I loved this movie. This is Scorsese channeling Alfred Hitchcock and succeeding on all levels. You really can’t go into the plot without giving anything away as there are so many twists, turns and red herrings. If you pay close attention you can work out the movie within 20 minutes as there are so many clues presented so watch closely.
Like Hitchcock, Scorsese leads the audience up the garden path then pulls the rug out from underneath you, several times. What makes this movie so fun is watching a master director hold his cards so close to his chest then revealing his trick, only to immediately set up another one.
The entire cast do a great job, De Caprio is unhinged and on edge but the standouts for me are Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Supporting roles which are crucial to the plot are played wonderfully by Jackie Earle Haley and Patricia Clarkson.
Shutter Island is movie filled with so much unease and the tone is gloomy from the first frame. The musical score is frightening, again recalling the films of Hitchcock, while the vision/dream/flashback sequences are beautiful yet horrifying all at the same time. The hospital is ominous, the island rain lashed and the skies always grey. This is a psychological thriller mixed with the best elements that the horror genre has to offer.
Shutter Island is Martin Scorsese firing on all cylinders. He has crafted a twisty tale that demands multiple viewings. The way he covers his tracks just proves how genius this director really is. Go see it but do not reveal anything to anyone. The jaw dropping moments really do come if you go into it not knowing a thing.

Holy Shit! this movie was fan-freaking-tastic! The acting, directing, and cinematography are all top notch. I just am blown away. Imagery is remarkable and it keeps a constant unnerving tone. Its just plain horrifying.

I have to say this movie has changed my mind about ‘reading the book before the movie comes out.’ Why? Because I was bored by the end of the film. Could I have seen it coming? Maybe..but I really envied the guy who kept saying ‘No way!’ over and over during the film. Actually, if I had a bucket of popcorn I might have thrown it at him. That being said, the movie was very good, well filmed with solid performances. Don’t believe the Critics – see it for yourself.

I really enjoyed this film. The plot was interesting with a wicked twist at the end that surprised me. I think that DiCaprio did a good job playing his role, particularly towards the end. I don’t know if I’d classify it as a horror film though, as it wasn’t scary or overly gory. Great stuff, anyway!

Predictable twist takes the fun out of the great, mysterious atmosphere the film builds up. Seriously, I had it figured out in the first 15-20 min. I will give the film that the twist was amazingly well-integrated into the story. It isn’t just a cheap move to make the film memorable. But I much more enjoyed following the two marshals uncovering what was happening rather than the bad turn the story took about 3/4 of the way into the film. The only other problem with the film is continuity. Actors will constantly change positions in different shots during conversations which completely takes you out of the film.

Again, the twist, to me, hinders the movie from becoming “amazing,” but it sure as hell isn’t bad!

shutter island ,…..more like shut eye island!
i went into the theatre thinking this would be of the usual high standard expected of scorssese (spell check?) in many ways it was, dark moody very martin scorssese. but, this film had absolutely nothing that stood out to me, apart from leo decaprinardo quality acting because he is excepctional actor. looked like a low budget film done with fancy filters by your average motley crew of suspense slightly horror film makers. i did like the story, but its not original and i kind of guessed the outcome at various points of the film. now i think about it, i really dont like scorcesse any more, he is a short half weasel half italian badger mafia muppet who sucks the kahonhas of italian wise guys in there shitty assehole moody spagetti restaruants while swearing like a fat old lady in a brothel. balls to this film, i squirmed all the way through it and was bored, my mate fell asleep and i thru popcorn at his stupid jewish head! then i felt sick.

Shutter Island is a gorgeous, atmospheric film; let there be no doubt about that. The film’s deficiencies aren’t due to lack of talent on the part of the filmmakers. Director Martin Scorsese manages to create some deeply affecting human moments in the midst of his hard-edged thriller, as well.

