[Editorial] From Worst To Best: Tool

Tool is by no means meant for the casual listener. Their music defies traditional songwriting, dynamically surges from crushing distortion to soft beauty, plays with time signatures, bears some of the most interesting lyrics available, and doesn’t give a damn about song length to ensure radio play. Add to this list the band’s love of the occult and teasing fans with the possibilities that their lyrics and music hide a deeper meaning. Everything combined makes Tool one of the most challenging, well-respected and fascinating bands releasing music these days.

And so I decided that my love of the band should be used to rank their discography. Having listened to each album more times than I can count, I feel very comfortable in my decisions. Note that I am only doing the four full-length albums and I’m not including the Opiate EP nor the Salival release.

This is by no means an easy task. Having been a fan of Tool for more years than I can easily count, I realize that these albums each represent a different period of my life and I have certain memories associated with each one. Still, I’ll do my best to remain objective. So, join me below to find out my “From Worst To Best” with Tool. READ MORE

TOOL Drummer Danny Carey Talks Mandala Drum

TOOL/Volto drummer Danny Carey has been filmed playing with and talking about the Mandala drum, an electronic drum pad that has near infinite possibilities. Danny talks about how he uses the seven (!!!) pads in his live set-up as well as how he utilizes them to make the drums part of the music rather than just a simple beat. You can watch this video below.

Although no word has yet been released on a release date for a new TOOL album, it has been announced on the official TOOL website that writing is well underway. Knowing TOOL and their writing and release patterns, I’d say that the earliest we’re looking at a new album is the end of this year but more likely early to spring 2013.

Adam Jones Tweets Picture From New Tool Project

Adam Jones, guitarist of prog-rock giants Tool, recently tweeted a picture of a severed arm with TOOLBAND.COM watermarks covering the image. Upon looking at the official Tool website, it was written that this image was a production still for an upcoming “Tool Project” that is tentatively due in the fall. While no other information has been released, there are a couple of things that can be speculated upon:

1) It’s an image from a new music video, either for a track off of 10,000 Days or from the rumored new album that still has yet to enter recording.

2) It is part of the visuals that will accompany the new album, be it in the booklet or part of the marketing campaign.

What do you think readers? What do you make of this image?

10 Horror Games And The Bands That Should’ve Scored Them

Sometimes I get really bored. I’m only human, and like the rest of you, there are times when I need a little entertainment. During one of my recent fits of boredom where I was lying naked on the floor of my room in a sticky puddle of dried up Mountain Dew while staring up at the ceiling wondering what wordsmith came up with the word ‘orange,’ I decided to come up with a little game — something to fill my time so I didn’t have to finally concede to what the voices in my head were telling me to do. For the unaware, at Bloody Disgusting lies a mythical creature known as a Jonathan Barkan. He runs the music section on BD with a tyrannical fist and a sweet moustache. If I were reviewing Jon, his Baby Factor would go something like ”If Albert Wesker and a Big Daddy got together to make sweet, sweet love inside a record store, Jonny B would be their musically inclined offspring.”

All that is a long-winded way of saying he knows his music, and he also happens to share my love of video games. So let’s get back to the game I was teasing earlier. I gave Jon ten video game franchises and asked him who he thought would be best suited to score the soundtracks for that series. For example, if Akira Yamaoka had never joined Konami to craft the incredible scores the Silent Hill series is known for, who could’ve taken his place? Find out whom he chose for Silent Hill, as well as nine others, after the jump. READ MORE

Tool Drummer Danny Carey Hints At Band Entering Studio This Summer

Tool Drummer Danny Carey Hints At Band Entering Studio This Summer
Vic Firth has uploaded a three-part video interview with Tool drummer Danny Carey. In this interview, Carey discusses the songwriting of the band, his drumkit, his signature sticks, and more. He also drops a little nugget that he hopes the band will be entering the studio in June or July to begin the tracking process for the next Tool record. If that’s the case, don’t expect the album to be released until winter or even possibly spring 2013.

