[EFM ’12] Hammer and Exclusive Media Team On Supernatural ‘Gaslight’
Iconic production company Hammer, an Exclusive Media company, has acquired the rights to Gaslight, an original screenplay written by newcomer Ian Fried, it was announced today by Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer, and Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, Co-Chairmen of Exclusive Media. Hammer (The Woman in Black, Let Me In) will develop and produce Gaslight for the big screen.
The screenplay landed on Hollywood’s Blacklist of the best unproduced scripts in 2011 and is an atmospheric thriller in the vein of From Hell meets The Silence of the Lambs. “Secretly imprisoned in a London insane asylum, the infamous Jack the Ripper helps Scotland Yard investigators solve a series of grisly murders whose victims all share the iconic death brand: dual puncture wounds to the neck.”
Ian Fried is currently writing an original supernatural action project called Spectral for Legendary Pictures. His previous script, The Ever After Murders, featuring fairy tale characters investigating murder scenes, also landed on Hollywood’s Black List in 2010.
Every film in the Insidious franchise has received a PG-13 rating to date from the Motion Picture Association (MPA). That streak holds strong with Insidious: Out of the Further.
The sixth and newest installment has been rated PG-13 for “strong violent content, bloody images, terror and some strong language.”
Insidious: Out of the Further opens in theaters August 21 via Sony and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
As its title implies, the denizens of the Further are spilling out into our world in the new film, and its new MPA rating brings a fresh batch of images.
The film follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe.
When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.
Franchise star Lin Shaye reprises her role as Elise Rainier alongside Amelia Eve (“The Haunting of Bly Manor”) and Brandon Perea (Nope). Island Austin, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers (“Legends of Tomorrow”) star.
Sam Spruell (“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”) plays the malevolent entity known as Cyrus.
“[He] was truly scary,” Shaye previously teased. “When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response, which was crazy. So it’s a whole new catalog of people and even of ideas.” Get a peek at Cyrus below.
Jacob Chase (Come Play) writes and directs, sharing story credit with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring: Last Rites, Orphan). David Garbett (Evil Dead Rise) serves as director of photography.
Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell produce, with Johnson-McGoldrick, Ryan Turek, Steven Schneider, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones as executive producers.