Those qualities just made the anti-climax of the big reveal an even bigger letdown than it would have been otherwise. I felt that it cheapened and degraded the emotional investment I’d put into the story and the characters. As far as technique is concerned, Shutter Island is a superbly crafted picture that’s clearly the product of highly skilled professionals. That’s also the major problem. Ultimately, Shutter Island is a triumph of craft over heart, a visually impressive but clinical exercise.

Set in 1954, Shutter Island chronicles the investigation of Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), U.S. marshals assigned to investigate the escape of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a patient of the island’s psychiatric institute for the criminally insane. It’s an event that has all of the hospital’s guards and staff on edge. Shutter Island houses the most dangerous individuals in the system, and Solando’s escape poses a threat to everyone at the hospital.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Shutter Island’s staff are remarkably disinclined to be helpful. The hospital’s chief physician, Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), while unfailingly polite, continually blocks the marshals access to resources and information that could prove invaluable, and his subtle condescension grates on Daniels from the moment they meet. The staff and patients they’re allowed to interview have all obviously been coached; no useful leads are forthcoming from them. They all seem to be anxious, too, and from something more than natural worry over Solando’s escape and the presence of the marshals.

Daniels is convinced that something’s very wrong on Shutter Island and confides in Aule that he’s researched the facility. Extensively. He’s heard about surgical experiments far beyond the ethical pale from sources that he finds credible. Now the challenge will be for the two of them to find proof of the monstrous activities taking place on Shutter Island and get back to the mainland.

Unfortunately, Cawley’s done his own research. He’s aware that Daniels knows of what’s happening on Shutter Island, but Daniels doesn’t understand how vital these experiments are. He’s not intellectually equipped to grasp how groundbreaking the work on Shutter Island is. He can’t be allowed to jeopardize everything that Daniels has labored so diligently to build.

Interspersed with the investigation storyline are flashbacks to Daniels’ service in Europe, where he was involved in the liberation of Dachau, a dream sequences where Daniels is reunited with his late wife Dolores (Michelle Williams), who died in a tragic apartment fire. They’re the most affecting scenes in the movie, beautifully filmed by Scorsese, who imbues them with the same haunting, surreal qualities of a nightmare that lingers with you long after you wake. They’re truly heart-wrenching, testaments to horrors that have left Daniels with a tremendous burden of pain and guilt. Maybe this investigation will give him the chance to find a degree of redemption.

The beauty of these scenes make the climax that much more of a letdown. I don’t object to films that challenge their viewers’ perceptions, I just don’t think that Scorsese played entirely fair with the manner in which he did it. The final scenes didn’t leave me with a feeling of astonishment or revelation, either – I found them to be interminably drawn out, making the last twenty minutes of Shutter Island an odious chore to slog through.

Shutter Island certainly doesn’t fall short due to incompetence. It’s a brilliantly acted movie and the caliber of technique you’ll see on display is likely to surpass that of most other movies you’ll see this year. I just didn’t find that all this talent was in the service of a story that was worthy of it. Scorsese and his gifted collaborators built a majestic, visually dazzling castle, but they made the fatal mistake of building it on sand.

Loved this movie. Scorsese has struck magic once again. This is by far my favorite performance by Dicaprio. The storyline is great and while yes the final resolution is seen before it should the journey truly is what makes this special. Jackie Earle Haley steals the show in his one scene. Ben Kingsley was great. This should definitely get some Oscar buzz going. I’m not sure if the release of the movie makes it ineligible for this year’s awards but if not this is surely up there with the frontrunners. This ranks up there as one of the top movies I have seen in months.

Was the wait worth it? Not really but what I wished would of been more of a horror movie with genuine scares and hard hitting fear turned out to be a dark and gritty psychological/drama and a devastating character study. Leonardo DiCaprio did an fantastic job in this film and I wont be surprised if he gets nominated for an oscar or actually win one come next year oscars because he definitely deserves one because he is one of the best actors in hollywood period! The cinematography was haunting and beautiful in this and set the perfect tone for a psychological experience and the music score was also above average though it was kind of overbearing for the movie it turned out to be. I was constantly using my head for this one and it was like a puzzle in a way but not as boring putting the peices together and I was always intrigued throughout, this one is a mindbender. The twist blew me away but disappointed me at the same time but it was heartbreaking in the end and it loses most of its horror, thriller, shock value and it turned into a complete drama and to me it could of been so much more than that. Overall it was a good watch but no way as good a Martin Scorsese’s past films but if this is his weakest the man is one talented guy. Wait for dvd for this one! More of a 2.5 out of 5 stars.

