliar to what happens in this movie. But ya you should definetly check it out, I thought the theater experience was good because those loud speakers really had to the jumping scares that this movie is all about.
This movie sucked!
My friend and I were so bored.
We wanted to walk out of the theater 1/4 of the way through. However we spent 11 dollars per ticket plus snack money so we didn’t ditch like we wanted to.
It was cheesy as hell. Comedy and horror don’t mix.
We should have seen X Men Origins instead.
DO NOT bother to watch this in the theater let alone rent it.
I feel like I can’t trust this site at all when it comes to movie ratings. Whoever thinks this movie is even decent needs to go see a shrink.
Though I don’t agree that it’s “perfect,” I really enjoyed DMTH. I was kind of giggling all the way through and it was more the kind of movie I loved as a kid than anything. If you were looking for a gritty, humourless horror show, there’s an abundance of that elsewhere (some of my favorites!), but this ain’t it. One problem is that the trailer is misleading. The main character was written very Ash-like i.e. a bit pathetic and goofy while heroic. I wish Alison Lohman hadn’t tried to play it so straight and instead had more fun with the role. She’s essentially a hapless, cursed loan officer running from soul sucking demons. Laugh it up! Supposedly Ellen Paige was going to do this and frankly she would have been pretty awesome with her natural touch of snarkiness.
There are numerous Evil Dead references for us stupid fanboys. When Apple Dude (that’s his name, right?) suggests going to his relatives’ cabin pointing out that it has lots of “pretty trees” I almost wet myself. And oh, the talking goat. And the killer hanky!!! Loved it to pieces.
Comedy, horror, and cheese is a difficult combo, but when it’s right it’s DELICIOUS. In fact, horrorcomedy with cheese should be the new flavor of Combos snacks. Yummy.
a very entertaining original horror movie. dont miss it
(Review written by romantic comedy lover wife, Bullsh*t bio by the way)
My husband has been dragging me and a group of friends to horror flicks since Blair Witch. I personally can’t handle it, wake up screaming, bad dreams etc.
I was finally looking forward to this one (I know that pissed him off a little) But it was promoted on MTV and was rated PG 13.
You will all be annoyed to know that I loved it! Finally a movie I could laugh to and understand underlying hypocrisy.
Right away I said, “Hey babe she used to be a fat girl.” Why would Sam Rami want me to know that? I can only think he was trying to talk to me. (no I wasn’t fat) talk to someone who has felt left out of horror films just because I don’t know who Dario Argento is.
I’m not saying I didn’t have to leave when the fly flew up her nose, but I do have to say I hope this movie can teach me that being scared can be fun.
Hope there is more to come. Liza
The good points to this movie are many, Sam Raimi delivers an awesome horror movie without using extreme brutality, rape and all that other uncomfortable feeling stuff. This PG-13 movie proves that a great horror movie does not have to be rated R with such things in it. This movie had alot of scares in it as well as splashes of comedy which made it more entertaining. The acting was good, the old lady was scary looking and the plot was awesome.
Sitting here at the computer trying to think of a decent review to write for this film and feel that nothing can come close as to what I think of this film without writing a huge synopsis basically repeating everything that most everyone else has written. It was funny, somewhat bloody, and gave some cheap jumps. Everything that I would expect from Sam Raimi and wasn’t disappointed. Maybe not the most awesome film he has done, but in my opinion, entertaining and will belong in my DVD collection when it hits video. Also loved the anvil on the head scene. Reminded me of I believe Evil Dead 2 when the ghoul ladies popped out when her head was smashed by the basement door and her eye goes flying through the air. Laughed my butt off at that scene. Sorry if I got the wrong film. Gonna have to watch those again.
I thought this flick was entertaining enough, in the vein of the Evil Dead movies, but not really that clever. It was certainly gross enough and had the obligatory jokes necessary to this genre but the last third of the movie was pure dross. Leaving aside the poor acting, talking goat, sheer number of disgusting items that went down Chris’s throat, I knew instantly that the envelope she took from the car floor had her bf’s stupid coin and not the cursed button – that ruined the tension for me immediately. Overall, it wasn’t great and I didn’t love it. What a drag.
This movie was so much fun to watch and i had a really great time for once going out to the movies. I didn’t leave feeling ripped off that’s for sure.
I thought it had the perfect mix of horror and comedy and made me feel like i have to own this when it comes out to dvd !! I love too how it ended and makes me wonder if Sam would do a sequel perhaps Drag Me Out of Hell haha =)
What a let down. I don’t know why exactly, I just really didn’t like this movie. I didn’t like any of the characters at all. The whole plot was pretty lame and uninteresting. The “serious” parts like the seance just didn’t come off that serious. The only part that made me chuckle was the platinum card bit. It was just a let down. Too much of the same shit happening over and over again, lots of wind and people getting thrown around.
In one sentence, it seemed like someone was trying to make a cheap rip off of Evil Dead.
This movie delivers exactly what it promises to. It’s classic Raimi– effective horror that never takes itself too seriously.
I did love it. any movie that actually makes me jump in my seat is good by my books.
Though I do wish I hadn’t been able to see the ending coming for the last 30 mins.
Was very good tho.
Fun, classic Raimi. A bit too predictable for the hardcore horror fan but nonetheless an entertaining movie.
Great movie, only complaint is too much CGI.
i hated it….whether or not i was in a bad mood or what i dunno. I have a few general complaints though firstly the cgi was really annoying and bad and i just arent a fan of cgi in horror films for me it just does not belong and is awful. I thought the performances were awful especially Justin Long and Alison Lohman, who just suddenly incredibly wooden and just generally poor performances and i just thought the continued over reliance on loud jump scares was really irritating i felt like just shouting at the screen mix it up a little bit and attempt to create a little bit of geniune tension but no it was just the same thing over and over again, where everything would quiet and then the loud string music kick in, for me it was just lazy and poor and i quite frankly expected a little more, whether it was my fault and i had built the film up in my mind to be more than it was i dont think i’ll ever know but my general advise to you is just avoid this movie like the plague !!
I don’t even really know how to begin. I went to see this film not really knowing what to expect, I’d seen all the great reviews on it but somehow I thought to myself “this still may be a crap fest… I mean the remake of Black Christmas got great reviews and that was just awful”. I grabbed some theatre munchies and sat myself down in anticipation of being let down once again by a genre that never used to disappoint me. As the movie played across the big screen in front of me I felt like a small child on Christmas morning filled with so much joy and excitement and I could hardly contain myself. In short, this movie was awesome. I laughed, I jumped, I cringed at the old lady and the disgusting liquids that would spew from her wrinkled old mouth, I loved every minute of it. I left the theatre with high hopes for the future of my beloved genre, hoping that “Drag Me To Hell” starts a new trend of original and fun horror films as opposed to a slew of remakes and other half witted attempts at horror movies that we have been force fed over the past few years. I can’t wait until the DVD release of this film so I can watch it over and over from the comfort of my cold, dark bedroom and remember what it is like to watch a truly amazing horror film. This movie is an instant classic, and I give a big thanks to the entire crew of “Drag Me To Hell”. In conclusion, I apologize that this review isn’t full of spoilers but I just don’t want to ruin this film for anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of seeing it yet.
Well it certainly wasn’t perfect, but it was a shitload of fun. Lol! moments, cringy moments, great editing, but low on real scares and kind of predictable. Rather go with low expectations and be impressed, than going, expecting a masterpiece and not getting it.
This is just a fucking great Sam Raimi movie. ‘Nuff said.
It was great, had the scary parts it needed, was succsessfully funny. It was predictable but still enjoyable.
Sigh where do i even start?
I was looking forward to this movie ever since BD gave it a review sooo long ago. Than we all found out that this movie was going to be pg13 and i know half the people who wanted to see this knew that we were going to get fucked over. This movie might as well be the #1 feel good comedy of the year. Nothing was scary, predictable, and a horrible ending. Who the fuck thought that this was a return to horror??? The Mask has more frightening scenes.
I hated this movie so much and now i hate Sam Raimi, he is not the same guy who did evil dead at all so stop saying that shit he is now the guy who ruined spider man 3 and drag me to hell!!!
The Godfather of Horror is back: A classic Raimi-masterpiece, super-scary and super-funny at the same time. Excellent!
Very disappointing. The CGI was 2nd rate (if you’re going to use it, spend a few bucks! – some of it looked like Wile E Coyote’s out-takes!) and the uneasy playing for laughs every few minutes messed up the flow of the film.
Raimi’s production probably sounded good before shooting, but this is a confused attempt at being all-round entertainment/horror – a hard thing to do and unfortunately a failed attempt here.
And don’r start me on the terrible acting (more like a school play than a feature film)!
I absolutely adore the evil dead films, but this movie was just ok.
i dont really care what people said about this. I belive it was awsome!!!!! There was a great mixture of horror and comedy. To bad for the company cuz no one is watchin it!
I can’t believe some of the comments on here. This is genuinely one of the scariest movies I’ve seen in years. Perhaps not so much because of plot or so, but there were quite a few scares where I jumped (and even covered my eyes once).
There was a fantastic mix of scares/gross outs/comedy for my personal taste. I thought the acting was appropriate for this movie. It just seemed.. right, I suppose. I completely enjoyed it and wouldn’t hesitate to see it again.
