Rumor: Techland is Making ‘Dying Light 2’

Published

on

Dead Island series creator Techland struck gold, again, with their second open-world zombie survival game, Dying Light. It should come as no surprise to hear they may already be waist-deep in the production of a sequel to one of the most successful games, horror or otherwise, of 2015. Still though, it’s nice to think about.

Techland has two games in development, and one of them may be Dying Light 2.

The first isn’t a sequel, nor does it have anything to do with their promising dark fantasy brawler Hellraid, which has been simmering on the back burner since last June.

It’s something new, though it will share some similarities to the studio’s other titles. We still don’t know much, aside from what we’ve just gleaned from Eurogamer and their chat with Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka, who described it as an “open-world fantasy game with RPG elements” that will have a slightly larger scope compared to Dying Light. It will also have the expected blend of single-player and co-op.

Techland’s Warsaw team is handling the fantasy RPG, while in Wrocław, the team that made Dying Light — a game that currently has an 8 million-strong user base — is working on a follow-up to one of their existing IPs.

Dying Light 2 is a fairly safe bet, but I doubt it’ll be ready for E3 next month.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78

In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).

Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.

While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.

The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.

Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.

We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
