The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been available for a few months now, gifting console gamers with a small taste of the potential of next-gen gaming. As we look to the future and the many horror games we have to look forward to in 2014, I’d like to take a minute to look back at a few of the games that brought the horror genre to where it is today.

We have plenty of sequels and new IPs to look forward to in the coming years, now it’s time to imagine how great some of our old favorites would look on all this snazzy new hardware.

Read on for my list of 6 Horror Games That Deserve Next-Gen Remakes!

Silent Hill/Silent Hill 2

Honestly, a remake of any of the first four Silent Hill games would be welcome at this point, but it’s the first two that really need it. Honestly, I’d prefer a next-gen-ified Silent Hill 2, my favorite entry in the series, but it felt strange asking for that before we’ve seen a remake of the game that started it all. Some claim the survival horror genre is dead, but I think they couldn’t be more wrong. What better way to prove this than by introducing a new generation of gamers to one, or two, of the greatest horror games of all time?

Manhunt

I’m ashamed to say I missed Manhunt’s tenth anniversary, which I should have celebrated this past November. To make up for that, and to honor a fantastic — if somewhat controversial — horror game, I thought I’d give it a mention here. We’ve seen significant leaps in graphic fidelity in the last decade, and there’s certainly a niche for next-gen, open-world convict murder simulators that only this series can fulfill.

There’s nothing quite like Manhunt out there right now, and I’m positive the cult following the series has accrued since the first game’s release would be more than happy to step into the bloodied shoes of James Earl Cash at least one more time.

Resident Evil 2

Much like Silent Hill, I wouldn’t complain if Capcom went ahead and remade any of the first four Resident Evil games. I’d include Resident Evil 4 too, but that game gets enough love already. The original game has already seen a remake, though that was for the GameCube, so I’d say it’s just about time for another. Before that happens, the second game needs to be experienced by a new generation. It’s a defining moment in the series — and for the survival horror genre as a whole — and I’m always up for another zombie killing spree in Raccoon City.

If Capcom isn’t willing to do it, we can always leave it to the fans to give us what we want.

Man I would love to see all of these. Especially a new manhunt or the thing. Blows my mind that they haven’t tried to touch either of those games in a while. A nextgen take on The Thing could be beautiful.

I also wouldn’t complain if they took RE2 to nextgen. Still my favorite of the series.

Been wanting a Thing remake for a long time now, but I’d welcome all the stuff on your list.

  • Blood-Sicles

Would love to see Manhunt and Nightmare Creatures get the next gen treatment! Sucks that ESRB scared Rockstar away from making another Manhunt.

    • Marc Hughes

I would bet all the money on the planet that it had NOTHING to do with the ESRB whatsoever and everything to do with the fact that overall they were pretty terrible, god awful games that did not sell….A company has to actually make money to want to continue making a product….The ESRB did scare anyone

      • MachineGunGandhi

For all the money on the planet, I would definitely take you up on that bet.

When Manhunt 2 was originally rated by the ESRB, they slapped on the AO rating [Adults Only for the uninformed] which basically would prevent the game from being sold at retailers like Gamestop, Best Buy, etc.

If Rockstar wanted to release physical copies through these vendors, they would have to cut out enough offensive material to get the Mature rating instead.

Thus they had to censor and essentially neuter their creation to get the ESRB off their nuts. It was important to note that this was before games like God of War, Mass Effect, and Red Dead Redemption started swarming the ESRB by showing titties on-screen and keeping a straight face. They basically made the ESRB throw their little anti-fun anti-sex checklist clipboards in the air and say “Fuck It! I give up… all you perverted game developers can cater to horny geeks and perverts. I don’t give a flying fuck anymore. Here’s an M-rating for your games. I hope you sleep well at night knowing that you’re peddling smut to the childrens and soccer moms who play these games”

Spoiler: They totally did sleep well that night… on piles of money.

Moral of the Story: Sex sells.

Original point of the story: Before games like God of War peer-pressured the ESRB to allow titties on-screen and super-ridiculous violence, Manhunt and Manhunt II had to deal with the Anti-Sex Nazi version of the ESRB.

Ya gotta remember that Rockstar was taking heat in the bum from soccer moms who claimed that their games were murder simulators. Even Bully was under fire… and Bully is one of the tamer Rockstar games :P

  • Seal_Clubber

How about the OG survival horror game: Friday the 13th, from the NES ?

