With the Charlemagne project, Lee has released two heavy metal albums (check out “The Bloody Verdict of Verden” below).

[OMFG] Tim Burton’s Original ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Poem, As Narrated By Christopher Lee!!!

With the holidays looming upon us, we look back at Halloween with our heads down knowing that it’ll be another year before we can trick or treat again. And while everyone focuses their attention on ol’ Santa Claus, us horror fans typically focus our attention on the classic The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The 1993 stop-motion animated classic was based on Tim Burton’s 1982 poem, and before that inception, Disney has wanted to develop Jack Skellington and his Halloween Town into a short film or TV Christmas special, but feared it was too scary for kids.

Making the viral waves this very morning is a wonderful “The Nightmare Before Christmas” animated short as narrated by the great Christopher Lee! The short features many variations from the final film product, which ones do you spot? READ MORE

[BD Review] Steve Says ‘The Face of Fu Manchu’ is a Forgotten Classic

Reviewed by Steve Urena

When horror enthusiasts think back on classic horror films, they think of icons such as Dracula, The Mummy, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and The Wolf Man. Often absent from these classic figures in horror is the evil Asian genius known as the Fu Manchu. Yes, that Fu Manchu that is responsible for the popular style of facial hair.

Created by English novelist Sax Rohmer, Fu Manchu is not your typical villain. Most figures seen in classic horror are brutish monsters that attack their prey by hunting them down one by one. The Fu Manchu is nothing more than man but his character is quite complex, as his plans have more elaborate consequences, leading to a bigger picture. 1965 marks the motion picture debut of this master of melancholy in the film The Face of Fu Manchu.

The story begins with the supposed execution of the Fu Manchu. Tried for his crimes against his people and the world, the Fu Manchu is sentenced to death by beheading. Though it seems that the Fu Manchu and his reign of terror has concluded, eager British detective Nayland Smith still senses the Fu Manchu’s presence. Smith investigates the situation further and reveals that the Fu Manchu is alive and well and that he has brought his operations to a secret base underneath the river Thames. The Fu Manchu kidnaps the world renowned Professor Muller to uncover the key to using the seeds of a rare Tibetan flower for world domination. It’s a race to stop the Fu Manchu and his evil ways, but this movie delivers in action and drama.

I won’t spoil the end but I suggest everyone take a look at this movie as it is a forgotten classic. This villain is smart and ruthless and is very meticulous in his planning. Everything is planned perfectly. I like a villain that uses his brain over his brawn. He manipulates his followers with hypnosis and gets them to do his bidding. The only gripe I have with the character is that the actor playing Fu Manchu isn’t Asian. I’m sure in the 60s it might have been a problem to feature an Asian lead, but I for one would like to see a reboot of this character as I believe it could be a big hit if done correctly. I recommend this movie to lovers of the horror genre as it brings forth a different take on the horror genre. Check it out and beware the reign of the FU MANCHU!

[BD Review] ‘The Wicker Man’ Companion Piece ‘The Wicker Tree’

Whether you consider it ‘The Citizen Kane of Horror Films’ or something that is a genre unto itself, The Wicker Man is an undeniably unique folk tale with dark humor, songs, sex, and an ending that completely bypassed being just “great” and dives headfirst into legendary status. Kickstarting a renewed fascination with pagan festivals – Burning Man and Beltane, among others – and old world charms, Robin Hardy and Anthony Shaffer’s occult mystery is more about the power of religion as a means for brainwashing and manipulation rather than its cinematic portrayal of beliefs, rituals and sacrifices. Plagued with distribution, editing, and production problems, the film persevered and gathered acclaim thanks to career-defining performances by Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, and an incredible amount of support from the Hammer actor.

In 2006, an unintentionally hilarious American remake came and went, along with a companion novel to the original film written by Hardy, entitled Cowboys for Christ. The book’s name is more suited for the adaptation, now named The Wicker Tree, because it hints at the playful and often ridiculous nature of the cult classic’s spiritual successor. READ MORE

Christopher Lee Talks ‘The Wicker Tree’ In This Clip From The DVD

On April 24th Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the Wicker Man companion piece, The Wicker Tree, on both Blu-ray and DVD. Set in the same universe as the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, the film is written and directed by the original helmer, Robin Hardy, who also reunited with the original producer Peter Snell and venerable UK production company British Lion to bring a chilling new vision of this classic story to 21st century audiences, after a theatrical run.

Now we have a clip from the behind-the-scenes featurette that features the performers, including Christopher Lee, talking about working with the film’s director Robin Hardy, who is no spring chicken himself.

Based on Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” “‘The Wicker Tree’ tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, “The Bill,” “Skins” ), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish, Rambo, the upcoming The Hobbit films). However, Beth’s and Steve’s message of personal chastity quickly comes into direct conflict with Tressock’s sexual and religious practices, drawing upon ancient Celtic beliefs and rituals. Temptations begin to challenge Beth and Steve with the stakes no less than their very lives and souls…READ MORE
