[Review] ’11-11-11′ Isn’t ‘Much of a Movie’

 [Review] 11 11 11 Isnt Much of a Movie

Hitting theatres today is Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11, a religious horror film centered around today’s date and divination by numbers. Lucky for Bousman, he got the film out today – which I think is pretty neat, even if it’s only in limited release – but, according to our own Evan Dickson, “In a movie with problems this big, normally huge things like dialogue and performance seem like nitpicking. It all comes down to story. If every scene has the same static objective and if 90% of your scenes end with your characters in the same emotional and narrative place with which they began – you don’t have much of a movie.

Yikes.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sort of intrigued by the premise (I’m always up for religious horror, if only to see if the film at hand is one of the few that ACTUALLY WORK), but maybe I shouldn’t be so bummed it didn’t make its way down to Orlando.

You can check out Evan’s review here and if you’re in one of the select cities it’s playing in, don’t forget to tell all of B-D what you thought.

Curiosity quickly turns to obsession, and Joseph soon realizes that this number holds a horrific meaning not only to himself but possibly to all of religion. While most of the cool stuff has been kept in secret, the Gates of Hell have finally been opened as we’ve landed a handful of demonic imagery (and behind-the-scenes pics) that can be enjoyed after the break.

‘True Blood’s Stephen Moyer Meets The Devil in ‘The Barrens’

“True Blood” star Stephen Moyer, who also just co-starred in The Caller, is locked to topline Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Barrens, which concerns the legend of the Jersey Devil, says Variety.

Described in the vein of spooky Stephen King tales such as “The Shining,” pic is being produced by The Genre Company and will be released next fall by Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Moyer will play a man who takes his family on a camping trip to the more than 1 million acres of dense forest known as the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where he becomes convinced they’re being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.

The legend of The Jersey Devil has been passed along for hundreds of years, as the creature has risen from obscurity to take its place alongside the Loch Ness Monster, Big Foot and the Chupacabra.

Bousman told Variety that he wants to take the legend of The Jersey Devil “another step further. I don’t want to turn it into a cheesy creature feature. It’s about the characters for me, and having watched Stephen for years on ‘True Blood,’ I have no doubt he’s the right leading man.

Bousman is best known for directing three Saw sequels and Repo! The Genetic Opera. He recently helmed a remake of Mother’s Day and 11-11-11, which will be released on that date later this year.

Bousman Talks Haunted Location In ’11-11-11′

Shooting films in haunted locations is probably a lot more common than you think; hell, The Innkeepers was inspired by the experiences Ti West had while shooting House of the Devil. The stories behind them are always intriguing, as is the case with one of the houses used in Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11.

The location, found 40 minutes outside of Barcelona, had previously been rented out for “sex parties” a la Eyes Wide Shut. Bousman passed on it the first time, getting an eerie feeling from the place, but returned a second time only to find secret rooms and more occult symbolism throughout the house. But, the most chilling thing about this visit was that he finally learned the house’s history, which deals with a Spanish Marquis, his brother, and a missing daughter whose death was chalked up to occult sacrifice.

Check Bousman’s blog for the full story, along with some nifty set photos, and watch a video of their first location walkthrough after the jump.

The Jersey Devil Is Living in ‘The Barrens’

With Cannes just a round the corner all sorts of projects are being announced in hopes of pre-selling their budget. Having a name like Darren Lynn Bousman never hurts. While previously announced, we now have the first ever details on Bousman’s forthcoming “Jersey Devil” horror flick The Barrens, which smartly sounds like it delves into the production model of Insidious:

Despite their reluctance, Richard Marlow takes his wife Cynthia, their young son Danny, and his teenage daughter Sadie to the Pine Barrens for a long weekend of camping and family bonding. As they arrive at the Wharton State Forest, a mutilated deer runs out into the road, nearly colliding with the Marlows’ car. Later that evening, another bloodied animal falls from a tree. Bad turns to worse when, in the middle of the night, a college boy camping nearby disappears into the woods. Nevertheless, Richard presses the family to hike further into the forest, to the spot where he used to camp with his father. He is feverish and a past wound on his arm appears badly infected, but when it begins to rain, there is no turning back. Richard’s sickness soon becomes debilitating, his headaches turn to hallucinations. What’s worse, he believes there is something stalking them…something with yellow eyes, pointed horns, and the wings of a bat – THE JERSEY DEVIL. The disfigured bodies of the missing camper and another college boy soon turn up. The Marlows must fight for their lives as the horrifying answer reveals itself in a shocking and tragic conclusion.

You can check out some sales art inside from the creature feature written and directed by man behind Saw II-IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Mother’s Day and the forthcoming 11-11-1.

Wanna Play Show & Tell? I’ll Show You a Clip From ‘Mother’s Day’ and You Tell Me What You Think!

I hope you’re excited, because I am! Anonymously showing up in my inbox this morning was an exclusive leaked clip (probably in preperation for EFM this week) from Darren Lynn Bousman’s hotly anticipated Mother’s Day!

The scene, which I like to cal “Show & Tell”, features a tense moment between Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) and the tied up Daniel Sohapi (Frank Grillo). “Now its time for show and tell,” exclaims Mornay. “I am gonna show, and you ARE gonna tell.” The moment continues as she pushes deep into Daniel’s past, burning a photo of his dead son before giving a partygoer a little alcohol bath (yikes!)

The clip then evolves into a montage of footage featuring stars Jaime King, Deborah Ann Woll, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Shawn Ashmore, Matt O’Leary, Lyriq Bent, Lisa Marcos, Patrick Flueger, AJ Cook, J. LaRose, and Warren Kole.

In the thriller arriving in theaters April 1, three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Mother ingeniously orchestrates her sons’ escape, teaching the house’s new owners and their guests a few lessons along the way.

I’m currently shooting ’11-11-11′ and I find out things like the rest of the community,” Bousman told us when we checked in on the clip. “I wake up every morning hoping to see a trailer or a poster, or something else. I am as in the dark and frustrated as you are. I hope we see movement soon. I really feel its my best film and I want people to see it.

Latest ’11-11-11′ Blog Tells of Mysterious Illnesses

Shooting is close to wrapping in Spain on Darren Lynn Bousman’s religious horror flick 11-11-11, but not before he can squeeze in another blog or two. This morning he updated his official website with a list of “odd occurrences” that he found chilling, before throwing in a creepy story about a “ghost sighting”. He swears there’s no viral intent and that this is for realz. I believe it.

The more of these blogs I write, the more I begin to question my own sanity for writing them. I am at a point now where I am beginning to censor myself, because I feel that no one will believe the words i am writing,” he explained.

I, personally, have yet to see anything `unexplainable,’ but we have had some very upsetting injuries.

-The first night at the house, the second AD, Leo, fell while walking to set and broke his ankle…

-The script supervisor, Joana had to go to the hospital the second night in the house after falling violently ill.

-Last week, Jota (on set props) was standing still during a take when a light suddenly fell from the ceiling, hitting him on the head…

-Two hours after my parents arrived at the location, my dad became very ill and spent the remainder of the day back at the hotel throwing up…

But the truly cool story begins when, “About four days ago, one of the producers on the film came down to video village… He stood there for a couple of minutes… White as a sheet… After a long and uncomfortable silence, one of the crew members said, ‘What?’” Want to know what he saw? Click here for the full blog that also features some really cool behind-the-scenes photos.