About it being PG-13, well.. I will admit, I was not even aware of this fact until I read it in several disgruntled reviews AFTER I had already seen it in the theater. To me, the rating for this movie is a complete non-issue.
One of the best Horror films in years. It really felt like you were watching a Raimi film. Suspense was brilliant. Overall an awesome piece of cinema.
Finlly gave in & went to see this the other night. And holy shit was i not disappointed! Jumps, screams, loadsalaughs, gross out parts, everything u need in a good horror. Even if the cinema was full of giggling girlies! Loved all the Evil Dead references. Raimi, you’re a legend. Now get the finger out and do Evil Dead 4!
Genius. Sam Raimi on top-form, and i’m relieved to see him return to his Evil Dead roots, having tantalised with the not too bad ‘The Gift’ and the famous birth of Doc Ock in Spiderman 2.
This film has it all. Gore, laughs and most importantly; scares. I mean how many other films can you say have had a hankie which has made you jump?
From the moment the film opens, with its black and white Universal logo and dramatic credits, you know you’re in for something special. An old school horror flick. And that’s exactly what you get.
My father, who joined me in watching it, first complaint was “why on earth would you put a talking goat in a horror film?” My answer “it’s Sam Raimi.”
It felt great to watch a film you could tell Raimi had fun writing, with its brilliant sense of humour and use of clever scares.
Fantastic!!!
Awesome. Fucking awesome.
Sam Raimi is back! This movie rocked so hard it was unbelievable. It ranges from being laugh out loud hilarious to spine-tingling terror, often in the space of a few frames. It would be criminal if I told anything; there is a particular scene that will have hardcore Evil Dead fans rocking the aisles with excitement. Go see this movie right now. All horror fans must see this film. Hell, everybody should see it!!

Great movie! It’s a breath of fresh air a world of torture porn. Not your normal PG-13 movie!
After waiting a decade, Sam Raimi has finally returned to horror. I must say I am impressed and highly satisfied with what his latest project has to offer. On premiere night, I was giddy with anticipation and must say all my expectations were met and surpassed. I am a huge fanatic of the Evil Dead trilogy, so my expectations were even higher.
A majority of the audience were letdown by the PG-13 rating. I must say this is the strongest PG-13 ever. Some scenes were so grotesque like the cake scene, that my mind boggled why this didn’t warrant an R rating. Films rarely scare me, but Drag me to hell made me jump out of my seat at least four times. It also made me laugh, which was intended. This simply was the best time I had at the theaters.
I also loved Alison Lohman and Justin Long. Of course, Bruce Campbell would have been better, but both Alison and Justin were great and I could sense the chemistry between them. Also, the character that plays Mrs. Ganush was excellent and Ganush couldn’t be any better. Also, some parts were just down right disgusting, but that was also intended. Some parts blended in gross, scary, and funny coherently. That’s what was astonishing about the film.
People ask if this film shares a resemblance to either Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2. I must say it shares both, which is even better. It shares the same fright factor as the original, while also keeping the humor in its sequel. Drag me to hell is easily the best movie of the year so far. It just might be the most fun I had at the theatre. It’s smart, witty, hilarious, gross, and scary and all of that is blended coherently. Just simply awesome.
“Drag Me To Hell” did what a lot of horror movies are afraid to do: add a bit of comedy to the scares. This movie was scary, funny, and bloody disgusting
all at the same time, which made for a very entertaining ride.
The only problem i really had with it was that my sympathies went out to the main character, so seeing everything that happened to her *ahem* no spoilers* I really didn’t enjoy that aspect or outcome. I realize the good guys can’t always win *no spoiler!!!!* but still, it detracted a little.
All in all, it was a pretty sweet film! I like Sam Raimi.
I’m amazed at the insane amount of praise this movie has recieved, since I found it to be below average at best. Yes, we all love Raimi for the Evil Dead series, but that doesn’t make up for DMTH. While I understand that he movie was meant as a Horror/Comedy, I wasn’t impressed with either side of the film.
The CGI in this film was terrible, and I’m not one of the elitists who are against all CGI. I think when used appropriately it works wonders for a film, but I’ve seen better graphics in PS3 games.
The horror aspect of this film was nearly nonexistant. Save for maybe one or two legitimate “jumps” there were no really creepy undertones and the atmosphere was rather dull.
The comedy was, for lack of a better explanation, not funny. None of the cute one liners or any of the funny moments got so much as a giggle out of me.
The story, again, was unbelievable and idiotic. Not to mention the countless gaps and holes that just leave you shaking your head and mildly annoyed.
The film’s one redeeming quality were the grossouts. The grossouts were excellent and never failed to make me cringe, a couple of times i nearly gagged they were so effective.
As a whole, i found DMTH to be dull, slow, and a dissapointment. 4/10
It was so good but we need a sequel – I really want this movie to go down in history as a FEEL GOOD HORROR MOVIE, which I can watch over and over again – Please Raimi – get us a sequel – I loved the movie – even the end but I won’t revisit it again because I just loved Allison so much – SPOILER ALERT – BOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-I want a Sequel and let it be DRAG ME UP FROM HELL – SPOILER ALERT!!! WINK! WINK! lOVED IT.Smashing and Fun but Could have done much better with the end.Giving it 8 and Here’s to Allison Kicking BUTT!!! Get us a sequel …..RAIMI -R U listening?gEt us a sequel and I will gv it 10.
The Good:
-Sam Raimi’s Return to horror
-Good acting
-Jumpy scenes
-Had a few laughs
-Great story
-Kept you watching
-Good opening scene
-Good cinematography
The Bad:
-None
Overall:
Wow. I havent seen a horror movie this great in years. It was heavan(Hell XP) on earth for me. Well on screen ahaha. A must see for everyone.
It always good to see Raimi. back at doing what he does bet, now im not saying this movie was great. but still it left me feeling good. check it out if u havent already…
Most definitely A Straight Classic…….Period.
It’s not as delicious as the Evil Dead movies but still Sam Raimi from start to finish! Loved it.
Of course this film isn
Predictable, cheesy (in a roll your eyes way) and very unsatisfying. I expected alot more from Raimi’s “return to horror”. I simply could not have cared less about Lohman’s whiny, selfish character, expecially after the kitten. I was also sad to see that Justin Long’s character was underdeveloped, with his talent he could have added much to the movie. The button/coin bit could be smelled a mile away. In my opinion the best part of the whole movie was the end, it was well deserved. All in all, I’m glad I only paid the matinee price but still I wish I had waited for the DVD.
It seems to me that either people really liked this movie, or just absolutely hated it. I was pleased with Sam Raimi’s return to horror and thought the movie was pretty decent. It had the feel of an Evil Dead movie at times, but I thought some of the acting left a little to be desired. I could have done without some of the corny stuff; i.e. the talking goat, but overall it was a decent film.
I decided to go see the new movie “Drag Me To Hell.” Here is what I thought:
For a Sam and Ivan Raimi flick, it was pretty cool!!!! I was very surprised to see that there were so many great ‘jump-out’ scary scenes for a PG-13 and there were some great make-up effects too. There were points where the movie scared the hell out of me and I would jump back or scream out obscenities.
For those who know the Raimi bros and their unique style of horror, you’d know that there would be some pretty funny moments in any of their horror movies. This movie isn’t an exception. There were several subtle humor points throughout the movie and I really enjoyed the scene with the goat (It’s not that kind of scene) and the scene where the old lady attacks the young woman both alive and dead. There were some points where it was so sick and gross that it was funny. Overall it was pretty scary and pretty funny at the same time.
every day i think back and my opinion changes …. i think it was crap or i think it was fun and good o’l fashioned comedy/horror … and had something we dont see anymore, some classic frights and gross out humour .. the goat was hillarious but the excorcism was lame … But i think Sam did a pretty good job .. over all it was entertaining
If I only knew where to start…Ohh wait I do!
Going to see the movie drag me to hell made me very excited, mainly for the fact I hadn’t seen a good excorcism movie in years (not that I believe in any of that crap anyway) Drag me to hell…Was satisfying, it not only was scary but very humorous. Although sometimes the Humor got in the way making some parts of the film distasteful. In the end PimpNastyDeluxe gives this film a better than o.k. rating
hands down best pg-13 horror movie ever
sam raimi is back and he does one hell of a job.
the evil dead films are excellent and i enjoyed drag me to hell so much.
it was scary.
it was funny.
it was cheesy( in a good way)
and it was sam raimi back on track with horror.
drag me to hell, by raimi.
i heard interesting things about this film so went into the cinema full of expectasion and was not dissapointed. from start to finish i thought dmth was a instant horror classic, every slick bit of film making craft used to make this a real roller coaster ride of a film.
i like the way raimi used new and old influences in this film, not too much cgi just good solid characters and purely old skool type horror ethics. also the use of objects of various kinds used to orally violate the main character, always makes the viewer uncomfortable. to me, this is how films should be, true to the roots of there genre and made to give the audience a nice brown stain in their pants. congrats to all involved in this one, a horror gem of a film!
Definitely what you’d expect from Raimi. what a FUN ride
Welcome back Sam Raimi.
I saw this late.. Last week late. Haha.
I love it though!!
Without a doubt, the best horror movie I have seen since Saw. Freakin’ awesome! This is how horror movies should be!
What a great film. I love this movie it is absoutly awsome one of the best horror movies ive ever seen!
