New Creature Looms In ‘Dark Was the Night’

Caliber Media Co., Sundial Pictures and Preferred Content have started production on the talked-about thriller script, Dark Was the Night with lensing taking place this coming Sunday, February 19th.

Kevin Durand (Real Steel, Robin Hood) and Lukas Haas (Contraband, Inception) will star in and battle with a never-before-seen monster in director Jack Heller‘s upcoming horror feature. The script, from Tyler Hisel, appeared on the 2009 Black List of best un-produced scripts, a rarity for the monster genre, under the title “The Trees”.

‘Dark Was the Night’ centers on the isolated town of Maiden Woods, where a nearby logging company has disrupted the balance of the life in the woods. From the frozen forest, an evil will emerge and threaten the local citizens; their only hope being the local Sheriff and his trusted Deputy.

Rounding out the cast are Sabina Gadecki, Heath Freeman and Nick Damici (Stake Land).

Respectful to the success of vampire and zombie movies, we were immediately attracted to Tyler’s all-new monster mythology,” said producer Dallas Sonnier. READ MORE

[Random Cool](?) ‘Presidential Monsters’ Action Figures

[Random Cool](?) Presidential Monsters Action Figures

This weekend I stumbled across something pretty hilarious at my local toy store. From Heroes in Action Toys comes Presidential Monsters, a series of toys that cross history and horror. They’re hands down the most idiotic things I have ever seen, and yet I find myself wanting them all. I guess they win? Yeah, yeah, they do…

As pictured above and below, now available at the official website are the following: Lincolnstein, Zom-Bush, The Ron-My, Monster from the Watergate Lagoon, Baracula, Wolf Bill, and Phantom of the White House.

Check out hi-res images of the entire line after the break. READ MORE

Guillermo del Toro Filming Giant Robot Warehouse

roboto1122811 Guillermo del Toro Filming Giant Robot Warehouse

In an interview with io9, director Guillermo del Toro revealed a pretty sweet little tid-bit about his now filming Pacific Rim, which will pit giant robots against massive monsters.

We’re at the end of our second week. We are shooting everything for the main complex in the movie, which is a huge complex in Hong Kong where the robots are maintained. We are doing that, while building downtown Hong Kong streets.

Small news, but still pretty amazing considering that it sounds practical.

Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff star in the film battling the summer boxoffice May 10, 2013. READ MORE

Gary Busey, Farting Cows and Hundreds of ‘Piranha’!

Gary Busey, Farting Cows and Hundreds of Piranha!

The best part about films casting a bunch of oddball ex-stars is that they’ll talk to any press about their roles without conscious. Meaning, they’ll reveal everything if you ask nicely. Such the case with Gary Busey, who stars in Dimension Films’ Piranha 3DD. Re-teaming Feast director John Gulager with writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, we were expecting awesomeness on this level:

I play a farmer,” Busey tells Empire Magazine. “A cow explodes because of its farting ability and out of it come hundreds of piranha, raining down on me. You’ll see how I treat one of them.

If that’s just a tease of how weird things get in Piranha 3DD it makes me think they took the sequel in the correct direction. Piranha 3D took itself way too serious. Point: David Hasselhoff stars in this one…. READ MORE

Meet ‘I, Frankenstein’s’ Gargoyle Queen

Chuck star Yvonne Strahovski, who also toplined the horrid The Canyon, is in final negotiations to join I, Frankenstein, the action monster movie starring Aaron Eckhart, writes Heat Vision. Miranda Otto, best known for playing Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings movies, also is on board.

Stuart Beattie is directing the Lakeshore/Lionsgate movie, which follows Frankenstein’s monster (Eckhart) vacillating between humanity and monsterdom while being pursued by demons wanting to gain the secret of his reanimated corpse.

Strahovski will play the female lead, a scientist working on reanimating the dead and tricked into working for demons seeking to create an army of the undead.

Otto is playing the queen of the gargoyles who wants to help Frankenstein.

Bill Nighy is already in negotiations to play the leader of the demons while Socratis Otto (no relation to Miranda) is his right hand man.

The movie, based on a comic by Kevin Grevioux, is due to shoot this winter in Australia.

Australian actress Otto also starred in the pilot for “Locke & Key”, which adapted the Joe Hill comic book. READ MORE

New Line Punching Walls Seeking ‘Rampage’ Writer

New Line Punching Walls Seeking Rampage Writer

It was announced back in April that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. would be teaming to bring an adaptation of the classic arcade/NES game Rampage to the big screen.