    • Adam Dodd

YES. So much yes. I’d take any kind of next-gen Friday the 13th game.

    • SaltSlasher

If they took the same concept, but actually spent a year or two developing gameplay, then it would be an amazing game!

      • MachineGunGandhi

Fun Fact: The repetitive catchy music is still stuck in my head to this day.

  • KidKobun

I’ve been wanting a new Nightmare Creatures for years! I think I still have a couple of the soundtrack sampler CDs somewhere…maybe in one of my office drawers. Also wouldn’t mind seeing a new Thing or Dino Crisis either. :)

  • GreigShelob

A remake of Silent Hill 1 and 3 would be great (I’m not too fond of 2) preferably with the shamblers (? or whatever the grey kids in the school are called).

RE2 would be great aswell, but I’d rather see Outbreak 1 and 2 get remade.

  • darkdackel

“Dino Crisis” ??! – Are you f*cking kiddin’ me ?!

    • Adam Dodd

I’ve never been more serious. You should see my serious face right now.

  • blake3371

Why you no haz Silent Hill 3 here?

    • Adam Dodd

Because I figure one (or both) of the first two games deserves some attention before SH3.

  • bigbudda

Where the hell is Fatal Frame?

  • richp_91

I agree with Resident Evil 1-4 including Code Veronica. I also agree with Dino Crisis! That game is due for a remake or sequel.

  • Marty McFly

All I know is that RE2 was one of the first games I ever played, it sucked me into the world of horror. I would love a remake of the classic Resident Evil 2 with updated graphics. As far as the camera angle, I’m fine either way, I like over the shoulder sometimes and I also like the fixed angles. If they remake RE2 for PS3 I would be a very happy camper.

  • bloodyirishman

Manhunt would be amazing to play on a next gen system, I would like to see Clock Tower included on this list too, Scissorman haunted my dreams as a child lol.

    • ECHG_Drew

Holy shit Clock Tower!! Such great memories from that game. Great call!

    • Adam Dodd

Clock Tower could definitely use a remake, I miss Scissorman.

      • treevvoor

YES, a Clock Tower remake would me amazing.

  • ECHG_Drew

Great list, I would LOVE to see a new Manhunt. They did an HD remake of Silent Hill 2 and 3 for PS3, called Silent Hill HD collection. They couldn’t get the original voice actor for James though. There have been grumblings lately about an RE2 remake. I really hope that happens, as it is by far my favorite one of the series.

  • Slasher716

Cool! Good list. I miss Nightmare Creatures 1 & 2.

    Also Dino Crisis was amazing.

  • Jocifer666

All of these games I’d love to see remade. The only games I’d have to add, are a more survival horror oriented remake of The Suffering, as well as a reboot of Condemned.

  • Unlimax

    Number 7 : Parasite Eve
    Number 8 : Haunting Ground
    Number 9 : Clock Tower
Number 10 : Rule of Rose

How could you guys miss these games ?

    • Unlimax

Also .. sorry for being rude :3
Just created Account here to say this if you don’t mind ~

    • ClericMarshall

I don’t think Parasite Eve needs a remake, that game is still awesome as it is.

  • Abaddon—AD

I would really like to see a remake of Fatal Frame or Parasite Eve..

  • Nurse Derpusheen

Silent Hill 2, I would be soo fucking happy if they made a remaster. Same thing with Manhunt and Resident Evil 2.

  • ClericMarshall

I would love for Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem to have at least a top notch next gen sequel. I remember playing that game on gamecube all night long and being all tense about it.

    • MachineGunGandhi

That game was really fun only if you let your sanity levels drop.

      • ClericMarshall

yeah, that’s the only problem I had with it that maintaining your sanity high was too easy.

  • spiderborland

Silent Hill 2 for sure because Shattered Memories kind of covered Silent Hill 1. Kind of. Also, the Silent Hill HD Collection was (and is) one of the biggest disappointments ever in video game history for me.

  • Nicholas Blondsey

Illbleed from the late great Dreamcast. That game has a ton of interesting gameplay mechanics. And it’s like playing a terrible b movie slasher.

  • Roxandria

My god Capcom get on Dino Crisis!!!! That was my childhood!!!