Okay I’m just going to say it, I WAS DISAPPOINTED! Maybe because I’m an experienced horror fan but I didn’t find anything terrifyingly scary or as most people are saying hilarious about this flick, it was just very goofy and cartoonish but I will give them one thing and it’s that it was intense in some parts and has a brilliant sound/music score that forced me to jump in some parts and I applaud them for a great effort and job in that department. I thought the acting was pretty solid with both Alison Lohman and Justin Long being very likable and charming and worth rooting for as always but I have to say that Ellen Page should have done this goofy horror movie instead because I think she would have owned the part more and I just pictured her more for the role. I really wanted to love this movie but I wanted to see a nicely blended or pure horror movie that was highly praised by critics not a goofy/cheesey one. This is not Sam Raimi’s best horror/comedy to date The Evil Dead still is unfortunately but I’m glad that he is back in the genre so maybe his next horror offering will back up the good reviews if it gets them that is. Overall this is an ridiculously overrated horror romp that was not what it was all cracked up to be but it did have this entertaining, grindhouse charm to it and has an memorable villain and has an better effort from the cast and crew than most horror movies these days but it doesn’t deserve an 94% on rotten tomatoes I mean come on, I guess the critics got caught up in all the hype. Maybe Jennifer’s Body will do a better job at blending humor and horror together because this one kind of lost it’s steam and fear factor once it started to get a bit silly. See it drunk, it’ll definitely might be more entertaining that way;
“Drag Me to Hell” was by far one of the most fun movie experiences I have ever had. Raimi had such a perfect blend of horror and comedy, without overdoing either element. I cannot wait for the DVD release and I’m sure this will be a constant horror re-watch for me, up there with the classics like “Nightmare on Elm Street”.
Full of really bad/cheap scare tactics (music, things jumping out at you, etc.) The storyline wasn’t very good, and I’m sure we all figured out the ending to this one a loooooong time ago. Mostly good for the humor, that’s about it.
Now this is what modern horror should be like. Ignore all the teenage slasher movies out there, and go see this! It’s perfect in every possible way, the plot is well developed, the acting is perfect, the ideas are fresh and the scares are always there. The only this I found a problem with this movie, is the sometimes re – cycled ideas from early on in the movie. One thing will happen, and this later on in the movie, a similar thing will happen. Get me? Anyway, Drag Me To Hell is a very enjoyable horror. This is old school American horror. This is how it should be done nowa – days. Great CGI, make up effects and eree atmospheres. Drag Me To Hell is a wonderful horror, and should be watched by all! Can’t wait for the release of the DVD!
Amazing, all horror movies should be like this, even if they are pg-13.
Drag me to hell is the 2nd best hororr movie of the year right on the same level as the final destination.
The actign in this movie was great by everybody expecially alison lohman!!!
The terror was greta and had me jumping and truly scared for the first time in a movie theatre ever!!!
The comedy was also great in this film with the cat and everything
This movie is completely awesome and was just a fun movie and will be one great horror film for everybody to see and will go down as a modern horror classic.
One of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in a theatre in a very long time. Horror or otherwise. Great characters, funny situations, and over the top gruesome moments. The fact that it is PG-13 means nothing. Also, great in your face ending. Must see for horror fans.
Good, but not great. I won’t bitch about the use of CGI in a few scenes, but I will bitch about one thing in particular that lowered the film a bit for me.
The ending absolutely SUCKED for me. And the reason why it sucked so much for me is because the rest of the film is really fun. With a film this fun, Raimi should have came up with a better ending. Just so damn generic and predictable and even the very last scene felt ho-hum compared to the rest of the film.
Overall though, this is still a fun horror movie that any true fan of the genre should enjoy.
“Drag Me to Hell” was the best movie I’ve seen this year. I think that’ll still be the case when 2010 rolls around. Anybody can throw 2009 names at me, and I’ll always have “Hell” to top it with.
It played out perfectly, it was performed perfectly, the scares were SPECTACULAR and hilarious. There’s so much good and no bad. When I go back to this movie in my memory, I can’t think of a single moment throughout that I even thought remotely “When is this going to end?”. As a matter of fact, it was more either “HOW could this possibly end?”(not the ending, we all knew she’d die, but how was the question) and “Why can’t all directors be this sensational?”
It was great. That’s the least I can say. It was great, great, great, fun, funny, bloody, amazing, scary, funny, great, funny, funny, great, great, Ganush.
The funny think, I personally think, is how disappointed I was with the PG-13 rating, yet there was no R-rated flick this year (or last year at that) that could outdo this amazing film.
There’s nothing else to say. Really. I can’t go on about how great it is constantly, that’s just a waste. It’s just… amazing. October 20th is going to be great. Everybody’s got to purchase this DVD.
Everybody.
Sam Raimi’s return to horror, 1-10? 100.
cool
Simply brilliant. This is why we all love Raimi.
horror classic
Sam Raimi’s return to horror is funny gross out fun with a bit of slapstick thrown in for good measure.
fantastic
Quite possibly the worst movie i’ve seen this year, cheap scare tactics like faces jumping towards you and loud noises, and the story is quite boring.
I had wanted to see it for a long time, and when I finally did I wanted to turn it off after the first 30minutes.
Was expecting a lot better from Sam Raimi.
great movie.
Fun and good scares.
A lot of people here didn’t like it. here in Mexico They call it a “churro”. Churro = bad movie bla bla…
SIMPLY 9/10 .. Raimi is Back to real Horror movies
the only thing didnt like in this movie when
the mun turns demon and dancing in the Air
it was funny but it shouldnt be funny
cus its horror and i like the way Raimi
did it just like Evil Dead Style
Not bad. I’m not huge on supernatural horror anyway but it was satisfying. Pretty intense and disgusting gore throughout. Elements of the excorcist and poltergeist are present. Worth a view for for sure.
CGI just won’t Die. And PG-13? What the hell is that about? Sub-Par compared to what it could’ve/should’ve been. Decent story though, some enjoyable moments of disgust and fun throughout. Definitely worth seeing. It’s no Evil Dead though. The vomit scene was great.
Very entertaining. Not RAIMI’S best but still watchable.Be careful with those crazy old ladies at the banks.
Sam Raimi is back at what he knows best, making fun, gross and sometimes scary horror films.
Although the effects was a bit fake looking at some times, and a couple of scenes was played out a bit to much, I really enjoyed this movie.
Simply a very entertaing horror movie. I saw this in theaters when it first came out and really liked it. I think it showed that pg-13 horror can work with out it seeming really corny or lame like most pg-13 horror movies had been. While this movie was entertaining one thing I think raimi did on purpose was make you want to see alison lohman fail. If you look at everything she did her character seemed like she had exactly what she had coming to her and that kind of made the ending predictable but it definitely didn’t hurt the movie. This was probably one of the better horror movies I had seen in quite some time.
Awful. It’s amazing what hype will get you to watch. This sucked 20 minutes in and kept getting stupider. Horrible acting, godawful dialogue, an utter lack of suspense or terror, and shitty special effects, Raimi should be humiliated that this was his return to “horror”. It was like a Syfi channel original. Just when I thought it couldn’t get more asinine, it managed to prove me wrong. I realize it was supposed to be campy, but Evil Dead it was not. The parts we laughed at I don’t think were the inteneded onces. I can’t believe people recommended this to me. Everyone watching it agreed…what an overrated, idiotic pile of shit.
Loved this film. Watched it last night and it rocked. I couldn’t help laughing at times because of the similarities between this film and evil dead. Def. worth a watch! Loved it!
“Wow!”
That was the first thing that passed through my head when the titles for Drag Me To Hell got slammed up on the screen after the opening scene.
“Wow! That was so incredibly awesome!”
That was the first thing that passed through my head when the titles for Drag Me To Hell got slammed up on the screen after the final scene.
If you like movies, at all, you owe it to yourself to see this on the big screen if you get a chance. Since you’re almost assured to plunk down your hard earned cash for some really bad movies every year, and probably this summer, you owe it to yourself to make sure you get your money’s worth out of your theater going experience when you get the chance. This is one of those chances. We have remakes and sequels galore waiting in the wings for us to lament and skewer for their utter ineptitude. Take the chance while you’ve got it to get into a theater and watch something so incredibly drunk and giddy on it’s own wild enthusiasm to just have a blast for an hour and a half in the way only a movie seen in theaters can produce. This is a film made specifically for the theater going experience.
I don’t say that to mean you have to be there to see the special effects on the big screen. I don’t say it because like so many of the summer blockbusters, it’s just so big and loud you can’t get the recreate the same experience on a home theater, no matter how high the quality. I say because of those things and because you need to see this movie with other people. Yes, sometimes seeing a movie in a theater full of other people really sucks. Someone’s on the phone, someone won’t shut up, the jerk in front of you is text messaging through half of it (so your brain by it’s very design wants to look at the bright blue light instead of the screen), all of this is true. But, Drag Me To Hell is worth all of that, because those people will be completely unable to do all of that while this movie is going on. It’s going to reach out and grab them by the hair and scream, “NOT TODAY BUDDY! WE’RE GOING TO HELL ON A BULLET TRAIN AND YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO MISS A SECOND OF IT” It’s H.P Lovecraft on amphetamines. There’s something dark, nasty and foreboding out there, but it’s not waiting for you or stalking you, it’s not your own sense of dread playing tricks on you. The dark and foreboding thing is howling with laughter while it drags you out the door and all the way to hell.