I liked this movie, but it definitely was not what I was expecting. Acting was great in the film. So much more emotional near the ending that I expected, it was…heartbreaking. The explanation was a little played out (you’d be like “hey I got the twist”, and it kept going, and going). Overall not really a horror movie, more thriller-esque drama. Still a fan though.

Very satisfying and a visual feast. I went because our B D reviewer described it as a tribute to Val Lewton and I would say he’s right on the money. Ben Kingsley shines in his psychiatrist role, gently sinister, but to pick one out of the amazing cast is unfair – well done all around. The period is captured perfectly, even the fake red of the blood has a fifties tone to it. Starts out well, drags a little in the middle as the puzzle gyrates and threatens to spin out of control, but then it’s all revealed to be ultimately logical with a satisfying and emotional conclusion. Trust Scorcese!

I saw this last night, and I still can’t really figure out what happened exactly. The ending, like others said, is a little predictable. But regardless, this is a good film.

The acting was great, despite a somewhat shaky script. DiCaprio is marvelous as usual and Kingsley does a great job with his character. The shifts between the Nazi Germany and asylum scenes are a kinda hard to follow, but only if you don’t pay attention.

Also is it just me or does this movie remind anyone of the cabinet of dr caligari? I’d recommend this movie to anyone and will go see it again in the theater.

Gave the film a 10 to get its skulls up! Because it deserves it! This film is SO engrossing that even though you know the ending half way through or maybe even before the ending, you still want to see how it comes about. Scorsese is easily one the best directors alive and with this film he proves he can create one hell of a psychological thriller. The music was a little over dramatic in the beginning, but in the scenes with DiCaprio and his wife, the violins are so frickin’ effective it gave me goosebumps. I loved it! The visuals of his dreams were very luscious and vivid. DiCaprio seriously gets better and better with each film he makes. Everyone with half a mind should go see this film! I’m so SICK of seeing people not like this movie because it was too predictable. It’s not the main twist that makes this movie great. It’s the way it’s unraveled to us and acted out. If you appreciate film and film noir you’ll appreciate this one as much as I did :)

This is supposed to be a psychological thriller and a good one it is. Personally, I find that it had too many flashbacks or nightmares to follow the story well but the acting by DiCaprio helped through out the entire film. It was a let down at the end because after all the fight and hoopla it turns out that this federal marshal was just having traumatic mental problems caused by the murder of his children and him murdering his wife.

Beautiully made and incredbly acted but this is more of a thrilling drama than a thriller horror film. It has all the trappings of horror film: the raging storm and lighting, the trance-like hallucinations, the dimly lit and grim asylum, the sketchy doctors and their Nazi-like experiments, but in the end, this is not a genre film for this website. It is a drama. And while its completely predictable from the get-go, it is still capitvating and interesting (if not riveting). It’s a highly polished “B” movie.

“Shutter Island” was a marvelously shot film and full of top notch acting performances. The atmosphere provided a sense of seclusion and desperation. The score, while being simple, providing a chilling over-tone as the story unraveled.

However, if during this movie you think you’ve figured out the ending within the first hour, then you think “Nah…that’s too easy!” You were right the first time. The story is nothing you haven’t seen before and makes that clear from the get-go. It left itself open to take different paths in the plot, but instead it stayed on the cooker-cutter path that it was set upon. I realize, the plot was taken right from the book, so therefore I can’t judge the movie based on that alone. Scorsese brought the chilling atmosphere to life in a beautifully shot and acted world. B-

Nice movie. Great atmosphere. Creepy looking hospital on an eerie island. Would love to go exploring in a place like that! Anyway, it’s not hard to figure this one out, especially if you’ve seen The Ninth Configuration with Stacey Keach, but the movie is very enjoyable. Leo does a good job, as does Ben Kingsley. It’s directed by Martin Scorsese, so the chances of it sucking are slim, just don’t expect anything too original.

