Paradise Lost

Written in 1667, Milton’s epic poem revolves around the fall of man and the classic battle of good vs. evil, telling along the way the story of Satan/Lucifer, the angel who tries to overthrow God, and the temptation of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The project tells the story of the epic war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, and will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D.

Untitled M. Night Shyamalan Movie

Bradley Cooper would play a father on a desperate search for his missing child. It might stray into Taken terrain, but the father taps into some supernatural powers to aid the search.

Here There Be Monsters

A movie about Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones — except with sea monsters.

Cooper would play real-life Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, albeit a much-younger Jones, well before he had famously “not yet begun to fight” the Brits. After he’s stripped of his British naval commission, Jones is hired by a shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of merchant ships in the North Atlantic, which are used as toothpicks by a giant squid.”

The star would play “David Underwood”, an investment banker who finds himself mixed up in a major government conspiracy – one that’s life changing. His world unravels when he is accidentally delivered an audio casette which reveals the government’s complicity in an alien plot to breed with human chromosomes.

Bradley Cooper To Battle Giant Squid In ‘Here There Be Monsters’?

House of Wax, Unknown and Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra is in negotiations to take control of the long-gestating Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. co-production of Here There Be Monsters, a Brian Helgeland script which Vulture has also just learned will be offered to Bradley Cooper to star as its leading man.

If all goes to plan, “Cooper would play real-life Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, albeit a much-younger Jones, well before he had famously “not yet begun to fight” the Brits. After he’s stripped of his British naval commission, Jones is hired by a shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of merchant ships in the North Atlantic, which are used as toothpicks by a giant squid.

Collet-Serra is hardly the first high profile director to naval gaze on the project. Last July, it was Robert Zemeckis. Then, back in February, we reported that Brad Bird had been flirting with the project, but he too ultimately passed. Now Vulture reports that Collet-Serra has been brought aboard to ready the script for an early 2013 start — essentially, allowing production to begin on Monsters the moment Cooper finishes filming Legendary Pictures’ most pressing concern, the third Hangover film.

Collet-Serra is still attached to Akira, although that appears to be entering development hell. READ MORE

Legendary Pictures Pulls Plug On ‘Paradise Lost’

The legendary battle between good and evil has been postponed… this time it’s forever.

After a start date bump back in December, Legendary Pictures has officially pulled the plug on Alex Proyas’ big-budget adaptation of John Milton’s 17th-century poem Paradise Lost due to budget issues, says Variety.

Bradley Cooper, Ben Walker, Casey Affleck, Djimon Hounsou, Rufus Sewell, Camilla Belle, Diego Boneta and Callan McAuliffe were slated to star in the film, which Legendary initially pushed from January to June.

Insiders close to the production told Variety that while Proyas’ vision of the movie was great, the technology wasn’t quite there, and the filmmakers couldn’t reduce the budget enough to satisfy Legendary.

Vincent Newman was set to produce Paradise Lost with Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Project was designed to showcase eye-popping aerial warfare, and Warner Bros. was onboard to distribute.

Decision frees up the schedules of its stars, who are expected to be in high-demand — particularly Cooper and Walker. READ MORE

UPDATED: ‘The Crow’ Hires A New Writer And Director!

UPDATED: The Crow Hires A New Writer And Director!

Updated 6:05PST – F. Javier Gutierrez (Before The Fall) has been hired to direct. Press release below the jump.

Yesterday I posted an article about the upcoming remake of The Crow.

A press release had stated, “The lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company concerning THE CROW has been amicably settled out of court, and the parties will continue to work on the film together as planned.

At the end of the article I speculated that since the project didn’t have a writer (or director) that it could still be a long way off. Well, it appears that Relativity and TWC have hit the ground running after settling this legal business because a writer has now been hired – Jesse Wigutow.

Per Deadline, “Jesse Wigutow is making a deal to write the script. The original was distributed by the Weinsteins at Miramax back in 1994 and grossed $50.6M domestic. Wigutow has ‘Irreparable Harm’ set up at HBO Films, just rewrote Robert Ludlum’s ‘The Osterman Weekend’ for Summit, and has ‘Age Inappropriate’ with Offspring at Universal. He recently scripted a Steve McQueen biopic for Cross Creek’s’ Brian Oliver, based on the book Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel.

So there’s that! Perhaps this thing gets rolling sooner rather than later, though I’m not really looking forward to it. READ MORE

Lawsuit For The Crow Settled, Now All they Need Is A Movie

It now looks like, after something like 5 or 6 steps back, we might be one step closer to that remake of The Crow.

