Caitlín R. Kiernan Brings On ‘Alabaster: Wolves’

Caitlín R. Kiernan is known for her outstanding work in dark fantasy/scifi fiction, but she also dabbles in horror comics like the Sandman spinoff The Dreaming. Not to mention a few hundred other stories…Dark Horse announced today that Kiernan will be kicking off her first ongoing title this April, Alabaster: Wolves, which focuses on a female teen who has been battling monsters for as long as she can remember. No, this is not some sweet teen fiction, it’s dark, gruesome, and epic as can be. Check out more details from Dark Horse below.

Preview: The Strain #3

Yes, vampires are popular, they are currently all over pop culture, and there’s a lot of trashy teen stories working to give them a bad name. Thankfully, we still have creators like Lapham and Huddleston (with a little help from del Toro) to restore our faith in the fanged immortal. The Strain is shaping up to be another stellar vampire comic, one that delves deep into the mythology and lore we all know and love. Check out the preview for issue #3 down below.

Review: Creepy #7

Uncle Creepy has done it again! That sounded less dirty in my head, but nonetheless, he has. The 7th issue of Creepy has just dropped, with their usual brilliant hybrid of a homage to vintage scares, paired with a few laughs. This masterfully illustrated black-and-white anthology gives a subtle tip of the hat to classic horror comics, and provides a dripping sarcasm at which one can’t help but chuckle. Creepy is one of those books that goes largely unnoticed, even by horror fans, and it’s a big shame. This anthology collects some of the most outright disturbing stories out there with throwbacks to classic horror tales. Creepy is an anthology every one of you should be reading, it pays it’s dues to the past and continues to bring bloody goodness into the present with some shocking shorts. The black and white artwork captures the mood of the book perfectly. So check out the preview and then kick yourself for not having read it all along.

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK – The Strain #2

Happy New Year! After a brief two-week break, I’m back with a gut full of food and an ambitious mind for the coming year. Why not kick it off with my very first Pick of the Week for 2012?

Last month Lapham and Huddleston began their engrossing, rich tale of vampire mythology, which spans across decades. The full scale of the mythos is yet to be revealed, but the repercussions of letting the vampire plague loose in the current century are starting to surface. Ephraim finds himself in the midst of something far more horrific than he could ever imagine, and his troubles are only beginning. Issue #2 delves further into the mystery of flight 753 and ups the dramatic tone several notches. Lapham is taking his time planting all the seeds for a deliberately paced narrative that showcases his ability to craft a story-driven book that dwindles in the back of your mind. Lapham and Huddleston make a wonderful team, truly capturing the enchanting air of vampire lore, and issue #2 confirms the hopes The Strain will be a great story that restores faith in the blood sucking subgenre.

OMFG: Preview: The Strain #2

David Lapham continues his vamp-tastic adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s epic novel series in the new year. The debut issue of The Strain was a massive hit and left readers demanding more. The first issue gave us a glimpse into the eerie mythos of del Toro’s vampire world, offering incredible character development, and left things on the cusp of destruction for our hero. Hopefully, in the second issue we will see a bit more of that tall gangly dude and his creepy cane. Check the 6-page preview after the jump courtesy of Dark Horse. Read on for the skinny…

Angel & Faith Meet A Celeb Vampire

The surprisingly fun Angel & Faith continues next week with issue #5 and the teen melo-vamp-drama can only go up from here. Perhaps when the series began a few months back, readers had their doubts as to whether an Angel and Faith comic would really satisfy anyone. It’s clear now that this series is better than anyone could have imagined. It’s fun, it’s whimsical, and it includes vampires without trying to be “the next big thing”. Any fan of Angel or Buffy will dig this book. Check the preview after the jump.

[Review] The Strain #1

The Strain is based on a series of vampire novels written by none other than the cinematic master Guillermo del Toro, and Chuck Hogan. Anyone who knows del Toro’s work knows his love for horror comics, and it’s about time one of his works were adapted to comics. Fittingly so, David Lapham takes the honors of adapting the tale with Mike Huddleston by his side on art duties. The story begins in the past as an old grandmother tells her grandson the tall tale of a spooky giant who will come to get him if he doesn’t eat his greens, swiftly switching right into the present. Somehow, some way, the past and present are interconnected, and some age-old evil is about to show its heinous face. A vampire story from the mind of del Toro that mixes folklore into the present day; sounds like a winner, right? Well, it reads like one too. Read on for the skinny…

These groundbreaking new books are still selling out all over the world, and I see no slowing in pace anytime soon.