While the ending was quite easy to work out I loved the journey that the story lead you on. The film had so many questions and motives involved and when each one was answered, well, it felt great. I enjoyed the acting, the creepiness, the setting and the random flashbacks. I wish there was just a little more focus on the insanity of the patients on Shutter Island though I understand that this was not necessary but I do love creepy, insane criminals! I liked the ending as well, though it was so easy to work out. What the mind can do to us all.

Well executed film but this story has been done to death. Its a shame that the trailer completely points out the obvious. That being said, the acting, direction and cinematography save this from being a complete waste of time. A solid thriller that is satisfies but don’t expect to be blown away.

This movie blew. First up this isn’t horror, this is a straight up dram thriller. Second if your a person like me who watches movies everyday since they were little. You’ll most likely figure out the plot in 5 mins. Somethings won’t come so fast some will. But this movie brought nothing new to the table. AT ALL. At least it wasn’t a remake. But this movie just could of been so much more. And failed. Want a great movie a movie that’s amazing and similar to theme like this Rent Jacob’s Ladder. That movie blows this piece of crap of the water. Still to this day that movie haunts me. And another thing that pissed me off about this movie. They kept on using the same score everytime there was tension. WTF did they run of money for a new score. It was pissing me off. Usally that never bothers me, but after hearing it in every scene. It gets annoying. Oh and one more thing the movie could of been easily made into a 1:40 something minute film and could of prob been better.

    now the pros.

Dicaprio gave a good performance along with ruffalo Dicaprio this wasn’t his greatest acting movie, I think Body Of Lies he was fuckin amazing in. Ruffalo did a pretty okay job. But the stealer of the show was Kingsley and a small role by jackie earle haley.

The cinematography was brilliant though I have to hand this film for that. Everything was set up so perfectly. And one scene that had dicaprios wife burning away (not a spoiler you see it in the trailer) was fantastic and almost brought a tear to my eye. ANd this was by far Scorseses better film since Taxi Driver.

So if you have nothing to do go and see this. Just don’t expect much. AT ALL.

Really, the only thing this movie has going for it, is that it was shot beautifully. Other than that, the whole pulling the rug out from under you with plot twists has been done a million times. Some are good, some are boring and predictable. This one is the latter. I predicted the ending to this movie about halfway thru. Way too long as well. Really really disappointing.

I wanted to love this so hard, I tried to like it, but for the first hour I was bored out of my mind. Admittedly, when it comes to Scorsese’s past work I haven’t loved everything, especially The Departed, which I failed to gain my interest. But I thought that a talented Director + an amazing cast + a genre that I love would equal an instant win for me. That was not the case.

Little things bothered me, like the accents that got on my nerves, the flashbacks and nightmares were bizarre, and the surprisingly bland dialogue. I spent the first hour waiting for the movie I expected to show its face but it wasn’t until the final thirty or so minutes that I got really interested.

Overall, Leo did a great job, as did Ben Kingsley, the environments are beautiful and sometimes very creepy, and the end is rather fantastic. Now that Scorsese has dipped his toes into the Suspense/Thriller genre hopefully he won’t do it again, because it just didn’t work in my opinion.

