Retro Power! Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis Retro Consoles Due This Fall!
With all the hoopla about the upcoming SNES classic, what about other classic consoles? Like Nintendo’s main rival during the 90s in the Sega Genesis? Or, if you want to really go back, the Atari 2600? Lucky for retro gaming fans, AtGames will have you covered this September.
On July 28th, pre-orders will begin for both the Sega Genesis Flashback, and the Atari Flashback 8 Gold consoles. More details are expected as to an exact release date as well as pricing, but there’s a helluva lot to love about these two consoles. Like the NES and SNES Classic, both the Atari and Genesis Flashback will come pre-loaded with games, feature 720p HDMI output, two wireless controllers (done in the styles of the respective console), two controller ports for your original wired gamepads, and a save/pause/rewind feature for each game.
For Genesis fans, we’ve got a whack to dive into: Games like Altered Beast, Decap Attack, Golden Axe and its sequels, Mortal Kombat and its sequels (though no Ultimate MK3), and Shinobi III are just a taste of the 85 included titles. You can find the full list here.

As for the Atari Flashback 8, as the name implies, this is the eighth iteration that AtGames has done for the 2600. The Flashback 8 comes packed with 120 titles, including Haunted House, Return To Haunted House, Demons To Diamonds, Missle Command, Pitfall! and Centipede. To check out the rest, click here.
Still want more? AtGames is also coming out with portable versions of these consoles, which have the added bonus of including a rechargeable battery and an SD card slot. Very cool, indeed.

Legendary Grimdark ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Artist John Blanche Has Passed Away at 78
In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war, but it was a cheerful illustrator from England who helped to define the terrifying war-torn imagery that inspired what we now know as Grimdark (a hybrid genre combining horror with sci-fi/fantasy).
Unfortunately for fans of Warhammer 40,000, Trench Crusade and countless other sources of Grimdark thrills, veteran artist John Blanche passed away this week after struggling with health issues for the past few years.
While the artist retired back in 2023, he leaves us with an enormous legacy of iconic artwork that continues to inspire gamers and storytellers around the world to this very day.
The news is especially gloomy as it was only last year that Daniel Lowman and Napoleon Dynamite himself Jon Heder released The Grim & the Dark: The Search for John Blanche, a documentary following Heder’s exploration of the Grimdark genre culminating in a heartwarming encounter with Blanche in his own home.
Below is one of my favorite pieces by Blanche, his highly influential depiction of Warhammer 40k’s God-Emperor of Mankind on his Golden Throne.
We send our deepest condolences to John Blanche’s family, friends, and fans.