Sam Raimi (to some of us will always be the man who made The Evil Dead trilogy), best known to most people as the director of the Spiderman trilogy has crafted an intensely fun, dizzily fast paced, utterly accepting of it’s own silliness, thrilling, fright flick. I say fright flick very purposefully. This really isn’t a horror film in the way we’ve traditionally come to understand them. There’s little to no blood and body parts. It’s not mean and nasty. It’s not sadistic or perverse. It’s not subversive. But it’s going to have you jumping out of your seat on multiple ocassions if I’m any indicator. There are a few seriously gross moments, but they have as much in common with a Will Ferrell or Borat gross out as they do with a Quentin Tarantino or Eli Roth (the director of Hostel) gross out. I’m not going to spoil it, but there were two particular things I’ve never seen before which struck me as having come from a place of only the most inspired lunacy. Do I laugh or do I say “EEEEWWWW”? Hopefully, both.
Drag Me To Hell practically dares you to try and take it too seriously and not have a good time. It does so in the same way a good friend who knows you’ve been working too hard or studying too much would say, “C’mon already, it’s not going to kill you to just have some fun for a few hours,” and actually knows how what to do so you do have fun.
It’s not going to be a classic film in the sense of being an “important” film. It’s not something they’re going to be showing in film classes in twenty years. It will however be a film for movie fanatics, and it will probably last a pretty long time. Twenty years from now, when some teenager reaches thirteen or fourteen and his or her love for film has really taken off, someone who knows this, and understands it is going to say, “you should really see Drag Me To Hell,” and either give them a copy or tell them how to find one. This is not going to be the kind of film which is taken seriously because of the weight of the subject matter, the incredible level of intellect or emotional layering involved, but because it’s a film which is completely committed to and successful at just being a frighteningly good time. There’s no artifice, no pretensions and it works. If you’re not a fan horror films, Drag Me To Hell is still a fun movie because it never takes it’s frights or it’s gross outs too seriously, and it’s not in that self referentially comedic way which has become so commonplace and overdone in the last decade. It’s just a funny, high speed bullet train of a fright flick, with no ulteri
Are you kidding me? Take Sam Raimi’s name off this movie and it is at best a straight to dvd flop. The special effects were terrible, a lot of the dialoge was corny, and the story was weak. To say this movie was average is being very generous. I am so glad I didn’t spend my money at the theatre for this…….. C’MON SAM!!
Wow do I regret renting this. Full of unintentionally funny vomiting scenes. Painful to watch. I’m really surprised this has scored do high.
horrible movie, terrible cgi effects. I don’t know how people actually think this is a good movie. You need to wake up, this movie was boring and kept dragging.
Too much vomiting scenes and I felt it was too slow then ending was not very good but I suppose it was suppose to be twist to movie. I am glad I rented it.
This was one weird movie. It was fun, funny, but never really scary. I saw the ending of the film coming from a mile away.
what a great movie!!!! gory/funny/silly at times..i’m glad i saw it in the theater, but will definitely own it. it’s not art, folks, just a fun 90 min ride! get on!!
Silly, boring, weird, CGI…I turned it off after 60 minutes. Need I say more?
Boring, silly, stupid movie with TERRIBLE acting and even worse CGI. Why do film makers continue to abuse CGI? Can’t they tell it’s ridiculous? Also, why do so many people like this movie?
sam raimi still has the horror in him.
this movie is a horror movie but it has a little of darkman and evil dead 2. he should stop with spiderman and start in the horror. GO SAM!!!!
Entertaining.
Great movie. I loved it! Sam Raimi never seems to dissapoints me. I enjoyed every minute of this movie. It was actually kinda creepy. I would give this movie a check. I really liked it!
Just rented and watched this. Had a couple fun scenes I suppose but overall…wow…this movie is completely overrated. Obviously, the CGI is hilariously bad at times. I didn’t hold this against the movie too much because I didn’t feel the movie was going for a realistic blood and gore. It felt more a comedy/horror than anything. Almost in the vain of Army of Darkness, but no quite that far of course.
What really killed the movie was the completely obvious ending. About 3/4′s the way in there is a scene in a car where something happens that completely destroys any anticipation for the ending because you already know what is going to happen. Just really put a damper on the end. I don’t wanna say more than that because I don’t wanna spoil it but, then again, the movie pretty much spoils itself.
I’m guessing the only people that would find the movie ultimately satisfying are those that don’t pay attention to movies while they watch them or that are completely oblivious. I’m neither. So it gets a 5/10.
this movie is just fun. the movie has a brisk pace with alot going on throughout. the old lady was creepy and the effects were gory but fun. its just an overall entertaining movie that shouldnt be taken to seriously. im usually not a big sam raimi fan but i really enjoyed this one. the ending i expected but it was still pretty cool and the poltergeist scenes with the black goat were intense. i recommend this movie as it has a little of everything, blood, action, humor, and a great ending!
I wholeheartedly agree with Bonham2. This movie was ridiculously bad. I believe each movies has it’s strengths and weaknesses but this just was stupid. Please don’t waste your time. Cheers.
One of the best horror movies of 2009 and home just in time for Halloween. The direction is taut, the acting/characters are relatively hammy (which fits perfectly with the overall tone of the film) and the pace is brisk.
Those looking for terror aren’t going to find it here: a lot of the scares involve sudden loud noises. However, those looking for Sam Raimi’s return to slapstick horror with buckets of slime and creepy moments will be thoroughly entertained.
This flick is more like a quick jaunt through a well constructed haunted house than a terrifying experience. Cheesy? Sure. Enjoyable? You bet!
Other than the horrific cgi this is a terrific horror movie. Never in my life did I think I would get grossed out at a PG-13 movie but this one has some great gag inducing scenes. Worth a purchase.
Its pretty good, but I don’t think this is good enough for it to be “Sam Raimi’s return to horror”. I expected more. With all the positive reviews for this film, I thought that the “PG-13″ thing wouldn’t matter.Well it kinda did.Its definitly watchable though.
Film vetran Sam Raimi returns to the beloved horror genre. With this instant classic that is produced by Ghost House. This film was nominated in almost every catagory at the 2009 Scream Awards yet all it was able to receive was best horror movie. I am not usually one to take award shows seriously but this film was damn good. It scared the shit out of me, their was so much situational tension. What can be scarier then telling the truth and no one beleiving you. Telling the truth and you dont beleave what your saying either. This is the best gypsy curse movie since Thinner. The premise of this movie is simple. This movie gave me thrills and chills it had ghosts, demons, gypsy curses, animal sacrafices and one of the coolest catfights I have ever seen on screen. This movies cinematography was off the hook. But their were a couple of plot holes. Like how does some ones funeral come together on less then a days notice. Also let it be said that this films leading lady Alison Lohman is absolutely gorgeous. She has that freindly good girl next door vibe to her. Seeing Justin Longs Reaction to loseing best supporting actor at the Scream Awards 2009 was priceless
This was a very entertaining film. Sam Raimi is back to his true form. A very campy supernatural thriller/comedy. The fight scene in the car is classic and worth the watch for it alone. But the film was too predictable but good old fun.
Unbelievably silly, with no real scares, but some gross-out scenes. At one point I was sure she was being haunted by Wile E. Coyote. A waste of time and 5 bucks at the video store. Pass on this one.
I personally hated this movie, I hate CGI and it used too much, I just truly diliked this movie. Give me another evil dead instead
It ws pretty good
Are you kidding me? If I had seen this at the theaters I’d have demanded my money back. I just watched the unrated version and am still trying to figure out what dragged it beyond PG-13. Raimi rehashes every effect he used in the Evil Dead films – quick pan, crazy sounds, voice effects (“Dead by Dawn!” anyone?), curtains moving – and all for what? One big waste of time. If this is Raimi returning to form, it must be for all of those who drooled over Spiderman and have never seen the Evil Dead 1 or 2. Little bursts of 13 year old (non) scares, interspersed by long stretches of nothing only to end with one of the most predictable finishes I’ve seen in just about forever. What a HORRIBLE piece of film making!
This is a really funny, gross, somewhat scary movie. I really enjoyed it, and will definitely see it again.
S.
A few cheap scares is really all you get in the “horror” department, but the gross out gags, acting, and characters could not have been better or more fun! People say they can’t believe how anyone can like this movie, but I say how can anyone NOT? Definitely one of the most entertaining movies this year. It’s true you can see the ending “twist” coming a mile away, but who cares? The ride getting there was a blast!
In the year 2009 Sam Raimi has returned to horror with Drag Me to Hell but would it be worth the wait. How would Raimi’s slapstick, creepy, bloody “B” movie style fit in with the remake plague public, would they accept something that’s not remade, rebooted, repackaged or regurgitated. Also, how would the die-heart fans react to a new horror film from Raimi, under a rated PG-13 tag? Let’s see how well we can get answers to some of these questions.
The story is fairly simple, lead character Christine (Alison Lohman),a loan officer, denies an old woman for a third extension for her house mortgage, mostly because Lohman wants to impress her boss and be promoted to assistant manager. The elderly woman happened to be an evil gypsy who puts a curse on Lohman, making her life a living nightmare. For the rest of the film we follow Lohman as she tries to rid the curse away from her life once and for all.
