‘S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl’ Update 2.0 Detailed Ahead of Launch [Trailer]

With the “Cost of Hope” expansion due out later this week, GSC Game World has dropped new details on the version 2.0 update that will launch alongside the expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Featuring a new version of the engine, a graphic overhaul, three types of binoculars, and much more, the announcement coincides with a new trailer.

For starters, Update 2.0 overhauls the Zone’s lighting and visuals. Players can expect a more natural and immersive look with more realistic shadows and reflections across the environment, both inside buildings and in underground locations. The landscapes and foliage have also been reworked to give a “more organic” feel to the Zone.

Players will also find more contested points of interest, including campfires, bus stops, and other locations where stalkers and mutants can cross paths. There are also several under-the-hood fixes address issues such as enemies shooting or throwing objects through walls and unexpected overpopulation in certain areas.

Update 2.0 introduces Custom Rules, allowing players to tailor the difficulty to their preferred playstyle. Adjust individual settings to create anything from a more forgiving survival experience to a truly hardcore challenge. Those looking for an even tougher experience can also try Master difficulty and the optional Expedition mode, previously introduced in earlier updates.

Three types of binoculars are now available to help stalkers scout the Zone, identify targets, and plan their next move. Each model features different technology and functionality. You’ll find them throughout the Zone or purchase them from certain traders.

Along with binoculars, the update also introduces four new weapons, with a unique variant of one of these weapons able to be discovered somewhere in the Zone:

  • Arev — assault rifle.
  • GP3A — designated marksman rifle.
  • SKP — designated marksman rifle.
  • Fora-230 — submachine gun.

Fog is now more than a weather effect — it is a gameplay mechanic. Both stalkers and their enemies have reduced visibility and hearing. The Light Rainy weather scenario has also received a visual overhaul to complement the updated environmental presentation.

And finally, for those wanting to get a summary of their activities in the game, there’s now a new Statistics page that has been added to the PDA, allowing stalkers to track their activity across the Zone.

As mentioned, Update 2.0 will launch for free alongside the “Cost of Hope” expansion on August 20. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available for PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG.com, the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.
