R.I.P. Simon Sayce, Creator of the ‘Hellraiser’ Puzzle Box, Has Passed Away

Published

One of the most iconic props in horror history is unquestionably the Lament Configuration Box from the Hellraiser franchise, which of course brings Pinhead and his Cenobites out of Hell and into our physical reality.

In the films, the puzzle box was created by Philip LeMarchand. In real life, however, it was artist Simon Sayce who designed the iconic prop.

Today we’re sad to report that Simon Sayce has passed away after an extended battle with cancer. The news comes courtesy of Sayce’s own Facebook page, which friends have been using as a memorial.

This morning I received word that Simon had passed. Over the past two years I had become friends with Simon Sayce getting to know him, trading bad jokes and off color humor and talking shop on projects we were both working on,” wrote friend Eric Gross. “Sadly his health started to go quickly and he spent less and less time on FaceBook or responding to texts and e-mails. When Simon went quiet, that’s when I knew the mind was willing but the body had just had enough.”

Simon Sayce was a teacher, a friend and an artist above all else,” Gross added.

In addition to designing the puzzle box, Sayce also created David Cronenberg’s mask for Nightbreed, as well as the character Peloquin for the same film. He worked on the special effects teams for a few other horror films in the late ’80s and into the early ’90s, including The Unholy, The Lair of the White Worm and I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle.

Sayce dug into the box’s creation in the doc Leviathan, which you can watch below.

Rest in Peace, sir.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.

As someone who is obsessed with UFOS (or more recently known as UAPs) and the concept of extraterrestrials, I love a good documentary. Sightings have been on the rise since the 1940s, with the atomic bomb seemingly acting as a catalyst for new visitors. But what are these UFOs/UAPs? Is there an explanation or are they simply beyond our explanation? Why are they here? Who are they? How much do our governments know? The questions are endless and so are the documentaries that attempt to uncover the secrets behind decades of sightings and alleged confrontations.

Whether you’re a seasoned viewer or new to the rabbit hole, there’s always a handful of interesting documentaries to get your neurons firing and leave you with sleepless nights. SCREAMBOX is investigating with the addition of several docs, all streaming now on the Bloody Disgusting-powered service. Here’s the breakdown:

Aliens Uncovered: ET or Man-Made (2022): The crash of Roswell wasn’t meant for New Mexico. In 1947, a neighboring state had 3 major sightings that were swept under the rug.

Aliens Uncovered: The Golden Record (2023): In the late 70s, the US government launched a message to our distant neighbors.

Roswell (2021): This high-flying documentary examines the July 1947 crash of a United States Army Air Forces balloon at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. Theories claim the crash was actually that of a flying saucer, but what is the truth?
