Clive Barker – The Thief Of Always
Yes, this is Barker’s kid’s book. I don’t care. This is still one of my favorite books of all time. I think I mentioned this before but I’ll tell the story again: When I was in elementary school, I didn’t eat lunch for a week so that I could save my lunch money to buy this book from the Scholastic Book Program. To this day, I will read it once a year and still derive as much joy as I did when I was a child.
However, reading it as an adult, there is a different terror that comes with the story. Instead of fearing for the life of young Harvey Swick, I realize how horrifying it must’ve been for his parents, to have lost their child for 31 years. I also understand how devastating that must’ve been for the parents of all of the children who were taken by the Holiday House. Age changes perspective, that’s all I’m going to say.
