‘High Crimes’ is a Milquetoast Entry in the Ashley Judd Thriller Canon [Horror Queers Podcast]

Last month, we kicked off “Thanks for the Judds,” a six-week programming block of Ashley Judd thrillers, with Gary Fleder’s adaptation of James Patterson’s Kiss the Girls (listen), Stephan Elliott’s notorious flop Eye of the Beholder (listen), and the magnum opus of the Ashley Judd Thriller™ in Double Jeopardy (listen). Now, we’re entering the back half of the block with a look at Carl Franklin‘s (Devil in a Blue Dress) legal thriller High Crimes (2002), which sees Judd reunite with her Kiss the Girls costar Morgan Freeman.

In the film, defense attorney Claire Kubik’s (Ashley Judd) husband Tom (Jim Caviezel) is charged with the murders of nine unarmed civilians in a village in El Salvador 14 years prior. Thrust into the military legal system, Claire teams up with a seasoned military attorney (Morgan Freeman) to expose a cover-up and save Tom from life imprisonment.

Episode 406: High Crimes (2002)

Check your spouse for ambidexterity because it’s week four of “Thanks for the Judds”, a six-week programming block on Ashley Judd thrillers. Next up is Carl Franklin’s legal thriller (for real this time) High Crimes (2002).

Join us as we go all in on this Kiss the Girls reunion between Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman. It’s all rather workmanlike and features way too many characters and subplots, but for people who love a good legal thriller: it’s got the (predictable) goods.

Plus: baby Adam Scott, Judd’s extremely 2000s haircut and “post-Gen X” character, and the return of Joe’s game (a lot).

Coming Up Next: We’re continuing our “Thanks for the Judds” programming block with a look at 2004’s neo-noir Twisted, from director Philip Kaufman (1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers).
