Rubber is an unexplainable knockout. Brilliant. The film has no point yet, that is its point. To have no point. Confusing yes, but awesome. The cinematography is stunning and the films premise is entirely unique. Great pick-up by Magnet releasing. Rubber is a cult-classic in the making.
Rubber is quite a treat. Original in every sense of the word. The no point take on it is so great. I had a smile on my face the whole time. All In All, Rubber is a great film that I highly recommend.
still unsure how I truly feel about this movie, but I did get sucked into the world fairly quickly, enjoyable thought provoking and I generally felt uncomfortable. Rubber also made me question the thought process of the tire, much like walle I was interested in how it went about its choices.
Easily the biggest pile of shit i have seen in at least ten years..total hipster tryhard bullshit. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I can’t believe anyone gave this movie a positive review. Maybe if I wipe my ass with a camcorder and release it, if I’m some hipster DJ the world will think it is genius.
If there’s one movie about a tire named Robert with telekinesis you see this year…make it Rubber. This is nothing more than an exercise in the strange, a voyage into the weird, and an adventure into the expression “what the fuck.” Having all the elements of a total art house flick, Rubber strives to be nothing but different. The whole point of the film, outlined in the opening monologue by our lead cop character (Spinella) talking directly to the audience, informs us Rubber makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. Unlike a normal film, Rubber actually wants you to sit there scratching your head, while you wonder to yourself why anything is happening at all. Why does the tire have a name? Why does it love destroying things? What gave it life in the first place? Why is there an actual audience watching from a distance with binoculars? If you try and understand Rubber, there’s a 90% chance your head will explode and you will shut the film off in a matter of minutes. In no way is this a movie for the masses. I’ll be the first to say the general public will write Rubber off as garbage for not being able to relate to a single aspect. Most will find it, well, plain out weird. So of course I’m sitting there hysterically laughing as a freakin’ tire rolls around the desert. Rubber not only intrigued me, but was a brilliant farce on the idea that nothing, at all, happens for a reason. Movies are movies, separate from reality, and that’s all Rubber instills in you. (sorry to shamelessly plug but this is limited character space. Find my whole review at http://tinyurl.com/4tnp9py)
I think you have to be an older horror fan to really enjoy this movie. I found it quite enjoyable as silly as the plot may seem. Its like a 70′s horror meets Cast Away. The comedic moments were few but hilarious when delivered.(SPOILER: I might have peed myself in laughter had Rubber got back into the shower).
A movie about a killer tire sounds like the most ridiculous concept next to someone creating a human centipede. Yet, these two concepts did in fact make it onto film and both of them failed to meet their absurdly high expectations. The film is a homage to ‘no reason’, as we are told at the beginning and when a film is created for no reason, you know you are in trouble.
The film opens with a character talking directly to the viewer by breaking the fourth wall. He states the the film has no purpose, so he is actually preparing you for the most useless film you’ll ever see. Unless of course you’ve been one of the special few who have seen The Room. As interesting as this may be, it’s also a drawback. Why would someone think that to interest an audience, you need to tell them from the beginning that everything has no purpose what so ever. It makes the audience feel like they are wasting their time. Rubber wasted my time.
I don’t know why the prospect of a killer tire that makes your head explode sounded good to me, but it did. I thought I was in for a ridiculously cheesy good time. I got something else entirely. A boring, redundant film that has no fun factor. The audience is actually a part of the film, represented by a few people who actually watch the events unfold and make comments. Again, an interesting concept that never materializes.
I give the film credit for looking great, it never felt like a cheap film to me. They get creative when shooting scenes with the tire, they make the killer tire really seem to have a mind of it’s own. They actually give it a name in the credits, Robert. All this creativity is wasted though on a script that bores the hell out of the viewer. They were on a mission to make a film with no purpose, good job they achieved it.
I had very high hopes for this after I first saw the amazing teaser and the terrific trailer. Unfortunately, all my hopes were totally dashed.
“Rubber” sucks. What could have been an entertaining homage to / spoof of
70s exploitation flicks, ended up as an annoyingly stupid and totally failed arthouse/horror/comedy/whatever-experiment.
Pros: wonderful cinematography/photography, a brilliant opening scene, loads of Scanners-like head-explosions and a pretty cool soundtrack.
Cons: a pointless plot, a few even more pointless subplots, the horribly idiotic ‘No reason’-concept, some lame acting performances, completely flat humor, laaarge amounts of horribly tedious scenes, many repetitive scene and many stupid dialogue lines
- plus: it bored the shit out of me.