[Review] Meshuggah ‘Koloss’

 [Review] Meshuggah Koloss
There’s a saying in the metal community: “Your favorite bands listen to Meshuggah.” It’s a pretty accurate statement, considering that the band has been around for over 20 years. Hell, Tool had them as openers on two of their national tours, with Danny Carey stating that they are a source of inspiration to him.
So when a new Meshuggah album comes out, you better believe that it is seen as more than just a new album from a band. Rather, it’s seen as a crucible upon the metal scene. It is a point when the foundations of metal are challenged. But does Koloss bring this change or does it fall flat upon its face?

[Review] Soen ‘Cognitive’

 [Review] Soen Cognitive
When word came that Martin Lopez quit Swedish prog-metal band Opeth, I was stunned. After all, he brought a certain sound and inventiveness that I had come to appreciate and deeply enjoy. But when I heard of his new project Soen, I immediately had high hopes. The description and influences cited were more than enough to pique my interest. This sounded like a project where Lopez could take his skills and only expand on them. And with their debut release Cognitive, Soen aims to enter the progressive metal genre in a huge way.

Rest Your Eyes To This Piano Cover Of A Perfect Circle’s ‘Orestes’

While going through the Bloody-Disgusting Forums, I stumbled across a thread started by Anton Crowley which showed videos of Adam Monroe (keyboardist/backing vocals of ASHES dIVIDE) doing piano covers of Tool and A Perfect Circle songs. One of the videos was of my personal favorite track from Mer De Noms, Orestes. I used to play that track over and over again, so upon starting this cover, I was quite apprehensive. Would there still be the same eerily haunting beauty? Turns out the answer is yes. Check out the cover below and allow yourself to get a little lost. READ MORE

Ex Opeth Drummers Soen Releases Video For Savia
Soen, the band featuring ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, has released an official video for Savia, which comes off their upcoming debut album Cognitive. Directed by Patric Ullaeus (In Flames, Dimmu Borgir), the song definitely has some Tool-esque vibes while dipping its toes into heavier territory. Another song, Delenda, can be heard on their Facebook page. I’m definitely enjoying the songs and I’m really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album. Check out the video below.

[OMFG] Tool Songs Put Behind Horror Movie Scenes

Tool is one of those bands whose music fits perfectly with the horror genre. It’s intense, visceral, brooding, atmospheric, takes its time, and builds to violent climaxes. In short, each song is a journey and you better believe it’s not an easy one to take. That’s why I’m so fascinated with these fan-made videos below. They take the music of Tool and provide visuals from horror movies, creating an amazing relationship that works amazingly well. Below you can see Jambi mixed with Hellraiser as well as H mixed with Eraserhead. You can also check out 46 & 2 mixed with Pan’s Labyrinth here. Thanks to my friend Sway for the tip!

[Review] A Liquid Landscape ‘Nightingale Express’

aliquidlandscapenightingaleexpresscover [Review] A Liquid Landscape Nightingale Express

I’m a sucker for alternative prog-rock. There’s just enough heaviness to satisfy the metal head in me but there is also a vast amount of tones and effects to appeal to the audiophile in me. Seriously, it’s like I’m an addict and the only cure is more interesting and unique sounds. So when I did a bit of reading and checking into A Liquid Landscape, I was immediately intrigued. They cite influences such as Dredg, Porcupine Tree, Sigur Ros, Karnivool, People In Planes, Tool, and more. Talk about an impressive roster of bands to admire, right? But anyone can claim such bands influence them. The question is can they take those influences and make a unique final product? Is Nightingale Express an album that stands on its own merits? [Review] Puscifer Conditions Of My Parole
For as big a Tool and A Perfect Circle fan as I am, I just could not enjoy Puscifer’s V Is For Vagina. As a matter of fact, I flat out couldn’t stand it. So, when Conditions Of My Parole was announced, I met the news with a healthy dose of skepticism and, I’ll admit it, scorn. My interest became piqued when Maynard described it as “Twin Peaks in the desert”. Well, I just so happen to love Twin Peaks, so I found myself becoming more and more curious about the album. When Man Overboard came out, I couldn’t believe it. What a great song! I loved the feel, the atmosphere, the flow, the whole damn thing! Why, with this song, the whole album has to be just as good…right? Check after the jump for my answer.