A few important things need to be understood about SHUTTER ISLAND. Number one, its not a “horror” movie. Its a psychological suspense film, a thriller with horror elements – much like the movies of the 1940′s. Also, its a given what the “twist” is. Its not a mystery, although Scorsese leaves it open for you to discover alongside DiCaprio’s character Teddy Daniels. Its the dismantling of a man. I think the film dropped the ball with the ending. More could have been made from it, perhaps leaving it open for the viewer to decide, is Teddy sane, and being told he’s crazy, and just going with it because he knows he cant get out of it – or is Teddy insane, and the ending is cut and dry. “Would you live as a monster,or die as a good man?” I think maybe Scorsese or the screenwriter was trying to toy with that idea, but failed to hammer it in. So to the masses who are complaining you figured out the twist in the first 15 minutes of the movie or sooner, you are missing the point. Its not a SAW movie. Its much deeper than that. I stand by my 9 out of ten. Although it was far from perfect, and not an out and out horror film, it was far and above the most intelligently made film Ive seen in a long time… the cinematography is outstanding and should win an Oscar, as should DiCaprio. For those who miss old time films, this is it. Only problem is, the MTV instant gratification twist society just doesnt know how to process it. I didnt either until I looked into who made the film and how they made it. The train wreck here is how the filmmakers just didnt get their professionalisms across to the average filmgoer.

This movie was alright. Definitely not ground-breaking by any means. I’m just a bit bored with the whole “American Mindf*ck” movies because they always have to SPELL-IT-OUT for you at the end. They don’t leave anything up to the viewer to figure out. They dont leave one puzzle piece out for interpretation.
American audiences are too dense and lazy to figure anything out for themselves. So, movies like this make me feel like the director is “dumbing it down” for me. To MAKE SURE I “get it all.” Its quite unnecessary, in my opinion.

But, then again, as the credits were rolling some dumb broad sitting behind me said to her friend “So, was he crazy or wasnt he?”
I guess some people STILL cant figure it out even when they solve it for you…..**sigh**

Sorry this movie is a self indulgent exercise in ego stroking, what a pile of kak, although visually interesting, nothing nobody else hasn’t done, the movie has little to redeem it’s extremely long duration. So many red herrings, so many twists, that you soon lose get lost and may find yourself wondering whether you left the oven on or what to have for dinner… there is no reward – Martin you have lost the plot! From the very beginning, the extremely ominous tone is set by this annoying and extremely loud soundtrack, sort of warning you … very loudly that this is BAD, BAD, BAD… I should have left then… there are so many horror movies on this site that run rings a round this over bloated, inflated, tiresome unedited waste of your hard earned dosh – I ca not believe it has an average user rating of 3.5, weird? A good story told efficiently and effectively is something Martin seems to have forgotten to do – he was good once – this is just sad.

First off, those of you who think you know the ending just by seeing the trailer, I’m just gonna tell you, you’re probably right. Lol. But, there is more to it than you think. That is all I’m gonna tell you about it. Anyway, this was a freakin awesome movie. The way Scorsese filmed it is different and really cool from a director’s point of view. The music in it is awesome, it’s not composed for the movie, Scorsese chose different pieces of orchestrated music to put into the move. The music in the very beginning when DeCaprio and Ruffalo are on the boat approaching the island and their drive up to the hospital is my favorite. Anyway, as you all know, based off of Dennis Lehane’s best selling novel, Shutter Island is about 2 “duly appointed Federal Marshals” who come to the island to investigate the disappearance of a patient at the hospital. The hospital is run by Dr. Cawley, played magnificently by Sir Ben Kingsley and he assures the 2 officers that the patient, Rachel, vanished into thin air. As their investigation continues, DeCaprio’s sanity starts to disintegrate bit by bit as he is haunted by images and dreams of war in WWII, a burning apartment, a scarred arsonist, a creepy little girl, and his dead wife, played brilliantly by Michelle Williams. As he gets closer and closer to uncovering the truth of Shutter Island, DeCaprio gets closer to losing his sanity and his life. Costarring Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Jackie Earle Haley, John Carroll Lynch, Ted Levine, and Elias Koteas, Shutter Island is a superbly crafted thriller, and certainly one of Scorsese’s best.

This isn’t a horror film, more of a mystery thriller but it’s a blooy good one at that! I absolutely loved it! It grabbed my attention from the very start and held it there until the very last frame! And what a twist. I never saw that coming, and it’s a twist with two different meanings, sp you can interpret it in which ever way you like. The acting was solid, the music was fantastic and original. It’s a fresh film. Definitely worth a watch kids!

