‘Leprechaun: Origins’ Plays Straight and Brutal in First Trailer

Leprechaun: Origins

WWE Studios and Lionsgate have given Bloody the first full trailer for Leprechaun: Origins, which stars wrestler Hornswoggle (Dylan Postl) as the title character (you can see that Lep is more of a clothes-less creature in the below screengrabs). The other news here is that it seems as though this film may not be getting a wide release since it’s scheduled to hit VOD on August 26th and DVD/Blu on September 30th.

Also starring Stephanie Bennett (Grave Encounters 2), Andrew Dunbar (Alien Trespass), Melissa Roxburgh (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days) and Brendan Fletcher (Freddy vs Jason), Leprechaun: Origins was written by Harris Wilkinson and directed by Zach Lipovsky.

My first impressions from this trailer? It’s played wayyyyyyyyy more straight than I would have thought. I mean this is a Leprechaun movie and it stars a guy named “Hornswoggle.” We’ll see when it comes out I guess!

Backpacking through the lush Irish countryside, two unsuspecting young couples discover a town’s chilling secret. Ben (Dunbar), Sophie (Bennet), David (Fletcher) and Jeni (Roxburgh) quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be when the town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Soon, the friends will find that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.

Special features on the home video releases include both the “Leprechaun: An Icon Reborn” featurette and “Leprechaun: Behind the Blood” featurette.

  • I LOVE how they don’t show the Leprechaun in the trailer, and the ‘American Werewolf in London’ inspiration.

  • Gerry Davie

    This actually looks pretty good.

  • Jim

I enjoyed the humor of 1 and 2, but I’m liking the darker and more serious tone of this. Color me intrigued.

  • HarryWarden

Horror is pretty much dead theatrically. Films like this would have gone theatrical not that long ago but now almost everything, regardless of quality, is going straight to VOD.

    • EvanDickson

      I disagree.

  • InvisiGhost

the others were just comical…good to watch for a laugh..this looks a little more dark..cant wait to laugh my ass off at this one too

  • ThunderDragoon

Wow, this actually looks pretty good. When I first saw that that wrestler was going to be the leprechaun, I thought it was going to be comedic. This actually might be good. We’ll see.

This looks awesome and creepy! I am really pissed they are not releasing this wide theatrically. I was looking forward to this being a fun end of summer horror movie on the big screen

  • Krug09

I am surprised at 3 things. 1 this is a dark version of the comical but entertaining original. 2. It actually looks like a decent movie. 3. They don’t show the Leprechaun in the trailer!

  • It’s no Warwick Davis Leprechaun movie, that’s for sure meaning I’m not as excited.

Still wondering how this ties into the original Leprechaun series. If it doesn’t, why would it be called origins?

  • Christopher Sharpe

I’m kinda excited for this. Big ol nostalgia feels.

  • Evan3

I’m not sure Leprechaun can work as a straight horror, but after Oculus, WWE has some rope to play with. I also bet the next trailer will be more goofy. After all, the poster shows the leprechaun with a handful of gold, and you can hear a nice mirthful EVIL laugh at the end of the trailer, so I doubt its as straight as the trailer is making it seem. More important, which one of these ladies is the next Aniston?