Don’t believe the hype: “Rubber” is rubbish.
This movie had a lot of interesting ideas, but no forward momentum. I spent the entire time looking at my watch waiting for it to end. It had such potential… an evil tire… I’m pretty disappointed.
I get it….weird for the sake of being weird. I’m fine with that, but you could at least try to make it a little bit more entertaining. It really seems as though this film was only made based on a dare, but a dare where EVERYONE loses. I commend them for their attempt at obscurity and intentions, but couldn’t sit through this again. The biggest draw to a movie about a tire that blows people head up using psychokinesis is that it does not make any sense. Rubber promised and delivered just that, upon first glance. The greatest aspect of the film, brought to us by writer and director, Quentin Dupieux, is that it never tried to hide the fact of it’s absurdity, yet embraced it with open arms.
The opening scene is a manifesto delivered straight to the audience stating, “The film you are about to see is an homage to ‘no reason’, that most powerful element of style.” The story is actually multi-faceted and thoroughly entertaining without confusing the audience. I’m sure I could definitely watch it again and again, picking up on new and interesting aspects to the plot line, aside from the main plot of the killer tire itself.
Enter Robert, the little tire that could (blow your head up). The gist of the story is that this tire rolls around killing people that get in the way of his stalking of a beautiful brunette. Doesn’t sound like it would be that entertaining right? Wrong. The head explosions are great, the camera angles and cinematography are amazing, and the soundtrack is done by Mr. Oizo and Gaspard Auge, enough said.
I recommend anyone and everyone check this movie out. I loved every minute of it and can pretty much guarantee everyone else with a love of b-movies, cheesy horror movies, and absurd black comedy, you will definitely get a kick out of this one.
I get what they were trying to do with this as trying to make some weird artsy horror/comedy hybrid. I gave it a chance and I really did not like it. I thought it was very boring and I almost fell asleep during it so that says a lot for me in my book. I mean I think this will be a hit or miss with people and it missed it’s mark with me.
Its pretty cool actually. I could have done without the people watching with binoculars commenting on everything but whatever it was cool to watch a tire kill shit with psychokinesis lol.
this movie is pretty creative and funny. the head exploding scenes are awesome. its definitely worth a watch.
Ummmmmmmm! WOW!
Yeah.
WTF. LOL.
those are just some words I can think of. This movie is the most random movie you’ll prob ever see. And the most weirdest movie too. Good fuck you to hollywood is fitting. I hope another one gets made. Love the tunes too.
Hmmm…. what do I say about this movie?
It’s not what I wanted, or what I expected… but I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy it either.
I can confidently say that its not a good movie per say, but the look of the film itself is so interesting that I cant hate on it.
If you’re looking for something weird and different you might enjoy this…. just dont expect a super intense non-stop tire killing spree like the trailers would have you believe.
The music was really good, it had good graphics and I liked how it was really random. I have never seen a trailer for this though.
The best worst movie I ever saw.
This movie was fantastic. Anyone into B movies should see it.
No reason.
It was too self aware for my liking. You could tell certain things were added simply to make the film feel different, and unique but most of it felt too forced. However, it was beautifully directed and the cinematography was excellent, and that’s why I gave it a higher score.
The Most Randomness I’ve ever seen in a Movie.
Filmography was crazy but tasteful in the strange
Acting was meh….
Maybe it should have been called Tric instead, nothings more creepy then a childs tricycle rolling down the street by itself.
Not a bad movie, didn’t quite understand it but it was ENTERTAINING!
weird movie and with no reason at all.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! You wanna know why? No reason!
Really I can only describe it in one word… Brilliant! It was so well done. From the beginning where it explains exactly what the movie is made of… No Reason, and from there only showing exactly what it means to have no reason in a movie. I’ll be honest though when I heard about it I did think that it sounded too absurd and that it wouldn’t be that good, but deep down I always did want to give it a try. And so I did.
The movie itself is Nihilistic in it’s nature, having no reason or point and not really striving towards a certain goal but it was entertaining. The scenes of head explosions were well done and I must admit that so was the writing. The cinematography was also well received as well as the music.
It was just a fun film. Basically Mr D’s review says it all better than any of us can. Great film. Great stuff!
the movie was pretty cool with great killings.
i am addicted to this movie its epic
weird, weird, weird, but fun and original
This movie is just plain awesome. Why? No reason.
