[E3 2014] ‘Dead Island 2’ Confirmed, Coming in 2015

I did not see this coming. Apparently, Epidemic isn’t the only Dead Island game that’s in the works, because Deep Silver has just revealed Dead Island 2, developed by Yager. It looks as if they’ve finally decided to eschew from the more serious tone of the first two games in the series in favor of a cheeky, over-the-top style that (I think) better suits it.

Here’s what the sequel is all about, according to its press release:

Several months after the events on Banoi, the United States military has put the Golden State under full quarantine. Now a restricted zone, California has become a bloody paradise for those who refuse to leave their homes and an action-packed playground for renegades who seek adventure, glory and a fresh start. Combining the classic Dead Island elements of immersive close combat, action and role-playing, Dead Island 2 features crazy, never-before-seen handcrafted weapons and over-the-top characters in taking players from the iconic Golden Gate to the celebrated beachfront boardwalk of southern California’’s Venice Beach.

And here’s the trailer.

Ok that trailer was awesome but correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Riptide number 2?

    • Adam Dodd

It’s confusing, right? Most people would say yes, but to Techland, Riptide is considered a spin-off, or a “Dead Island 1.5”.

      • Polsdofer

I don’t agree with that, this should of just been number 3.
Also what does this mean for Dying Light? If this game is a copy and paste of Riptide which was a copy and paste of the first Dead Island then I’m not really sure why they should even bother with releasing this game, especially if Dying Light comes out which looks a lot better that Dead Island and Riptide ever looked.

        • Weresmurf

Riptide was just a standalone expansion pack. It wasn’t full priced or a whole new game. Look at the Infamous add ons, or the GTA add ons like Lost and the Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony. They’re not sequels, just expansions. Just as Vice City wasn’t GTA 4 and San Andreas wasn’t GTA V. Respectfully it’s not hard to comprehend. Their idea is that the real 2 starts with new characters, a new locale etc. I’m all for that and the trailer kicked ass!

          • karnzo

Dead Island: RipTide was not an expansion pack. It was a whole new
game. I bought it as a new game. It was a direct sequel to Dead
            Island. Look it up.

          • Polsdofer

Yeah i agree with karnzo, the storyline kept going with Riptide and it did feel like the exact same game as the first one.

Sorry gentlemen but youre wrong. Thats the actual dev there saying its an expansion/spinoff and NOT a sequel. Time to build a bridge and get over it guys. Youre doing that “thing” on the net where you try to hang onto a non existent point despite reality presenting evidence to the contrary.

          • karnzo

Have you played it? Obviously not. I played it, after purchasing it as a new game at FULL PRICE. That’s why GameStop still has the download as a separate game. An expansion or dlc would require the first game, which it doesn’t. It works as a stand alone. So it’s not an expansion. You would have just inserted the original Dead Island, and played from that disc. That is impossible to do. I challenge you to try it. And your statement “Youre doing that “thing” on the net where you try to hang onto a non
existent point despite reality presenting evidence to the contrary”, is ignorant and pointless.

            Read these!

            1. You’ve used Wikipedia. Get a better source.
            2. All it says there is it’s not DLC? Its NOT DLC it’s a standalone, that’s not even debated lol. My god.

Expansions still come as standalone products. I think you need to be aware of this.

Infamous Second Son : First Light, is an expansion to Infamous Second Son. Guess what? You don’t need Infamous Second Son to play it!

Ballad of Gay Tony was an expansion to GTA IV! So was Lost and the Damned! Guess what? You didn’t need GTA IV to play it!

Riptide is an expansion to Dead Island. You don’t NEED the original Dead Island to play it.

Case in point, Dead Island 2, the SEQUEL is coming soon.

My god how stupid are you dude.

          • Weresmurf

Here you go. Techland never, ever presented it as a sequel, it was more an expansion/extension to the original. Given you seem to be more level headed in conversation I hope you take the time to read it. It’s nothing to be mad/angry over, just the fact it was a fun game. It doesn’t lose anything not being an actual sequel as such, it was still mad fun.

      • Weresmurf

It’s not a hard concept to understand Adam. At least, it shouldn’t be…

  • DI is a spin off from the first game but the storyline went nowhere. The characters were terrible stereotypes and their models just unbelievably bad. I loved both DEAD ISLANDS premise – an ideally tropically beautiful island makes a nice contrast with the whole carnage and mayhem. But the whole plot was terrible, the sub missions boring after a while and any supporting characters one dimensional. Having said that, you can have some hours of great fun! I am thinking now that how come they name DI2 if this is taking place in California? Is that an island? And it seems that it shares similarities with dying light regarding the setting? Sunny beach and city? No?

Ah wow, I had no idea you guys already covered this yesterday, I just saw that today and I’m super stoked!

A note on Riptide…I liked it, but yeah it’s insanely flawed compared to the original game. It’s just very short, the story got worse with an ending that’s as unsatisfying as fnck, all the new enemies (except the Drowners) were pretty crappy and made things more tedious, and they got rid of the hockey mask wearing zombies from Moresby! I know Henderson was meant to be a more prosperous town but come on, who wears overalls on an island resort?! That said there’s the few positives: the flares made the underground a real fun trip, and all the new weapons were great (bo staff, sniper rifle, harpoon gun, golf club). I’ve played it at least twice with Sam B and I’m considering transferring my Purma there or trying out Logan.

    • Ha, I did the other way around. Finished it with Purma twice just because she is such a badass and then then started up again with Sam. Some bits were fantastic – I loved Henderson more than the whole flooded island as it was most of the times empty and desolate!

  • I’m not always into zombie games, but this looks awesome. As an LA-native, I love how they depicted the Venice Boardwalk – perfect detail and what a great action sequence. Oh and great use of “The Bomb” by Pigeon John, too. It’s perfect, why do we have to wait until 2015 to play this??? It’s gonna be siiick