For me, one of the biggest issue with Drag Me to Hell was the lack of tension. I can’t understand why horror movies of this decade have the same error, take away Haute Tension (2003) and I’ll be here for a week trying to come up with another film. Raimi would set-up a tense moment then with a blink of an eye it’s on to a new scene almost dismissing the impact of the previous scene. Not only does this become a tension killer, but after awhile it grows into a somewhat boring experience for the audience. I also can’t ignore the PG-13 rating because it DOES hurt the movie. When the fun starts to pick up, it can only go so far giving the impression that the makers are working with a safety net.
End result, Sam Raimi didn’t fully embrace his roots. The film was too polish, too neat and yes at times too damn predicable. I’ll give him points for some cool moments such as, the fly scene, the parking lot showdown, bleeding of the nose and for at least trying to go for a haunted atmosphere. It’s also nice to get an original score from Christopher Young instead of the usual trendy play-list from an I-Pod.
6/10, Drag Me to Hell needed colorful gore with a pedal to metal mentality, from the start to the end. Rather than giving the public a neat, safe, slow moving horror movie. Cute but far from classic.
Its about time Same Raimi returned to the horror genre. Just so you know i watched the unrated verizon. I disagree with the review below me as I dont think Raimi had to embrace his roots to make a horror movie as it has been almost 20 years since his last horror movie and if he had to embrace his roots I think the movie would have been even more predictable. What we get is a Sam Raimi movie on a big budget, so of course its going to be more mainstream but you can still tell its a Raimi film
Spoiler
If you have read or seen King’s “Thinner” you have seen “Drag Me To Hell”. How can someone copy a movie so completely and still try to pass it off as their own? Really disapointed with this effort.
Not a Classic but deff. great movie for being PG13. the ending you see coming a mile away, though. a must see, at least once.
What a cracking horror film that proves you DON’T need blood/guts n gore by the bucketload to make a good film.
Classic Sam Raimi film with more than a hint of the Evil Dead movies with some of the camera work, effects and creepy voices. And likeable main characters as well
I’ve always like Justin Long he was great in Jeepers Creepers and make a great male lead!
Don’t leave it so long next time Sam!
Horrible. Flat out horrible. I really expected more from this movie. I gave up half way though.
The acting is horrible, the “gore” isn’t gore at all its sheer disgusting. I can handle blood, gore and guts, this was just raunchy.
The story line is well….just doesn’t exist. The reason that the girl is cursed is just lame.
Don’t get me started on the special effects.
Okay wait..the special effects are special in the same way as your mommy and daddy also are brother and sister kind of special.
Animal lovers be warned needles animal murder in this movie.
In my humble opinion this movie should be drug to hell and never seen on earth again.
Was VERY dissapointed when I watched this film, mainly because it was so hyped up. Don’t get me wrong, its visually stunning and its had a lot of money thrown at it, but it still doesnt float my boat. Bad plot and below average acting – Such a shame!
All that I can say is…Sam, don’t so this to your fans again!!!
This movie was a waste of time, money and effort (on both our sides).
Anyone want my copy of Drag Me TO Hell…played only once…and will never see the light of day again as far as I am concerned.
Come on, what’s not to like? Anyone that liked Evil Dead2 and especially Army of Darkness should enjoy this film. Personally I enjoyed it more than either of those two. This is just really good old fashioned horror fun. We know how it will end, but Raimi is such a great story teller that I didn’t care. The “Saw” crowd will most likey simply not understand why this is a really good movie.
What a disappointment. After watching this i fear what the remake/sequel of Evil Dead will be like.
very entertaining
I saw Drag Me To Hell at the local dollar theater a few months back, anticipating it to be Sam Raimi’s return to the genre he owes his career to. It turned out to be his mutilation of said genre. To this day, I regret not spending that dollar on an 89 cent burrito at Taco Bell.
The movie is overwhelmed by bad acting and lackluster special effects that try to disturb and disgust, but end up leaving you thinking “what the hell was that?!” The plot itself isn’t all that bad, but it wasn’t enough to save this movie from being a complete time-vampire. The story is focused around a young woman who works at a bank, and has to deny an old lady an extension on her house payment. The elderly woman continues to pester her, saying “You shame me!”, and later attacks her in her car, and rips a button off of her jacket. She then curses the button, sending the viewer into a dull, over-the-top spiral of uncertainty. The rest of the movie is simply not entertaining. One has to wonder if Sam Raimi’s plans to continue the Evil Dead series is going to be a waste of his time and ours.
Do yourself a favor. If you want to see a movie about demons and curses, try Ghoulies. If you want to be left in jaw-dropping awe at how bad a movie can be, go ahead and see Drag Me To Hell. The camera work is also terrible, leading me to believe that I was watching a made-for-TV movie.
I can’t fathom what posessed me to see this movie in the theater. That 89 cent burrito sure sounds good right now.
I went into seeing this film with high intentions and I was not disappointed. Drag me to Hell is the kind of horror film that doesn’t take itself seriously at all. Much like the Evil Dead franchise. The entire film kept me engaged for all the different aspects of it.
I don’t know how else to describe this film but as an epic roller coaster ride. Everything in it was overdone, the plot is hilariously lame and the characters often seem a bit stiff or cliched.
But it’s done in a way like its a parody of 80′s B-Movie horror cinema. At times this is the most hilarious film ever and at other times you genuinely get a shock from one of the many jumps that happen in the film. A lot of the time you feel suspense as well and there are many moments that are just put in to gross you out.
So it’s still a classic horror film, but don’t be expecting anything really creepy that will haunt you even after the film has finished like in Ring, The Exorcist, The Orphanage, The Silence of the Lambs, Halloween or Suspiria.
Unfortunately this was grossly overlooked in the theaters. It’s Raimi doing his Evil Dead style of horror and gross-out comedy with less gore. Don’t skip over this one. It’s one of the very few worthwhile horror comedies to come out in the past decade.
This movie was awesomely bizarre, scary, and funny at the same time. There are a couple really cool and gross “WTF” moments. I’m so glad Sam Raimi decided to make another movie in this genre. I wish it reached a bigger audience so it could be truly appreciated. Its not perfect, it has a couple goofy moments (unintentional goofy moments) like the corny floating effect during the sayonce at the end of the film.
Overall it was highly enjoyable and a welcome edition to my collection. Check this one out for sure.
What a great return to form for Sam Raimi. After the awful Spiderman movies he’s back to what he does best. This is practically Evil Dead 4 with no Ash and less gore. There are still plenty of gross out moments in this movie with Raimi kinda going for body/mouth horror as poor Alison Loman spews blood, coughs up flies, has maggots spewed all over her and is thrown all over the place, just like the way Ash was attacked in that cabin in the woods. The story is simple enough but the way it’s told is a lot of fun. This is a cinemtatic ghost train ride. It’s fast, a bit cheesy but a riot from start to finish. The entire cast does a good job but ultimately, this is Raimis show and here he is displaying the wild filmmaking techniques that put him on the map. He should leave that Spider guy alone and keep doing what he does best. Horror.
I was absolutely looking forward to seeing this movie. now I wish I could get my 99 minutes back. sadly, I never will.
DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE.
It was boring at most parts. predictable at every part. and to sum it up, it friggin’ sucked!
How in the hell did it get a 7.3….well I know why, but seriously this movie was cheesy, boring, had no gore and the lead actress could not act and it was very predictable. Should of went straight to DVD, Trick r Treat was way better. I guess people pretended to like this movie because it was directed by Sam Riami…bahh
I have held off renting this movie because of it
being pg-13 so maybe later down the line I’ll have a change of heart. I’ve also heard mixed
reviews about this movie as well so I’m also
confused.
I don’t know what all the hype was about with this movie. It is not scary whatsoever, is completely generic, and the end is LAME!!!!!!!!!!!
It was pretty boring to me. I laughed at most of the movie. It all looked so fake if u ask me. I wouldn’t recomend watching it unless, u are one of those people who are afraid of the grudge. But then you’d be really afraid of it.
It wasn’t bad, just too many throw up scenes, too short and a predictable ending. Should have had a better ending.
The ending was a doozy lol, I laughed my head off shouting out “NOOOOOOOO!”
Okay, I can understand there’s a lovefest for Sam Raimi. Evil Dead 2 is quite possibly the most over-the-top fun horror film ever made. But come on, would anybody be praising this film if another name was attached to it?
It was okay and somewhat entertaining. The efforts to have a gross-out moment here and there come across as silly and unfortunately, the ending can be spotted from two miles away.
I like this one..
This film is true Horror Masterpice and is perfect for all Horror fans alike while having Humour, Scares, thrills, creepy & errie scenc also having deep drak spooky and a terffic cast with great acting and CGI effects Sam Raimi is amzing he being horror too lives one of the best horror of the decade that I have seen I gave me nightmare soo it must be good, also best scariest movie in cinmeaicat history with a culture story plot that is aswome from start to finish Lv It!!!
Drag Me to Hell
12/12/2009
Director Sam Raimi has directed such movies as Spider-Man 1, 2, & 3, A Simple Plan and Darkman returns to his horror roots in Drag Me to Hell. Raimi’s Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are two of the biggest cult horror movies ever made. They were both shot on extremely small budgets and launched his career and that of Bruce Campbell. Sam has a specific kind of horror that is half slap stick comedy and half ultra gore. The “dead” movies were made in the glorious golden ages of 1980′s horror films.
