The way a horror film opens up can set the tone for the whole movie, creating a sense of unease, dread, and palpable fear. Or it can let you know that you’re in for one helluva ride, that you’re about to embark on a cinematic roller coaster of fun and insanity! Either way, hopefully it leads to something really badass!
Below are a few of my favorite openings to horror movies. After you check them out, do me a favor and leave me a comment with some of yours!
The Fog
“11:55, almost midnight… Enough time for one more story…”
If you’re going to show me a ghost movie, starting it off with a ghost story is the PERFECT way to open the film! John Carpenter nailed the atmosphere of this movie by crafting a spine chilling opening that still raises the hair on my arms. And that background music? Terrifying!
