Sharktopus received more attention than perhaps any Syfy original movie in the last several years. Roger Corman was attached, the monster was chosen by fans and it was understood from the beginning that this would be a cheesy schlockfest creature feature. A film which by its very nature was intended to be a so-bad-its-good movie. Imagine my surprise when despite coming into it knowing that it would be like this, that the movie still sucked.

There were moments when the acting and pacing on hand were such that you felt like you were watching a decent monster movie and then the acting would veer off into the laughable and the effects and reactions of actors to the CGI monster would make you laugh as much as cringe. Several of the characters were simply unwatchable, like the reporter and her cameraman who looked like his tattoos had been drawn on with a permanent marker. They were so bad in fact, that I almost stopped watching the film as their poor performances were ruining my enjoyment.

I don’t mind characters written to be unlikeable, but I cannot abide characters portrayed by people who clearly cannot act and phone it in so poorly, that it distracts from what is already supposed to be a mindless film.

The high note is that the body count is high here, almost ridiculously high and that is something I like to see. Especially as the sharktopus himself was definitely suffering from a lack of focused direction. First he was a government controlled killer, then a wild beast and then a crazy serial killer? Had they stuck to any one mindset, perhaps things would have made more sense, but really they just kind of moved from kill scene to kill scene with no real rhyme or reason. The funniest thing for me was who nobody ever though to actually run away. Half the kills were people standing on the beach staring at the monster and just waiting to die.

I realize that criticizing a movie designed to be bad seems to be in poor form, but Syfy has done better. Even last year’s Dinoshark was a far better acted, directed and focused film. Then again, when you sit down to intentionally watch any movie with a title like Sharktopus, do you really have any right to complain?

A movie that you throw in at a party just to mock it with drunk friends.Yes it’s bad but it’s fun!Eric Roberts was fun as always. The Sharktopus looked pretty damn good for SYFY Channel CGI.The theme song is classic too.If you enjoy B-movie cheese then this is for you.Hopefully they’ll come out with a sequel or a CrocTopus!I give it a 7/10 just for a cool throwback of a B-movie style creature feature!

Another one of those silly and cheap-made SyFy films, yet a surprisingly enjoyable one. Compared to the lame, similarly low-budgeted films from The Asylum, this one’s just kick-ass.

Of course it’s bad. The whole movie looks pretty awful, the plot sucks, the acting is largely horrible, most of the dialogue is just stupid and many of the CGI effects look terribly silly.

However, there are a few reasons why I liked it:
    * It absolutely doesn’t take itself seriously.
    * It absolutely never gets boring.
    * The acting is so bad, it’s fun.
    * It’s packed with loads of hilarious scenes where the ridiculously brilliant-looking Sharktopus kills people or animals in really amusing ways (check out the bungee jumping scene!).
    * Highlight #1: the scene where the Sharktopus walks on land.
    * Highlight #2: a wonderful Roger Corman cameo.

Love cheese? Love bad movies? Love campy stuff? Enjoy watching movies with your brain turned off?
Then this is definitely your movie :-)