Drag Me to Hell is a very fun movie to watch that has everything the horror fan looks for, Super-natural curses, blood offerings and gypsies. The movies main characters are Christine and Clay, played by Alison Lohman (White Oleander & Flicka) and Justin Long (the Apple Computer guy). The story revolves mainly on Christine and her job as a loan officer yearning for the available assistant manager position. It’s between her and the new guy Stu Rubin. Enter the creepy looking Sylvia Ganush, an elderly woman who comes into the bank and begs Christine for another extension on her mortgage but Christine turns her down. That night in the parking lot Mrs. Ganush is waiting for her and they engage in an incredibly funny fight scene. Mrs. Ganush then puts a gypsy curse on Christine. She summons a demon known at the “Lamia”. The Lamia is known as the black goat and the eater of souls. Christine has three days to fight off and get rid of the curse before she is “dragged to hell”
Justin Long plays the boyfriend part well and adds his own brand of humor to the role. His parents are rich and don’t approve of his choice of Christine, who grew up on a farm and was quite the pudgy tomboy as a child. As the curse progresses, it starts to make Christine see and hear things that aren’t really there. They visit a fortune teller who feels the presence of the curse within Christine. He warns her of the danger and to be careful. Christine finally agrees to a fancy dinner at Clay parent’s mansion. This doesn’t end well as you might expect. The acting, directing, and such are all top rate. Everything you would expect from a Sam Raimi production. As mainstream Hollywood horror films go, it would be hard top.
Raimi plays around with classic ways of scaring the audience. Wind, shadows, and strange noises are played out well. Other than in a Looney Toons cartoon, where else would you see a good anvil gag? The several gross out scenes are purposely played for their comic effect rather than to outright scare you, which is a strong trademark of a Sam Raimi film. There is a twist ending that is pretty sweet and is set up in the first part of the movie. Raimi’s next film is scheduled to be “Warcraft” an adaptation of the super popular online computer game.
I must admit, I am usually skeptical of PG-13 horror films…but this was extremely entertaining from start to finish! It may not be the scariest film, but its just plain fun to watch. This is a must see.
I really enjoyed this movie. It had some really scary parts throughout as well as extremely funny parts. Don’t let the PG-13 rating fool you, this is a great movie.
I found this better than the Evil Dead films, mainly because I find Ash to be the most overrated horror icon ever.
Alison Lohmann is what made this watchable for me. I thought she would portray the typical bitch but no, and that’s the big surprise of the film.
The rest of it, I swear I’ve seen in dozens of movies.
Yeah There Gore And Jokes But Little Bit Overrated
Very cool movie minues the corny seanse scene towards the end. Evil Dead 3 now please!!
This is a great film not to be taken seriously! At times it can quite repulsive and over the top. I found myself lauhging at parts and I wasn’t sure if they were meant to be funny eg. When the goat talked. But it’s a fun film you can watch over and over again. It is daft but it’s meant to be daft
This film to me is a joke, the “horror” scenes are too long & are funny. The plot, especially the ending seemed to be rushed, to be honest it’s shit. If you like this pile of wank, then your just a faggot.
I love this movie! It’s great fun to watch and the ending was nuts! It’s not a super scary movie but it has some great gore scenes and it just over the top. Fantastic movie.
Loved this movie,Sam raimi is back too doing what he does best(evil dead trilogy)…….
classic Raimi not his best but still fun
‘Drag Me To Hell’ is a pleasure of a horror film for the simple reason that it is a straight-forward supernatural horror, devoid of distractions and absurdly contrived plot lines that can (and have) ruined many promising recent efforts in the horror genre. In this film, Lohman’s character is cursed by a gypsy, and will be dragged to Hell by a demon (the Lamia) in three days. It’s nice and uncomplicated, and who doesn’t love a good demon story. ‘DMTH’ is a tight, entertaining and at times horrifying film, that, while not groundbreaking, is a delighful return to a simple style of horror reminiscent of classics such as Raimi’s own ‘Evil Dead’.
Lohman’s performance as Christine Brown is wonderful and sympathetic, and she perfectly portrays a woman realising the unbelievable- that she is cursed and going to Hell (it helps that not only is Lohman a solid actor, but is also beautiful in a ‘real person’ way, not a Hollwood ‘my kneecaps are the only original part of me’ way). Raimi had originally wanted Lohman to play Christine in a much more unsympathetic light than Lohman eventually did, and I have to say I’m glad Lohman went with her instincts- granted, her character does a shitty thing- but does it really warrant being condemned to Hell for eternity? Long is out of type but well cast as Christine’s confused but ever supportive boyfriend, and Raver is wonderfully vile and terrifying as Sylvia.
There are also signs of Raimi’s off-beat sense of humour, which, unlike in, say, Army of Darkness, does not distract from the unfolding horror of Christine’s plight (*Disclaimer* That comment should not be interpreted as a slight against AoD, which I sincerely LOVE. I do however find the film occasionally more humourous than frightening). It also must be said that the film is fairly light on gore and blood (though heavy on ‘gross out’, look for the maggots scene, awesome!), but as with other good horror films, sometimes the real terror is in anticipation of what we don’t or can’t see.
To conclude, ‘DMTH’ is a truly fun, frightening 99 minutes that has restored my faith that, when the elements come together, great horror films are still being made.
All I can say… Boring! I kept watching in waiting for something intersting to happen, but it just went on and on. The only thing it had going for it was its money spent in decent enough places to help make up for it, it had some diretor and the humour. Way I see it this directorw suited for more comedy, he should friggin’ stay out of the horror entertainment and go else where.
ehh this movie was ok. not at all scary and kinda cheesy. the blood and slime looked really fake too. it was kinda fun but it wasnt all that great. not what people make it out to be.i love sam raimi but i didnt much care for this movie
Loved it.
Sorry to disagree with the majority here, but this movie was so bad that my wife, who HATES horror flicks, laughed throughout the whole movie. This was an overdone and entirely predictible film…what a snoozer!
An honestly fun movie. The acting and storyline aren’t exactly the best, but its still worth watching. Its packed with so much humor, that its hard to take it seriously as a horror film.
One of the most over rated movies I have ever seen. Were most of you guys on drugs when you saw this mess! It is not scary, cartoonist and filled with juvenile humor. If various bodily fuids secretions are your thing, then this is the movie for you!
Sam Raimi is back!!!
entertainin 2 say d least,,,,,havent laughd so much in a horror movie b4,,,,d actin is below par bt doesnt dampen d movie much,,,has sum pretty kool thrills wich will keep ya on d edge,,,,,SAM RAIMI sure does rock,,,,,
honestly, i was pretty disappointed.
I’ve never been a big fan of mixing horror with comedy. One genre usually dilutes the other, either the horror is lessened with the comedy or the comedy never hits its mark. Sam Rami is the only one that successfully pulls this off and does so once again with Drag Me to Hell. The fear scene’s are a plenty and the goat scene brings the laughs. I hope Rami keeps working on these types of films and stays away from movies with a guy in red tight suits (no more Spidey Sam you’re more creative than that.)
I must say I was Suprise in a Good way with this Film. I rented it after its inital Run at the Theaters and wasn’t expecting much, But being a Fan of Raimis “Excluding the Spiderman Films” Sorry…Decided to Give it a Shot. Im Glad I did, for a “Horomedy” it Delivered, Fast Paced, Likable Characters and Of course the “Gypsy” Lady Steals the Movie…To sum it up, It was “FUN”!!! Which I don’t see much of these Days with Most Movies! If you want to be entertained “Not so much Scared” But just simply lost for a hour or two in a Good Movie, than I highly Recommend this Film…Great Job Mr. Raimi, Original and Highly Entertaining, I would say “Wheres the Sequel” But some things are better left as a One Parter, why Spoil a Good thing!
Definitely a Sam Raimi flick, through and through, which is a good thing, with a couple o’ neat references to the Evil Dead movies. But where-oh-where was the Bruce Campbell cameo, dammit?!
This movie has everything. The best Horroromedy of the past 20 years. Sam Rami has gone back to his evil dead routes and about time too!! It’s scary, gross and incredibly tongue in cheek. The story is fantastic yet simplistic and very well paced. The pre credit sequence sets the mood of the film as you snuggle down for the roller coaster ride which is to follow. The lead character is sweet and believable. The car lot sequence is superbly directed, tense and in places very funny. As is the dinner party scene with her Beau’s parents.
I highly recommend Drag Me To Hell and award it 10/10 Well done again Mr Raimi
Welcome back, true horror.
Oh, how I’ve missed you.
I really didn’t enjoy this film! I think it may have been because of the leading lady…. her acting really annoyed me. The trailer showed all the slightly scary bits and all that was left was B-grade horror-comedy. It’s not scary at all it really just annoys you to the final moment and then you sigh with relief when the credits roll. My whole family walked out of this one like WTF was that for real? Don’t make my mistake! Dodge this bullet!
HAHAHAH! really?! this was horrible. was it supposed to be funny? or was it just so laughably bad? this movie is the reason why i don’t have high expectations for many movies anymore.
Although i am still expecting Evil Dead 4 this film was top notch. I got this for my birthday. It cost
i thought the ability of this movie to have a storyline perpetually move on and increasingly scare the audience at the same time is a unique feature…The only problem i have with this movie would be the overuse of special effects. a problem that Raimi has always had!!!
Simply one of the greatest horror movies in an incredibly long time.
Refreshing, funny, and most importantly, scary.
