Monsters is quite a film. If you do not connect with the characters and story, it’s likely to seem pretty generic. But I connected with both the characters and the story from the start. The actors do a fantastic job. You probably have also heard that the director created the special effects in this film on his laptop. They look phenomenal and the design of the creatures is fantastic. It is true that Monsters builds off its story and characters. It is not a true Monster film. This however is not a burden. It’s a breath of fresh air. The assorted scenes that contain the creatures in them are shot so well and happen at such the right time that they are almost always jaw-dropping. The final scene in Monsters is extremely moving and thrilling. The film sure has it’s share of flaws, but if you connect to the story and characters you will likely be able to ignore them. Monsters is a one of a kind indie that feels more like an art piece than a movie. It is a beautiful film that deserves to be watched.

Monsters was a pretty good indie flick. The monsters were well designed and the cinematography was what really had my attention. All In All, Monsters was pretty good that seems a bit dragged on sometimes.

A movie in which nothing at all happens. You spend 80 minutes watching 2 stupid people, who appear to have no interest in one another, fuck around; taking pictures of destruction, getting drunk and hanging out on a small boat. You would hope that in the end something would save it but, no, the credits pop up.

It’s been a long time since a movie so highly regarded, by critics and sci fi fans alike even, has left me so utterly pissed off. What is the appeal here? Where is the story? Oh! It loops back to the opening sequence?! Who the fuck cares? Still leaves me feeling nothing.

Just because you film boring, annoying people walk around for over an hour, does NOT mean that you’ve developed characters that we are devoted to. Not in this case anyway. You’ve left your audience begging for something, ANYTHING to happen. And it never ever does.

Thanks ondemand for enabling me to pay twice as much as any other movie, just to watch this steaming turd.

Amazing, amazing, amazing – this is undoubtedly the first HUGE highlight of 2011. “Monsters” is one of the most fascinating and intriguing movies I’ve seen in a very long time, not your average monster flick but a strong and intense mix of science fiction film, love drama and survival horror (in some weird kinda way it feels a bit like a blend of “Carriers” and “District 9″ to me.).
Beautifully filmed, brilliantly written and terrifically paced; full of wonderful kinda post-apocalyptic atmosphere, nerve-wracking suspense and many touching moments.
Whitney Able (what a beauty!) and Scoot McNairy’s performances are very powerful and believable; the dialogue is mostly remarkably great. The soundtrack is awesome, all the settings look just stunning, the low budget CGI looks surprisingly fabulous and the eponymous monsters look absolutely outstanding.
A fantastic and breathtaking work of art, a masterpiece.

I won’t say this was a bad movie cause to tell you the truth I actually enjoyed the heck out of it.But I will say this is not a horror movie by any means;it is really more of a drama. The acting was very convincing and the storyline was also good.I was a little disappointed by the monsters or lack thereof, but all in all a pretty good movie.

FIRST : @ZombieApoc — did you see this film, it was not made in any type of documentary style whatsoever..That was Cloverfield….

I will say right off, I had high hopes for Monsters, and when I go into a film with high expectations, sometimes they just don’t jump that hurdle. Monsters is one of those films. The film was decent, but in no way garnered any of the claims by reviewers. With that said, there were some things that made THIS monster movie unique and worth watching. The greatest thing about the film was, purely by chance, the monsters! They were like giant walking squid, which I thought was hilarious, but also quite awesome. Normally, the dynamic in a movie like this includes either a persons journey through the post-apocalyptic scenario (i.e. I Am Legend) or an entire group of people (i.e. Cloverfield). I think the dynamic between the characters and the journey created an interesting possibility, that flopped. The characters were the lamest part of the film, and I felt the journey should have been tougher and longer (although what the ending implies, would fall inline with some of why it wasn’t). A lot of monster movies take place during “the incident” or directly after, but what I liked about “Monsters” is that it took place during the aftermath. There were several unnecessary scenes that added nothing to the story — those should have been replaced by riveting scenes from the outer-world beings. The film was not bad, and if you like this type of movie, I would say it reached into some unfamiliar territory, which was refreshing.

I enjoyed it. Its not really a horror movie at all. I guess if I had to describe it it would be a war drama with some aliens thrown in. I loved it though. The characters were really good and well acted. The camera work was great and I loved the tense atmoshphere through out. The CGI was well done too. Loved it.

Went and rented this film the day it came out on dvd b/c I was really excited to see this one. It is quite a unique film, with some very spectacular scenery shots. There are only two actors in the whole film, everyone else are actual people that were just shot as part of the film b/c that’s who they found when they started shooting. I found that this technique for the film was very unique.
The story was a “horror” concept, but wasn’t really portrayed as a horror film.
The only complaint about the film is that there should have been more scenes involving the “monsters”. The scenes that included them were particularly entertaining.
Overall, a must see. It is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

***SPOILER ALERT… I guess…*** Light sci-fi with VERY light political allegory, utterly unbelievable romance (no smokin’ hot rich chick is seriously gonna fall for a guy who literally fucks her over and then nearly gets her killed… Multiple times!), and a predictable, gratuitous ‘it’s all just a big misunderstanding’ finale. This is NOT horror… Or much of anything else. Best part of movie is hot rich chick’s cute haircut. See the awesomely original, compelling, vastly entertaining District 9 instead!