According to press release, “The lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company concerning THE CROW has been amicably settled out of court, and the parties will continue to work on the film together as planned. In addition, Relativity Media has dismissed all of its claims against The Weinstein Company for any wrongdoing regarding the release and distribution of NINE, and The Weinstein Company has dismissed all of its claims against Relativity Media.

Now all they need is a director, an approved script, and a cast. Here’s to 2014! Just kidding, there’s a slight chance this could still hit in 2013. READ MORE

Ballooning Budget Halts ‘Paradise Lost’ Production

Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures has halted plans to begin production early next year on Paradise Lost, the epic-sized Alex Proyas-directed film about the battle between good and evil that is inspired by the John Milton poem.

Bradley Cooper had been set to play Lucifer, Benjamin Walker to play the archangel Michael, and Diego Boneta playing Adam and Camilla Belle Eve, with a host of other actors lined up for the action epic.

The site reports that that the film isn’t scrapped; rather, Legendary’s Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and producer Vincent Newman will continue developing it to rework a budget that had passed the $120 million mark by 10% or 15%. The picture has crewed up for an Australia shoot and the talent and below the line is learning about the postponement right now.

In the case of Paradise Lost, there is so much green screen work and VFX that the budget looked to be getting unwieldy. They will try to rework those costs and possibly get the film into production by the late spring or early summer. READ MORE

There really weren’t that many ups and downs,” the actor said. “We were talking about doing it because of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who I was such a massive fan of. And timing didn’t work out. Then, he just dropped out of it also, so I don’t know what they’re doing to do.

Check out some previously released concept art for The Crow. The movie is based on James O’Barr’s legendary comic of the same name. Brandon Lee was the first to play Draven in Dimension//Miramax’s 1994 The Crow.

Benjamin Walker vs. Bradley Cooper in ‘Paradise Lost’

Legendary Pictures is negotiating with Benjamin Walker to play the archangel Michael in Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost, the action epic battle between good and evil that is inspired by the John Milton poem, reports Deadline.

Walker, who just wrapped the title role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, will go mano a mano against Bradley Cooper’s Lucifer in the war that began all wars. After being cast out of Heaven, Lucifer mounts an army that battles the forces of good, and the film will have cutting-edge visual effects that will make these battles resemble 300 meets Lord of the Rings — but with winged warriors.

There are three major battle set pieces, Proyas said. One that takes place in Heaven, another in Hell, and a third in Eden.

Production will begin in January in Sydney.

UPDATED: Lawsuit Stops ‘Crow’ Remake From Taking Flight?

As if the franchise wasn’t already tainted with the untimely death of an actor and the lingering stench of Edward Furlong’s post-American History X career desperation, it now appears that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s remake of The Crow might not be soaring onto screens anytime soon.

The Weinstein Company is bringing Relativity Media to court over a distribution dispute, claiming that they have “a written contract signed by everybody” that gives the Weinsteins worldwide rights to the film (they distributed the original through Miramax in 1994). Their side of the story is that Relativity head honcho Ryan Kavanaugh is shopping around rights to other parties, though Kavanaugh has yet to respond as of this writing.

I’d like to think that the two companies can work it out, though we’re talking about two mega-producers with inflated egos that are no strangers to lawsuits. With a director and potential star in place, this is the perfect time for the Weinsteins to step in and raise hell; they just want a piece of the pie. Relativity has had way too much momentum as of late to let this project go by the wayside. Of course, stranger things have happened.

As of now, The Crow is still scheduled to shoot in the fall for a 2012 release.

Guess Who May Play Eric Draven in ‘The Crow’ Reboot?

Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, Case 39, A-Team) is in early negotiations to star in Relativity’s remake of The Crow, being directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, writes THR.

In the adaptation of the gritty black-and-white indie comic by artist James O’Barr, “Cooper will play a rock musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancée from thugs. He is resurrected by supernatural forces and seeks revenge.” The role was originally played by Brandon Lee, who was killed by a freak accident during production in 1993.

Relativity is flying fast with Crow, with Fresnadillo only officially boarding the project a week ago. The Spanish director of 28 Weeks Later is said to have met with Cooper in Spain recently, where the two hit it off and shared a vision for the character and the film.

Relativity would not confirm the talks but sources say Cooper, currently in theaters in Relativity’s hit thriller Limitless, is keen to board the project.

Production is targeted to start in the fall.