Definitely worth a watch/purchase!!!
you like Evil Dead you will like the humor and blood of Drag… Solid
bad.bad
When I saw this movie In the theater I didn’t know what to expect. But right when I left the theater, I just had a huge smile on my face. I loved this movie, just mainly for the character development with the main girl Christine Brown. I loved her character! Her situation was just creepy. But the ending, won’t It but It just made the movie a whole lot better. This movie does have some corny and cheesy parts but that’s the kind of horror director Sam Raimi Is and I respect that. The movie was very well done.
I don’t understand how people find this movie scary, it’s just another teen horror that was over hyped and ended up being truly shit.
I dont feel like this was suppose to me a scary horror film. I was not afraid. But i sure was entertained. I laughed, i jumped, i was grossed out. It was a thrill ride from start to finish. I had to pee and i refused to leave. The story was fast paced. I felt for the characters and even though the ending was expected….with the envelope…i still loved the film from start to finsih.
i thought it was a great film. one of the most original movie to come out in years. sam raimi sure does know how to make a horror movie. now evil dead 4?
Hated it. Over 90% on RT? Are you kidding me?! No suspense, real cheesy, Lohman can’t act, terribly boring…I found it to be overrated because it wasn’t good.
This is an excellent movie period. Not simply an excellent horror film, but an excellent overall film. I took a friend with me to see it who hates horror movies (squeals and cowers the whole time) and they absolutely loved it (in between the squealing and cowering). Scary, comedic, dramatic, compelling. Perfection.
Defintely, that black humor Raimi is accustomed, and talk about a horror movie that is unafraid to be cheesy, much like the classics, but done in a great way. A classic.
I loved it. It was funny as hell and the acting was good. The effects were good and so was the story. great overall
When I first saw an ad for this movie i thought, Why the hell would they make a PG-13 horror movie, the makers are just putting out the movie isnt sary and its gonna suck… that was not the case, good job movie people
I swear, one of the most over-rated movies of 2009. I went in expecting something amazing, but it was just extremely disappointing, with a climax that seemed more suited for a comedy. I’ll just stick with Evil Dead.
An original horror movie that lays on the perfect amount of cheese you’d expect from Raimi.Great plot, perfect overacting, cool atmosphere, and just plain fun.Great flick.
I Thought This Was An Original. ABSOLUTLEY Awesome. Loved Everthign About It!
saw the midnight showing of this when it came out and loved it. bought the dvd the day it came out and loved. watched it today months after it came to dvd and guess what…. loved it!
sam raimi is so badass i just wish he’d visit this territory a little more ofter and leave those big budget pieces of shit he does behind, he’s too classy for that
This movie sucked!! It was not scary! I don’t see why people are loving this movie so much! It should be called a comedy instead of a horror movie! It was the biggest waste of money ever! Sam Raimi, I loved the Evil Dead series, but this was ridiculous! You cannot have a movie about Hell rated PG-13! Every scare was so predictable! This had so much potential and it turned out to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen!
This movie seems to be overrated and Im not sure why people are so crazy about it. I imagine the people who liked this are the same who enjoyed Undead. Horror comedys… meh…
good movie!!! twisted ending:), i love it
, good acting, good story and good kills like when grandma dies:)
Me and my friends went to see the horror movie “Drag Me To Hell” and it was the dumbest movie I have ever seen since the “Haunting Of Molly Hartley” It was really cheesy not even funny even though it tried so hard to be funny with it’s slap stick comedy. It was more of a punch in the crouch. The acting was so bad it was like nails on a chalk board. I do not recommend this movie at all, I kinda want my money back cause I was very disappointed in it. It was so awful. The movie is about a loan officer named Christine Brown who had to evict an old lady from her home since she already had 5 loans from that bank and couldn’t pay it off. The old lady decides to get back at Christine by following her out to her car creepy stalker style. She then tries to beat her up and that was interesting to say the least.
So after about a minute and a half of them fighting in Christine’s car the creepy old lady Set’s a curse on her and for the next 3 days she has to figure out a way to get out of this mess so she doesn’t end up going to hell. What can I say, Karma’s a bitch
I swear I felt like I was in hell while watching this movie it was that bad. I like the whole concept of the movie, a girl trying to save her soul from damnation, other then that no thank you. So if you want to waste about a hour and a half to however long this movie was then by golly go right ahead cause if you’re not into this type of movie then you’re going to regret ever renting it.
I give this movie 2 out of 5 Skulls.
I went into this movie expecting it to be scary and spent most of my time drifting in and out of sleep.
What a perfect concept just f’n ruind…honestly.
This was one of the biggest dissapoints in my life of watching horror movies…this thing doesn’t even deserve a skull in my opinion.
0/5 skulls is what I would give if I could…sucked big donkey bawls.
it was an ok movie they could made it scarier so it can it’s name
Very good. Creepy and filled with jumps and scares.
I thought this was one really fun rollercoaster of a ride horror movie. I was laughing and screaming at the same time. I walked away feeling like I had seen a decent movie…very satisfied.
So DRAG ME TO HELL was a really wild ride. Is it an amazing film? True, it does not reach the dramatic heights of say, this years Star Trek. However, in its defense it doesn’t shoot for the stars. It doesn’t even go for the moon. It goes for the jugular and never let’s go. Sam Raimi, who’s made a living off of spider man films, got his start in low rent horror with the Evil Dead franchise. If you have experienced those films, you won’t need to read this review, because you’re already in line to see it. If you haven’t, you’re a lesser person for it. He returns to his roots here, and proves he still knows how to control audience’s emotions when in regards to fear and laughs.
A loans officer at a bank is vying for an assistant manager position and in order to get it must make the “hard decisions.” In comes a creepy and deliciously over the top Gypsy. Yes, as in the hunchback of Notre dame, the wolf man, or, um, Stephen kings “thinner.” the poor gypsy named Mrs. Ganush is pretty upset about the fact that she can’t stay in her house anymore, and obviously our pool little loans officer must pay…With her soul. That is literally all the set up or plot that there is. And frankly that takes up a lot more time that could have been spent on the horrors our heroin must endure for three days before, as is legend, she will be dragged to hell, by the curse the gypsy puts on her.
This movie is concerned with two simple things. to make you jump out of your seat, and to make you laugh. There is not one moment wasted on anything other than one of those things. An early parking lot brawl starts off creepy, goes to full blown scary, then suddenly turns into a loony tunes cartoon (wait for the staple to the eye!!) And that one scene properly sets up the entire film. Every sequence starts with suspense, goes for the cheap shock, and then delves into sick dark humor.
No lie, there is a scene involving haunted pots and pans that I jumped out of my seat at, then could not stop laughing at. It was so much fun. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the film goes for broke, throwing everything at you including the kitchen sink. Well, they leave that one item out, but a handkerchief has never been so menacing. Oh, and did I tell you there was a talking goat? There is. And a séance scene that just keeps topping itself with more ludicrous poltergeist shenanigans (was that possessed man dancing in mid air?) OH, and how could I forget the death by anvil! That’s right, an anvil, tied to a rope, tied to a pulley, with anvil looming overhead, and a pair of ice skates present to save the day. It’s like a live action road runner cartoon, with a lot more goo.
The film is only pg-13 and deserves the rating. However, there is a LOT of phlegm, snot, ooz, bugs, and vomit thrown around. I was more grossed out than I was during some other R rated gore moments. The difference here is it’s all in fun. The move doesn’t dwell on depravity; it delights in grossing us out, or making us jump. It makes scary movies fun again. I can not recommend this thing enough. It’s the best thing to see with a large group of people, and hear everyone squeal and squirm at every turn. And it’s also reassuring to hear them laughing just like you after the movie delivers yet another effective “gotcha” moment. If I had any complaints I’d say it’s not long enough. I could have put up with another 30 minutes of this sucker. Also, Alison Lohman looks and sounds as though she’s 12. I know she’s actually in her 20′s, but a loan officer? I feel she should be asking me to drive her to the prom. The Mac guy is also in it as her caring boyfriend. But it’s Allison’s show, and she’s in almost every scene taking one hell of a beating. It’s the kind of movie you walk out and argue with your friends about which scene was better. For me it was the fate of the kitten sequence. I wont spoil it, but lets just say that a film that off’s a 7 year old before the opening titles is obviously not playing by the rules. And Raimi has so much fun breaking them all. I had a blast with this film, and will be seeing it again.
This is Sam Raimi’s best fright flick yet! C’mon get off of the Evil Dead shit already. Evil Dead is my favorite horror film, but Sam Raimi’s got more to share with us.
“Drag Me To Hell” is fun, sick, twisted, entertaining, blah blahblah.
Don’t let the PG-13 dissuade you from seeing this. It’s not a gore-fest or anything. The character don’t say “fuck” every five minutes either. It’s solid and one ov my new faves.
I greatly enjoyed this move. Everything from the gross-out moments to the characterization was wonderful and detailed. With a great mix of pop-out scares and in your face terror it has a strong balance of horror feng shui if you will, and even if you see the ending coming you’ll still have your breath taken away.
I will say that the effects seemed a bit cartoony at parts, and if you love cats you may want to avoid this film. But other than that I’d highly recommend this film. One of the better horror movies I’ve seen in recent years.