A really good mystery-thriller from grandmaster Scorsese, but unfortunately no masterpiece.

Good things: brilliant cast, brilliant score, fantastic cinematography, wonderful colours, astonishing settings, amazingly dark atmosphere, highly intelligent script and cool dialogue.

Bad things: much too long, often pretty lengthy and boring, the plot is far too predictable.

You can guess the whole story and twist just from the trailer of the movie. Go see the movie knowing that already and you won’t leave the theater like a smug prick going “I figured out the ending 5 minutes into the film, I’m gonna give it 1 star.” The movie is shot well, acted well, and there isn’t any corny dialog. You know how the movie is gonna end, just forget about that and enjoy the ride through the film.

The Film Shutter Island gets you intrigued at the start of this thrill ride from hell. Martin has brought us another fantastic movie that is sure to be loved by all because i know i loved it by far one of the best fims i have seen so far this year next to Edge Of Darkness. This movie makes you think so if you look away for one second or even blink you are going to miss somthing very crucial or very important but it this case pretty much everything is important.
The way Martin can bring such outstanding performances from Leonardio DiCapro and Ben Kingsley and also a real shocker here we add Mark Rufflo in this film where we most of the time see him in Romantic Comedies but he has done some good mystery picks such as Zodiac and The Last Castle.
The Film circles around two federal marshalls Teddy Daniels (DiCapro) and his new found partner Chuck (Rufflo) they are going to a mentel instituition on Shutter Island where there has been a report of a missing Patient. And it is up to Teddy to find out where and how they escaped thats were we meet the dr. (Kingsley) who is prasied very highly buy his guards. Strang things are starting to happen as Teddy and Chucks stay at Shutter Island is becoming more and more suspicious buy every second.
Now that there is a huge hurricane of the coast of Shutter Island there is not way of escaping so they are trap and now with some of the paitens escaping Shutter Island we get more and more Detail in Teddy’s past life as to why he is so afraid of water and why that he is seeing Nightmeres or why he is having constant headaces.
If you think you know the ending to this movie then guess because you will totally be proven wrong considering the fact the ending if this movie was so unpredictable its not even funny this movie will definatly leave you thinking because it did for me and i am sure everyone at my screening left thinking the same way. This movie is probably one of the best films i have seen so far this year because i have not seen anything worthy of saying is remotely close to how thrilling suspenseful that Shutter Island is. It will be confusing at times but trust me in the end you will be glad you went and saw it.

A beautiful film, the setting was amazing to look at and upped the errienest of the film. The movie it self was so captivating, you felt like you were there investigating the island. The ending is something I will never forget and it is one of the best ending I ever saw, it screws your mind up and stays with you after the movie is over

As i’m sure you’ve already heard, this is a beautiful film. It pulls you in right from the start and never lets up. Some have said the ending feels rushed, but I disagree… there wasnt much else left to say. I think the ending was one of the best parts of the film. There are a few plotholes that you’ll have to overlook after the movie is over, but they are somewhat forgiveable. Dont pass this one up.

Shutter Island is a psychological mind boggler. Psychological terror at its best. The direction was spot on by Scorsese, the acting was superb, the score was amazing at times, and the twist was brilliant. All in All, Shutter Island is a psychological mind-fuck that shouldn’t go missed.

Although pretty entertaining movie. This movie was entirely too long. When the ending is quite obvious, you just want it to move along. Great setting for a movie and creepy at times. It just to bad that most of the good shots were once again used in the trailer. Nice to see DiCaprio pulling this off.

I can understand how some people didn’t like it, though. Some people don’t have the patience to sit through movies over an hour and a half but I will admit, the explanation at the end was a little too drawn out. I highly recommend this!

This has to be Scorsese’s worst movie. What happened? Did Scorsese have to kiss some studio ass? I thought he was teflon as far as getting the movie he wants, made. This is junk. This movie has been made a hundred times, and BETTER.
A similar, better movie: “A Beautiful Mind”. That’s how scary “Shutter Island” is.

