13. Deckard’s apartment
That nerve-wracking scene at the end of Blade Runner, when Deckard returns to his apartment to fetch Rachael, owes everything to this eerie, pulsating ambient noise. And yet, if you asked me to compile a Most Soothing Sounds list, I’d put it on there, too! The ten-hour version makes a great white noise machine.
