‘The Blair Witch Project’ Sequel Is “Inevitable”

Published

on

Eduardo Sanchez, one half of the filmmaking duo behind the found-footage masterpiece The Blair Witch Project, is giving fans hope that one day they may finally get a sequel.

After the 1999 indie hit broke box office records, a sequel was rushed into production. While it has aged pretty well, it definitely put a proverbial dagger in the coffin of the could-have-been mega franchise.

After the resurgence of found-footage, and the popularity of rebooting franchises, it’s only a matter of time until Lionsgate gets behind a new installment of Blair Witch, a franchise that deserves a second coming.

“We have been talking to Lionsgate and there has been a little bit of movement but nothing is concrete,” Sanchez tells DreadCentral “The film seems inevitable to me, but really it’s just a matter of it being the right time. I’m thinking it’s going to happen sooner than later at this point, but I always say that. There’s always rumblings and certain ideas being pushed around and such. While I don’t have anything firm to talk about now, it wouldn’t surprise me if something happened within the next year or two.”

Seriously. A new Blair Witch is a no-brainer like none other. The question is, what direction would it head? Personally, I’d love to see a mix of found-footage and traditional film work that shows a news crew investigating the infamous legend of the Blair Witch, and the kids that went missing in 1999…

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
