Ex-‘Alien’ Prequel, ‘Prometheus’, Release Date Shift; Michael Fassbender in Talks

Update: Variety reports that Michael Fassbender (pictured) is officially in talks to star opposite Noomi Repace.

An Alien prequel no more, Twentieth Century Fox has delayed the release of the newly titled Prometheus three months to a June 8, 2012 date. The Ridley Scott-directed film was set up to be a prequel to the groundbreaking 1979 film Alien that Scott directed.

It will precede that film, in which the crew (headlined by Dragon Tatto star Noomi Rapace) of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them. No word on the new plot.

Damon Lindelof (“Lost”) is working together with Scott on the new version of the script, which was originally written by Jon Spaihts and based on an idea by Scott. It was under Lindelof that the project morphed into something more original.