I would have liked this movie if he did a serious version. I understand that it was meant to be horror comedy. I like the use of Gypsies and such. Some of it was clever, but overall I thought it was stupid. I really wanted to like this movie.
i agree with what some of these reviews say about this movie not being scary. The scares in this movie werent great but they poked great fun. Being horror-comedy, i thought it was funny at time and (tried to be suspenseful) at other times. However, the subject by which Mr. Raimi talks about frightens me. The thought of being posessed/marked by the devil or being sentenced to an eternity in hell has always frightened me. This is the main reason i give this movie a 10 stars. The scares didnt “scare” but the theme did. I finished watching this movie and i had an emormous pain in my gut because it actually disturbed me. It struck a nerve when she saw the button and realized any second she would be dead and dragged to hell for an enternity of torment and pain. That, even though she knew, she couldnt save herself and that the demon always claims what it wants. This feeling in my stomach lasted for several days which is why this gets a 10. For the ability to leave a lasting impression on me. BTW, funniest part of the movie…the demon goaat screaming “YOU BIIIIITTTTTTCCCCHHHHH!!!!”
First off, can I just say who the heck doesn’t check the envelope to make sure the button’s in it?! I knew that would cause a problem.
I actually really enjoyed this movie, even if it’s humor threw me off. I like my blood spewing out of my nose to look more realistic, less CGI. The ending, I wish she hadn’t been dumb. The grave part was cool. The whole movie was cool. I highly suggest it.
WOW Idk if I watched the same movie as Mr. Disgusting, or half of these reviewers, but I couldn’t disagree more… there were no scares, there was no suspense, effects were less than amazing, the story and acting was eh, the humor in it was less than good enough to make me chuckle out loud… the best scene was the car fight towards the beginning, huge slide down from there…
I’m glad I rented it from the library and didn’t pay a thing for it…
I’m SO sick of all of these glowing reviews about this movie. Drag Me To Hell is horrible, I hate the acting, the whole movie was very laughable, and the seance topped it all off to make it a very bad movie. I really don’t know what else to say, please try and not to watch this with high expectations people, you will be disappointed.
Sam Raimi still got it
Drag me to Hell is a pretty nice movie with an interesting plot good actors and all the special effects are absolutely frightening
kay, this movie definitely sucked major ass. come on, what movie did you guys watch ? ’cause the movie i saw had terrible acting, terrible graphics, and an even worse plot. i usually agree w/ the BD review. but not this time. i sat there bored & disappointed, waiting for this shit to end.
A solid return to horror for Sam Raimi, I especially enjoyed his homage to Evil Dead in the seance sequence.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED….GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS BLENDED WITH A SLIGHT SENSE OF HUMOR! If you’re a fan of Sam Raimi or the Evil Dead franchise, then you should definitely like this movie. Alison Lohman carries her part well, despite being partnered up with the always annoying Mac guy Justin Long, and the tough old gypsy witch is pretty entertaining to watch. I enjoyed the end…that’s kinda what she gets for confusing the weight of a quarter for the weight of a coat button! Duh! Overall, a very good movie with some blood, some exploding eyeballs, and some twisted humor!
Lame acting, good humor(the old lady gums Christina) and a fair amount of blood. Not worth all the hype though.
Its like watered down classic Raimi.
waste of time. just because it’s raimi doesn’t mean the movie gonna be good, btw spiderman sucks too
It had a lot of unnecessary filler time in it,but other than that,it was a pretty good movie. There is still some hope for the raimi brothas.
So here’s what it boils down to: you’ll love this movie if you know who Sam Raimi is, and you’ll hate it if you don’t. Trust me, it matters. Also I feel like Justin Long was just told to act as cold and one sided as possible, but it was still awesome and pretty funny. Way better than I expected it to be.
I really liked this one. Yes it’s silly, but it’s not supposed to be taken 100% seriously, it’s supposed to be a fun horror film to watch like Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2. Good film that is quite entertaining.
I liked this movie, The horror scenes were excellent and Sam Raimi did an excellent job with this film!
This movie scared the hell out of me for a PG-13 but I enjoyed it, Very well done.
Great film, but a horrible ending.
While it’s been a while, it’s good to have you back, Sam Raimi. How long ago was it when you first made “The Evil Dead”. It’s been a while: lets’ just put it at that.
“Drag Me to Hell” is Raimi back to his horror-comedy roots, delivering as one would expect- an equal amount of camp and scares. There are big laughs- very big laughs- as well as some clever “gotcha” jump moments. But what makes “Drag Me to Hell” so special is that with every scare, there is a laugh. So essentially, the thing will have you laughing yourself silly, and that alone is respectable. But throw in a fast-moving plot involving a demon “black goat”, and you’ve got me hooked; especially when the demonic goat inhabits a real goat, possesses it, and makes it talk, bite, and even swear; all while putting good use to deliciously campy animatronic effects.
I admire “Drag Me to Hell” for the good time that it promises and delivers upon. From the memorable, creepy opening credits all the way to the hilarious finale, this is good-natured, cheesy fun. It’s proof that PG-13 horror CAN be good; but it’s not always a step towards the “good” anyways. But yet, this film gets the job done without much gore, blood, or disgust. It is truly scary, freaky, and even quite funny. I laughed, I jumped, and hell, I loved the movie. It’s a win for me. And it should be for you too.
I just couldn’t get into this one. The movie never really dragged me into it, and for the largest part of the movie I kept waiting for “PC” to come walking in and ask about viruses.
I’m really surprised with most of the ratings that have received this film. It is terrible, bad, stupid, exaggerated to the fullest in all aspects, more than a horror movie looks like a comedy, bad performances, bad effects and a final.. well according to what was the rest of the movie, terrible.
Full of unnecessary low punches. A real insult to those who love good horror / terror.
I am a big Sam Raimi fan, so when I heard he was involved with another horror film, I was totally psyched. I…was not prepared for this. I admit, I’m easily frightened, but nothing compared to this. Granted, there were some laughable moments where the gore was overdone, but that’s just part of Raimi’s style. But this movie, I was so freaked out I picked up a bat halfway through and wouldn’t put it down until it was over. Then, still freaked out after, I took the movie, at two in the morning, to the nearest dumpster and tossed it in, refusing to keep it in the same room with me. Yep. Never watching this again.
Honestly, I was not impressed with this movie. I understand and respect the popularity this movie has received from the reviewers, however, this movie just did not grab my interest.
The acting was mediocre at best. There was no real suspense, or even intense scenes to give me a scare. Contrary, I found myself laughing at many scenes, and I am willing to forgive and forget if I expect humor in such a horror movie. Yet, I didn’t, nor wanted humor to show itself in this movie.
Wasn’t convincing, and I feel like I spent more time than needed on this review.
i LOVE this film! it almost has that cheesy horror feel too it and the twist at the end is pretty out of the blue too! one of the best films i had seen in a while!
Awesome movie. It’s gross, it’s scary, it’s intense. It made the 6 year old in the room very uncomftorable hahaha.
The only part that I didn’t like was the Séance scene, which I thought was extremely goofy and took away from the darkness of the film. – 1/2 skull for that and the fact that I didn’t see Bruce Campbell anywhere haha.
Hobo Approved(TM)
Fun but pretty bad movie with some horrendous cgi efx..
It rather amuses me how much people take this film seriously. It isn’t supposed to be a chilling, edge-of-your-seat suspence horror, but a fun, gory, splattery comedy-horror. The first time I watched this film it didn’t do that much for me. But every time I watch it, it grows on me more, so that I have now realized that it is true genius. It puts on a front of being a serious film, but by the end, you realized it was very hilarious. This film will make you jump, laugh and cring, and it always gives me a lift. The ending is excellent – unpredictable, hilarious, and just full of Raimi juiciness. Definitely one I could recommend to any horror fan. Top rating from me.
Ohhh yeahhhh!
Good to see this in 2009!
Just when your thinking Sam Raimi is to good for the genre that made his career he comes back swinging with something that is just as good as Evil Dead in my opinion the only thing I would of wanted is for a cameo from the legendary Bruce Campbell apart from that I consider this film pretty much perfect.
Love the whole demon possession thing the over the top gross out scenes and the never ending mental/emotional torture that leaves the main character physically exhausted to the point where you just have to realise maybe you are just Fu**ed.
Made me appreiciate how much of a great director and story teller sam raimi actually is, the narrative worked so smoothly Horror to Raimi is like riding a bike..
It has some very creepy elements, and the movie had promise…
But in the end it was a joke. Some parts were just so laughable while others were pretty good.
Overall, a big disappointment.
Great movie!!! Scary, Gross, & a lot of Fun all at once. This is what a real horror movie should feel like!!!
Great movie!!! Scary, Gross, & a lot of Fun all at once. This is what a real horror movie should feel like!!!
This movie was really good, which I wasn’t expecting.
Quirky, spontaneous, unnerving. It’s all good. For its 99 minutes, if Drag Me to Hell doesn’t send you into tears laughing, it will when it scares you at the next turn. If you can bare with its lagging buildup and a debatable ending, you’ll have a good time.
This is how horror movies should be. Its 100% scary, slimy, FUN! Sam Raimi has created another masterpiece. Get ready to say “EW” cause Sam had a fun time filling the movie with slim. Their is no real gore but plenty of slim and goo. Proving you don’t need blood and gore to make an amazing, entertaining horror film. Its just pure FUN! Best PG-13 horror movie ever!

FUCK YES!!! so goddamn disgusting, so fucking awesome!
