‘Death House’ Sounds Like The ‘Expendables’ Of Horror

The Expendables movies were, for me, a total throwback to the glory days of 80’s action. It took some of the biggest names from that era and threw them all together into a series of gun fights, explosions, and cheesy one-liners. Basically, it was everything I could’ve wanted and more.

Now we might have a similar idea coming to the horror genre in the form of Death House, which supposedly stars, and get ready for this, Robert Englund, Gunnar Hansen, Sid Haig, Doug Bradley, Bill Moseley, Dee Wallace, Danny Trejo, Ken Foree, Michael Berryman, Barbara Crampton, and more.

Holy. Shit.

The film is being written by Jay Black, Gunnar Hansen, Brian Herzlinger, and Harrison Smith, with Smith and Herzlinger directing. It is aiming for an October 20th release date.

A lengthy synopsis comes from the film’s IMDb page:

The Four Horsemen are the most notorious serial killers of all time. Robert Englund’s weapon of choice is fire; Gunnar Hansen has an unquenchable thirst for human flesh; Bill Moseley is a surgeon, and tends to focus on mutilation and torture; and Doug Bradley shares a bond with spiders, particularly the Brown Recluse Spider, whose poison Bradley is happy to dispense among those unfortunate enough to meet him.

All four killers are safely housed in a maximum security wing in the basement of the infamous Dodhoff Prison, aka THE DEATH HOUSE.

The newest inmate to the prison is Sid Haig, a Hitler-wannabe with a cult following, whose right-hand man Jeff is almost as sadistic as him.

Also arriving at the prison is a college field trip, led by Professor Dee Wallace. She brings her Psychology class every year to observe, from a safe distance of course, the four horsemen in their prison habitat.

The students include Anna, a no-nonsense passionate student; Nick, who’s taking the class for a glorified credit,; Harold, the geek who could have majored in anything and been successful,; and Suzie, the slut of the group. Michael, the Professor’s Assistant, keeps everything on track for Wallace.

During the tour of the prison by Warden Danny Trejo, Jeff and the cultists invade, staging a prison break to free their god-like leader- and they are shooting to kill. The assault is successful, as they free Sid, but the Warden, locks down the prison to keep Sid from escaping, and contain the prison break. The warden directs the students down a back passage to the boiler room to save their lives. Unfortunately, that is the Warden’s last move, as he is gunned down by the infiltrating mob.

Anna hits the button to release the four horsemen from their cells, knowing they are the only option to take down the mob, and save their own lives in the process. But blood is universal, and soon the students find themselves navigating a brutal and gruesome labyrinth to survive, as the Four Horsemen, in their quest for freedom, unleash holy hell.

This sounds pretty bad ass, I just hope it’s not cheap and bootleg looking. This concept can be pretty dope!

It would be cool if it happens, but it sounds like one of those projects that doesn’t make it past the planning stage.

    • Julian Barrett

This is past the planning stage and will happen. Stay tuned.

  • This is Harrison Smith, director/writer of Death House. The entire article is based on a defunct synopsis. The updated IMDB posting is not live as of yet. Would appreciate you revisiting or redacting this article until the proper information is posted. I rewrote the original script by Gunnar Hansen and the storyline presently on IMDB is no longer relevant. Happy top provide you with the new FULL synopsis of the film as I believe you will find it different, strong and something worth looking into. Thanks. To the other comments, this will NOT be a cheap looking production. Top production value.

  • Bouncy X

well hopefully its actually good..i LOVE Robert Englund, dude is my hero and meeting him last year was the highlight of my life!! but its no secret many of his movies aren’t that good…so while the idea and the cast sounds cool…lets hope the final product is as well.

regarding an Expendables horror thing….we are getting another one starring a bunch of actresses from the horror franchises. There’s 3 or 4 from Nightmare alone and then some from Halloween, Friday …i forget the title but yeah, that could be cool too if done well.

  • ThunderDragoon

Too bad they couldn’t get Jamie Lee Curtis. No Brad Dourif either? Danielle Harris?

  • Rick-Taylor

    Very optimistic for this film.

Not very enthusiastic about the artwork. It’s all there, just needs to be rearranged. My opinion and what I would do…. move the title towards the top, add a drop shadow, enlarge it to take up maximum space lengthwise. Enlarge the skeletons and ghosts while adding a slight color to have it stand out more. Cut off everything under the skeletons.

  • Jonathan Larsson

This would be a movie to kill for. In the past I thought of Hatchet as the Expendables of horror-movies, but this one sounds like it could utilize the concept to a better degree.

Kind of amazing that you admit to killing off one of the name actors in your synopsis. RIP Danny Trejo’s warden. Also, I wouldn’t call any of them but Englund a bona fide horror star. Where is Kane Hodder? Bruce Campbell? Jamie Lee Curtis? Now those are horror stars.

    • Bryan Gibson

Kane Hodder is number 3 in the cast list on the IMDB page. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2984576/

    • Thefinalcard

You wouldn’t call Doug Bradley a “Horror Star”.
      You’re kidding me, right?
I love Englund and Freddy is probably one of my favorite horror icons but, truth be told, Doug Bradley can out-act ALL of these fools and His portrayal of Pinhead is legendary… Even in Hell.

      • KennyThaKilla

Robert Englund is a classically trained actor, so I wouldn’t include him in the list of “fools.”

  • DeadInHell

When I saw the title I got excited, foolishly hoping that a certain someone might be involved. For my money, you can’t have a horror Expendables without Bruce Campbell – though he does seem to be busy with other things lately, about which I can’t complain. Robert Englund is great, but the rest of the cast isn’t on the same level. Maybe I’m just being too picky.

Also, am I alone in hating Sid Haig? The guy cannot act for anything, and he hasn’t been in a decent movie ever in his life. He should have remained a B-movie memory. Thanks for nothing, Rob Zombie.

I don’t think this is THE horror Expendables, they just said it sounds like it’d be.

Pretty distracting. Can’t get into a movie while playing “Spot the Horror Star”.
