George Romero Wants to Make a Zombie Noir Film; Can’t Get Funding

How did we let this happen?!

Who created zombies, as we know them today? All of that credit must be given to George A. Romero, who thoroughly reinvented the zombie with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. In the years since, Romero continued to pioneer the evolution of the zombie with follow-ups like Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, and most recently, Survival of the Dead. It’s now been 7 years since Romero last made a zombie movie, and the unfortunate reality is that as much as he wants to make another, he’s completely powerless in actually making it happen.

Yes, though zombies are more popular than ever thanks to the smash hit success of “The Walking Dead,” and though countless zombie movies are released direct-to-video every single week, the man who literally invented zombies cannot get funding to make another zombie movie. Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think? Isn’t it heartbreaking, don’t you think?

Speaking with Indiewire, Romero just provided some insight into his struggle.

I did Land of the Dead, which was the biggest zombie film I had ever made,” Romero recalled. “I don’t think it needed to be that big. That money went largely to the cast. They were great, but I don’t think that money needed to be spent. Dennis Hopper’s cigar budget cost more than the entire production of Night of the Living Dead. That’s the way it is.”

Now, because of World War Z and The Walking Dead, I can’t pitch a modest little zombie film, which is meant to be sociopolitical,” he continued. “I used to be able to pitch them on the basis of the zombie action, and I could hide the message inside that. Now, you can’t. The moment you mention the word zombie, it’s got to be, ‘Hey, Brad Pitt paid $400 million to do that.’

What kind of zombie movie would Romero make, if he could get funding?

In 2007, Diary of the Dead all of a sudden made money. I was blind-sighted by that. One of the producers said, ‘Let’s make another one quick.’ I didn’t know what else I could talk about,” said the godfather of zombie cinema. “Diary of the Dead talked about how social media is haunting us today. I didn’t have anything else to talk about. So I decided to go back to the original premise of misunderstanding and people not being able to see each other’s point of view. I said I’ll do this one as a western and the next one as a noir. So did the western, nobody liked it, and the other one fell away. Then, all of a sudden, here came The Walking Dead. So you couldn’t make a zombie film that had any sort of substance.”

It had to be a zombie film with just zombies wreaking havoc. That’s not what I’m about.”

Excuse us while we go cry in the corner.

Here’s an interesting one for you today. “Post Malone, Michael Bay and Brad Fuller’s Platinum Dunes, and Vault Comics have partnered to create an all-new IP universe based on an original story by the 8x diamond recording artist,” Bloody Disgusting has learned this afternoon.

What exactly does this mean? Well, the plan is for Vault Comics to launch this original genre story as a graphic novel in 2025, with Platinum Dunes developing the film adaptation.

The comic book/movie doesn’t yet have a title, but here’s what we know so far…

The official press release details today, “Blending elements of road thrillers like Mad Max: Fury Road, and demonic horror like Evil Dead, the story is set in medieval Europe, where the only thing standing in the way of the horde of demons infesting the continent is a mysterious armored 18-wheeler seemingly sent back from the heavens.”

“I’m so pumped to share this badass story with the world, and I couldn’t ask for better partners than Michael Bay and Vault to help bring this story to life,” Post Malone said in a statement.

“This is the kind of project you dream about,” said Vault CEO Damian Wassel. “We get to work with an exceptional artist at the top of his game to build a completely original story from the ground up. We have an iconic director helping to guide the creative development. We’re going to bring the world a mind-blowing graphic novel, and that’s just the beginning.”

“I love working with talented people, and Post Malone is incredibly gifted,” says Bay. “I am excited to work with him on such an intriguing idea, and when you add Vault to the mix, it raises the bar to another level. This new IP is just what the graphic world needs right now.”
