“The Walking Dead“ opened its third season Sunday with a staggering 10.9 million viewers for its initial 9 o’clock telecast and 15 million for the night, reports Variety.

For the first time, AMC’s zombie skein aired without Dish Network carrying the cabler, and therefore eliminating another potential 14 million viewers the opportunity to watch.

Sunday’s premiere compares to the 7.3 million who tuned in to the first telecast of the season two premiere last October and the 9 million for the season finale in March.

I have all of “The Walking Dead” trade paperbacks and I’ve been reading them for years. I was a fan before AMC ever announced they’d be adapting Robert Kirkman’s tale of the undead for the small screen. I say this because I’m one of the harshest critics of the ongoing series, now entering its third season. I’ve taken a lot of heat from you dear readers for holding the producers accountable, so much so that my partner in crime even slapped my hand. But the fact of the matter is, I expect way more from the cabler responsible for such classics as “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men”.

“The Walking Dead” is the first major zombie series to hit TV, thus I understand where everyone is coming from. We want to be forgiving and give the show a pass. But as fans of horror you too should expect more. We’ve made it a record-breaking series, but it shouldn’t be rewarded for lazily limping by. They need to respect us and kick it up a notch. The ugly drama that went public last season was a sign that, whether you like it or not, there was something wrong with the show. And, as it turns out, AMC has worked diligently to fix it.

Last night AMC aired episode 03.01 “Seed“, the premiere episode that made me believe wholeheartedly that this is a new start. I am finally excited to see what comes each Sunday night. With that I want to reflect back on the season premiere and point out 6 things they did correctly that can take this show into a new era of awesome. READ MORE

It’s no secret that AMC’s road to the third season of their record-breaking zombie drama “The Walking Dead“ has been a rocky one. Us horror fans have been giving the series a major pass because, well, we’re just excited to have something to call “ours” on the small screen. While I’ve been one of the more vocal naysayers, it should be clarified that Robert Kirman’s comic series is one of my all-time favorites, and I expected a bit more from the team behind this adaptation (Season 2 spoiler: the fact that Carl doesn’t actually kill Shane obliterates his character and devolves him from becoming a broken young “man”). The behind-the-scenes chaos last season between showrunner Frank Darabont and AMC became got ugly when it became public – but to be fair, you can’t repair two seasons of damage overnight.

With that I lead into tonight’s Season 3 premiere. A new start. A new beginning. This is the first time AMC and the filmmaking team are on the same page. Early word has been incredibly strong. Thus, it’s hard to imagine that anyone here isn’t excited to see the undead rise back on their televisions (unless, of course, you have Dish).

As I write this, Rick and co. should be arriving to the prison complex and setting up what should be the definitive turning point in this franchise. With the introduction of Michonne and The Governor there’s a lot to look forward to. But let’s just start right here, right now. Take it one day at a time. “The Waking Dead” Showrunner Teases Potential Movie Prequel

Back on August 13 we told you exclusively that AMC was planning a “The Waking Dead“ feature film, based on the Robert Kirkman comic series that also spawned the popular show now entering its third season.

This afternoon TVLine shared a video interview (where they hilariously use the terms “thrill ride” twice) with showrunner Glenn Mazzara (and the cast) who revealed that a prequel movie could be in the works. The interview is a bit playful, so take what he says with a small grain of salt. With that said, you should expect a movie if the show continues to break records.

“The way I look at this prison is when the outbreak happened there was a zombie movie that took place in a prison,” explains Mazzara. “One day maybe well go back and film that movie, and now our guys come in and they’re sort of the sequel to what happened. So there are survivors in that prions, damage in the prison,” he continues. “So walkers keep coming in, its never safe. They fooled themselves into thinking the farm was safe. From the jump they know this prison is not safe.”

Speaking on the popular Governor, played by David Morrissey, he adds, “You will not have to wait long to meet [him].”

“The Walking Dead” returns October 14 only on AMC (and not Dish!).

‘The Walking Dead’s’ Michael Rooker Shows Interest In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Film

Rooker, who has already stared in two James Gunn films, Slither and Super, was rumoured to have been interested in playing the role of Rocket Racoon in Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. CBR asked the actor about the rumor, to which he replied, “Of course I would, are you serious? God, I’d love to. You know what, I’ve already done two projects with James Gunn and it’s an awesome project, so who would not want to be a part of that?” When asked about the role of Rocket Racoon, Rooker didn’t even know how the rumor was on the internet, but it’s clear that he would like to be in the film. Imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing… In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. One thing is for certain – the creature is hungry and the only prey left is human. Hypothermia is a classic monster movie in the tradition of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The story takes place in Maine in the dead of winter. Ray Pelletier and his wife Helen have been ice fishing the frozen expanse of Lake Noyade for over two decades but this year something is different: no fish bite. Is it their new neighbors on the ice — Stevie Jr. and his overbearing Dad — with their high-tech gear and over-sized rig that is driving the fish away? Or is it something else? The answer comes in an onslaught of ferocious attacks that unites the two families against a mysterious creature from under the ice.

More Ice Diving In Second ‘Hypothermia’ Clip

A family returns to their favorite winter getaway for some peaceful ice fishing little suspecting that they are about to become bait for a hideous underwater creature in Dark Sky Films’s Hypothermia, freezing up home video on October 2. A second clip has been released that drops more humans into the freezing water for the creature’s ice-cold snack.

“Ray Pelletier (Michael Rooker; “The Walking Dead,” Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Slither) is looking forward to a quiet weekend of ice fishing with his family at the same peaceful lake they’ve been visiting for years. Unfortunately for the Pelletiers, the obnoxious big-city father-son duo of Steve and Stevie Cote has picked the same weekend to spend at the remote frozen spot.

The fishermen quickly notice that the fish below the thick ice aren’t biting, and Ray thinks the Cotes’ state-of-the-art gear, including a loud ice drill, has scared them all away. But the two families’ petty squabbles are soon eclipsed by a much greater enemy: Something unnatural and ferocious is under the ice and its prey is human. It’s been an absolutely insane post-holiday news explosion, so we’re rounding up some fresh TV stories in this edition of News Bites.

Showtime has released a 4-minute long featurette that goes behind-the-scenes of “Dexter” Season 7, which premieres September 30. Here’s the synopsis for Episode 7.01: “Are You….?” “After witnessing her brother kill Travis Marshall, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) attempts to reconcile with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) while struggling to cover up their involvement with the murder. Meanwhile, Detective Mike Anderson has an unfortunate run-in, Quinn and Batista begin to make amends, and LaGuerta finds evidence that causes her to re-think the closed Bay Harbor Butcher case.”

The team behind AMC released a Social Network-style one-sheet for “The Walking Dead that celebrates their 10 million fans. In Season 3, premiering October 24, “Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company will face a brand new threat – one that is very much human. While Rick and the gang are busy clearing out a prison in the hopes of transforming it into a protective fortress, not so far away is the town of Woodbury, Georgia, and its self-appointed leader, the Governor (David Morrissey).”

Lastly comes a hi-res look at the “American Horror Story: Asylum“ promotional poster featuring the entire cast and crew. The new season premieres Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c. on FX. It’s no secret that Michael Rooker’s “Merle Dixon” is returning to AMC’s third season of “The Walking Dead”, and it looks like he’ll be joining the group of survivors headed by the notorious The Governor (played by David Morrissey). But a lot of people are wondering how he’s coping after losing a significant appendage. Spoiler TV got their hands on a pic that goes a little bit of the way towards answering that question.
