There Are No (Miami) Zombies… Only Pain, Suffering & Absolutely Shameless Reporting

While the viral story about a Miami man caught chewing on the face of a homeless gent may have been (extremely) interesting, it has no place on this site or any other similar, IMO. It’s a tragic, sad situation that was exploited for website “traffic.”

Although everyone has the right to report whatever they choose, “shameless” and “despicable” are the two words that come to my mind.

The story needs no introduction as a man – presumably on an illegal, designer street drug “bath salts” – was shot down after eating a homeless man’s face. It took multiple shots to bring the psycho down after he growled at police officers. The internet took off with stories and jokes about “zombies” and the “apocalypse.” This writer isn’t sure how a sad commentary on our country equals zombie apocalypse?

In fact, Richard Lawson at the Atlantic Wire puts it quite well “It’s a real, sad, terrible thing that happened. All those other catastrophes are real too. Stringing together a bunch of awful tragedies for the purpose of making a lazy listicle is so checked-out and blase and insensitive that it’s, well, kinda disgusting…Just maybe try not to be so excited that some poor man had his face chewed off by a naked drug addict who still had bits of flesh in his mouth when he was shot and killed.

I have no issues with mainstream news reporting on this tragic incident, but watching it contort into entertainment, while some man is in the hospital suffering, makes me sick to my stomach. You can read a fantastic article about the real story at Jezebel.

Sure, we missed out on some crazy traffic, but this writer will stick to his ethics and live knowing that, we here at Bloody Disgusting, did the right thing by not reporting on it. FOR SHAME.

Well said Mr. D, I guess it would be kinda like reported on a school shooting ’cause it’s like a high school slasher.

I won’t lie and say that I didn’t jump to the “zombie” conclusion myself. But it might not be as extreme as either “pure understanding of the situation” and “making it into a joke”. Rather, I’m sure that, for a great many people, turning it into a “zombie apocalypse” joke was their way of dealing with the almost unfathomable brutality and horror of the situation. People need to accept things in their own way, in their own time. Perhaps their approach is insensitive, mocking, and shameless, but that’s what they need to do.
That being said, I jumped to the zombie conclusion because it was honestly the first thing that came to mind. What that says about me is something entirely different, haha!

The media is using violence as entertainment?! THIS IS AN ASTOUNDING DISCOVERY.

    • EvanDickson

He’s talking about entertainment sites claiming it as news, which is different.

  • Hellrazer34

Wait you just reported on it by saying how you were not going to report on it.

    • EvanDickson

It’s an editorial. Nothing in the headline was making light of it – which is what the issue is.

Humanitarian of the year. Complete with lots of horn tooting.

i’m very grateful you guys didn’t report on/show pictures of that poor man’s face. people have been bringing it up on other sites and while i love FAKE gore, the real stuff i hate considering someone was actually hurt/killed. so i thank you BD for not covering this news.

  • smash-adams

It’s one thing to not report on it but another to not report on it and then report on how righteous and ethical you are for not reporting on it while being sure to put “Miami Zombies” in the headline for the google search results.

    • divisionbell

Yeah I have to agree with you. I was following along with the article point out who shameful it was to cover, but once I saw “Sure, we missed out on some crazy traffic, but this writer will stick to his ethics and live knowing that, we here at Bloody Disgusting, did the right thing by not reporting on it. FOR SHAME.” you lost my support…

      • EvanDickson

I think it’s a good explanation as to why we weren’t covering something that a lot of other horror sites were. And it’s an editorial – so it’s opinion. It just happens to be an opinion I agree with.

  • Well said. I very much agree. I’m proud to be a part of a site run by those who are so full of compassion.

  • No, Shame on you! You just did the same thing while condemning others about their coverage. You recounted the horrific happenings in Miami while at the same time complaining about other sites reporting on it. To me that’s hypocritical.

  • flesheater24

IDK people on bath salts are crazy as fuck legit. I think zombies are coming. The CDC and everyone else is lying. Only a matter of time. This is just the start.

  • Personally 3 different episodes in 3 different places in 3 consecutive days throws some alarm switches in my brain. Maybe I’m paranoid, I call it prepared. There’s a fungus that takes over the body and mind of ants, you don’t think our government isn’t experimenting with this on other, larger animals? My philosophy in life is question everything. Sure it’s a terrible thing to have happened, but I for one am prepared in case it turns out to be legitimately a pandemic.

I haven’t actually heard about this “Miami Zombie” story until just now, thanks to Bloody-Disgusting. I find it ironic that you’re trying to point the finger at others, while you yourself exploit this horrific story. You can say it’s an opinion/editorial all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you gave more fuel to the fire. If you want to make a statement, then you’ll delete this coverage before others who haven’t heard of this story are subjected to it.

  • pyrepunk

I just don’t understand the point of y’all posting this why even bother yeah it was a terrible thing but you just look like everyone else by posting this unprofessional and off topic…just keep up with the great horror updates and leave tragedy to the other idiots 🙂

  • killrobot

I *think* his point is that while so many people are running with this and making zombie jokes, there’s a guy in the hospital with half his face chewed off. We don’t joke about people getting shot, or stabbed, or anything like that… this isn’t from a script, it’s a real life tragedy we shouldn’t lose site of that.