I like how the biggest complaint on this movie has been “done before”… you can say that about almost everything these days. Almost nothing original comes out anymore. It doesn’t make something bad. This movie was great, and the acting on Dicaprio’s part (especially in the pond scene) was incredible. I thought this movie was an excellent example of an old classic film noir mystery thriller. I loved it.

I disagree with the BD Review I didn’t think the ending was predictable! I was very taken aback by it. And I was in AP Psychology for a year and I still didn’t see it coming! Hahaha but I loved the movie nonetheless, DiCaprio and Scorsese did it again. The soundtrack was awesome, very 50′s and dramatic. And I SWEAR the song at the very beginning of the movie when the title appears is the EXACT SAME song from The Shining. It has been killing me because no one else made that connection except me and I don’t know if I’m crazy or what! If you know if the songs are the same message me PLEASE! Anyway, awesome movie, awesome cast (Ruffalo was amazing as well!) and great story-line.

With a cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and Michelle Williams and the great Scorsese at the reins of directing, Shutter Island should have easily been another great film. It had the perfect formula for one but unfortunately, this isn’t so.

I’m not saying that I didn’t enjoy this film because I did. I just walked in with extremely high hopes and left feeling slighty unsatisfied. I did feel that it was very engaging and had a good deal of suspense but it was lacking something. I can’t quite put my figure on it but it just felt stale and a little predictable. On a positive note, the performances were fantastic and Scorsese was… well, he was Scorsese. He can’t really go wrong with anything he does and I think that may be a driving force behind all of the positive criticism and hype surrounding this film.
Like I said before, I did thoroughly enjoy Shutter Island but it wasn’t great, it was good.

Now, I can’t compare it to the book because I haven’t read it but I’ve been told that it didn’t live up to the expectations and I can easily see how this story would be much more effective in novel form. The suspense would set in slower and deeper and would give more extensive detail of events and I can only imagine that the imagery would be fantastic after seeing how well the imagery was portrayed in the film. Along with the performances, the imagery is definitely a strong and positive aspect of the work.

I hate to say this because I don’t want to come off as “that guy” who always says this but I honestly conceived a correct assumption of the ending from the trailer alone. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily because the ending is still powerful and effective and there were aspects that I did not see coming but I feel it could have been presented in a more efficient and less obvious manner (i.e. don’t hint greatly to the conclusion in the trailer). I will note that the last line of the film concluded the story extremely well and put a smirk on my face (“Is it better to live as a monster or die as a good man?”). See the film to understand the context.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Shutter Island but it’s not anything too special. Whenever I see a new film, I always walk away asking myself if I enjoyed it enough to purchase it and place it in my fairly hefty DVD collection. This is a quick way for me to see how much of an effect the film had on me. Shutter Island is not one I see being added to said collection but instead, has left me wanting to read the novel to get every little piece of the possible greatness. The film is definitely worth seeing but it’s not one that I would award over the top praise. Some have stated and I must agree that it does resemble a classic Hitchcock film in ways but it simply feels lackluster. I’ll leave you with a quote from reviewer Roger Moore, “It’s not bad, but as Scorsese, America’s greatest living filmmaker and film history buff should know, even Hitchcock came up short on occasion.”

Shutter Island boasts a terrific cast and a legendary director, shoot, the script isn’t half bad, but the direction? It’s standard crime fare. After a long delay and the impending hype, the effort wasn’t such a long-lasting one. It’s worth a look but nothing you need to keep in your shelf.

This is an amazing movie. It is scary, intelligent, dark, and full of amazing visuals. The actors are great! And the story is better. One of my favorite things about this movie is youll notice through the whole movie their are little things that through you off thinking that Scorsese made continuity errors. But when you get to the FANTASTIC TWIST ENDING everything makes sense. And depending on how you look at the ending can make you question your own sanity. Scorsese creates a true masterpiece!

Official Score: 4 / 5