Pretty intense good movie. acting was top knotch, the script finally written. They showed you the monsters a few time and had a pretty decent action. It’s mostly a love story at heart, and is pretty slow. Don’t expect an ID4 action movie here folks. it is epic though. And it does leave you wanting more. Also like to mention the effects are brilliant. And the ending was good too. I am very happy to know this guy is directing the next godzilla film. I hope he writes it too.

More of a character, adventure, survival piece than your average creature feature but one that’s ambitious, intelligent, suspenseful and magical. It was pretty slow moving but it has a good build up and the filming and effects looked like a million bucks considering its low budget and two likable leads. To me this is much better than the other similar film District 9 because it was more involving and more believable and this one I didn’t beg it to end because it got better and better with each minute and you relate with the two leads and root for them and when it does end you want more of it. The monsters were astonishing considering the budget and were haunting and at the same time gave you the chills, brilliant filmmaking that brought thrills to this movie. It didn’t have much of a original story but the way they delivered it was effective and relatable but the one thing that disappointed me was the abrupt ending that makes me crave for a sequel which I hope they bring in the near future. Overall it didn’t exceed my expectations but it didn’t go below them and it has this certain quality, charm and drive in it that you rarely see in these type of movies and I give it extra credit for that, well done! Recommended! More of a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Really enjoyed this Film I cannot believe what the Director accomplished with such a low budget!
The monsters we not in the film a lot but their presence is felt throughout this adventure.
my only grip was the scene in the boat where a submerged monster drags a downed plane under water
i saw this scene months ago and it was presented in daylight and looked awesome in the film it is now at night so you cannot really see what is happening.

A pretty slow story, and mostly based around the relationship between the two lead characters. The whole alien storyline, acts more as a drop shadow to the film, than anything else. Definitely a little misleading and I can see a lot of people not digging this one. I thought “Monsters” showed really good cinema-photography, chemistry and digital effects.

The creature scenes are very cool–amazing, actually, considering the miniscule resources to work with. The drama/love connection that comprises much of the story—well, not so much. Was entertained by the anticipation more than anything else, and while I didn’t ever feel shortchanged by any means by there being few creature scenes (less is more in many cases), I did feel the dramatic turns were slow and uninteresting to a point of detracting from the movie. Was thinking along the same lines as Hellcat: Is daddy’s little rich (and engaged) girl actually going to fall for the lying photo wannabe who whores out at first crack? Nah…couldn’t buy that at all, so story was kinda jacked there. Watched it back-to-back and had the same results: monster effects and sound were cool; love connection, nah. Still liked it, though, and the monster scenes make this worth keeping to watch again.

This is one of the worst movies I’ve watched in a long ass time. An interesting premise is laid to waste by a pretentious crew of film makers. The script is completely non existent. I suspect much of the dialogue was improvised. Which can work if the actors are worth their salt… Not the case in Monsters. The two leads fumble around the entire film as if they have no idea what to say to each other. “So, uh yeah… like… I got this buddy who like…. uh… what?”
I found myself praying for a gruesome death to befall both of these characters. Particularly the male lead. He is a photographer so he is driven to take many pretentious pictures. Typical shit: poor mexican children wearing gas masks, three legged dogs, old people staring through train windows, a native american shedding a single tear as pile of tires burn…. However near the end of the film when he witnesses two 60 ft tall aliens fucking (!), he figures thats a good time to stop taking pictures. Monsters does showcase some impressive scenery, with some impressive wide angle shots. I can not possibly recommend anyone purchasing this film though. The only reason to watch this is if you are really hurting for some alien invasion shit (which most of us are). It certainly made me expect some aliens looking at the blu ray case. Oooohh how I was mislead. Most of the shots of the aliens are show as in-film news casts… in shakey cam… in nightvision. The director brags about how he did the films effect work himself. Well it couldn’t be more obvious that he wanted to hide his shitty work. A large portion of the film is so dark that I couldn’t tell what was going on. Now I know that this isn’t supposed to be an “effects film”. In my opinion if you can’t afford to make a giant octopus… DON’T MAKE ONE! The aliens don’t really impact the film. So why have them? Some may think this is an insightful look into the human condition… they are wrong.

I had high hopes for this one since I had read many glowing reviews. “Monsters” is one of the poorest movies I have ever witnessed. This is not watchable. Flimsy script, terrible acting, atrocious directing, and laughable f/x. I giant ass squid? Please. I really don’t know what this piece of shit is. It’s not definitely not horror. Grade-Z sci-fi? Maybe. Pass on this trash.

AVOID..at all costs. The way this movie is advertised in its trailer is NOT what the movie is. If you are going in expecting a fast paced, action packed monster movie, prepare to be extremely disappointed. If you go in expecting a terribly paced, terribly acted dreadfully boring movie jammed with useless banter between the two bland main characters. Then you will love it. Absolutely awful.

Don’t know why but I actually really enjoyed it. Not sure why its even classified as a horror movie or thriller. If anything its a drama with some hints of romance. The effects were EH but you have to respect that this film wasn’t made for much..the script and dialogue was strong enough to make me like. Performances were good and the lead girl I found damn cute.. didn’t catch the original ending first but after rewatching i did(u know what I mean if you have seen it). Probably wouldnt recommend this movie to anyone because they would probably hate it

For a movie called “Monsters”, it certainly didn’t have all that many. Once you come to grips with that, you learn it’s just a story of two people trying to survive. And they aren’t even trying to survive under the WORST conditions, just something pretty stressful. Watching their emotional journey is relatively entertaining, but it’s really the twist ending/beginning that made me thoroughly enjoy this film. More details here:
