A traditional sequel doesn’t really work for a game like Until Dawn, which features a branching narrative and an entirely expendable cast of characters. Developer Supermassive Games will need to get creative should they decide to turn it into a series, and while it may be too early to talk about what that would mean right now, at least we know they’re thinking about it.
The game has been a surprise success for Sony, despite they’re not allocating much in the way of marketing resources when it launched back in August.
Until Dawn executive producer Pete Samuels recently sat down with PlayStation LifeStyle to discuss the possibility of a sequel, and how they might go about approaching it.
“I think that you should expect the team to build on what we’ve done with Until Dawn, whether it’s in horror or in other genres,” explains Samuels. “We’re already working on one thing that does that, whilst exploring other avenues for our other teams in anticipation of them finishing their current projects.”
So they might do what Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream has done with their similarly cinematic interactive movies by taking what worked with Until Dawn and bringing it to a completely different game, potentially in a different genre. I wouldn’t mind that, but what about that sequel?
We do talk internally about what Until Dawn 2 could be, as it clearly can’t be a sequel in the traditional sense, with the same characters facing the same threat, not least of which because in different stories some or all of them are already dead! We’ve investigated other ways we could do Until Dawn 2 but it probably is a little early to be discussing that.