Heat Vision reports tonight that John Rickard, who has acted as a co-producer on a wide range of New Line movies from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination 5 to Horrible Bosses and next year’s tentpole Jack the Giant Killer, will produce and is meeting with writers to develop a story for the project. His resume does NOT impress me.

The game comes from Midway Games, which was acquired by New Line’s sister company Warner Bros. in 2009 for $33 million.

The concept of the game revolves around a trio of mild-mannered humans who are mutated into a giant lizard, a werewolf and a gorilla – Godzilla, Wolf Man and King Kong, respectively – and fight the military while destroying buildings. Players controlled the monsters and moved up levels when a city was destroyed.

The studio believes that technology has advanced enough that the possibility exists to make a smartly-budgeted monster movie in the vein and tone of Ghostbusters and Independence Day. READ MORE

Ron Perlman Joins Del Toro’s “Realistic” ‘Pacific Rim’ Battle!

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is about to embark on his largest endeavor of his career – literally and figuratively. Del Toro is back behind the camera (as of Monday) for Pacific Rim, a giant monster vs robot movie that will star Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, and now Ron Perlman (pictured inside). Perlman has starred in del Toro’s Hellboy, Hellboy II, Blade II and Cronos.

In speaking with Wired, he also revealed his intent for Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures’ enormous battle — to make it completely realistic: “It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters,” said del Toro. “We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc.

In theaters May 10, 2013, the pic is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. READ MORE

‘Underworld’ Vamp Plays Demon Prince in ‘I, Frankenstein’

Underworld Vamp Plays Demon Prince in I, Frankenstein

Lakeshore Entertainment is keeping a strong relationship with actor Bill Nighy (pictured above) as he’s in negotiations to play the baddie once again in I, Frankenstein, while Australian thesp Socratis Otto (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is set to co-star as one of his evil henchmen, says Variety.

Aaron Eckhart toplines the pic, which Lionsgate is on board to distribute in the U.S. Stuart Beattie is directing from his own script, based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the Underworld franchise. Nighy starred in all three of the films for Lakeshore.

In I, Frankenstein, Eckhart stars as Adam, Frankenstein’s monster who is being hunted by demons that want to learn the secret of his creation in order to build an army of reanimated corpse demons. Nighy is in talks to play a demon prince. Otto will play his compatriot who is tasked with tracking down and capturing Adam.

Production is scheduled to start in January in Australia, with the pic skedded for domestic release on Feb. 22, 2013. READ MORE

Creatures Play MacGyver in Yet Another ‘Afraid of the Dark’ Clip

FilmDistrict continues to unload clip after clip from Troy Nixey’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (review) that’s sure to combine into the entire film by the time it hits theaters on August 26.

The latest piece of footage from the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror traps Sally in the bathtub when the creatures play MacGyver with a light switch. Don’t tell Sally, but all she has to do is turn the light back ON to scare away the little creatons.

The pic follows Sally, a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. Having stumbled upon the mansion’s hidden basement, Sally starts hearing voices calling out from the bolted ash pit, imploring her to open it. Sally obliges and unwittingly unleashes something so terrible, so unthinkable, that everyone’s life – hers most of all – is placed in immediate and grave danger.

Japan Disaster Forces ‘Pacific Rim’ Rewrite, Studio Wants Del Toro for ‘Godzilla’

Editor’s Note: I’d like to use this story as a platform to invite you to donate to help Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief.

Update: AICN is attempting to debunk us, but unfortunately their sources are either wrong or lying. We stand behind our report as our sources are well in the know. This isn’t just some “tipster”. It’s also worth noting Del Toro has been asked to make the change, and whether or not he complies has yet to be seen….

Bloody Disgusting has learned of some interesting news regarding Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s Pacific Rim, their giant monster movie that Guillermo del Toro agreed to direct about 10 days ago.

According to our sources, Legendary has asked Del Toro to re-write the screenplay so that no attacks take place in Japan. The pic is to be set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

In addition, early rumors continue to carry some truth. Apparently Del Toro has been asked (again) to turn Pacific Rim into the new Godzilla. He refused. Expect this to be a regular occurrence as it sounds like Legendary would much rather get the giant green monster back in theaters than Rim. What’s interesting is that Monsters director Gareth Edwards was attached to Godzilla back in January…

Giant food for thought.

Leaked Plot Details for Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’!

Spoiler-filled plot details have leaked for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Pacific Rim, which Guillermo del Toro has official come aboard to direct.

The following comes courtesy of News in Film, even though the screenplay is being retooled: “In alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is “The Anteverse,” another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our ocean’s surface.

Since the first attack, the rim has been “spitting out” a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the “Jaeger” program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry….” Continued inside.
