15 Flavors Of Nope: Musician Meredith Yayanos’ List of Most Unsettling Sounds

2. Select Interludes from The Drift

In 2006, complexity and brutality got married and made this very scary baby. Avant-pop icon Scott Walker knew exactly what he was doing and had no fucks left to give in the wake of 9/11. Bravo! But The Drift is a bit like House of Leaves: while I consider both to be deeply moving, innovative works of art, I hesitate to recommend either to anyone. “Hey, man, ever considered throwing your vulnerable psyche into a bottomless existential pit of horrors? You know you want to!” Still, if you can hang with Thomas Ligotti, or you dig the concept of a Tom Jones-level crooner who’s into black-turtleneck-wearing-nihilism, this album may be RTYI. I thought about showcasing a clip of the infamous meat-punching song, “Clara“, but this particular moment, from “Cue”, is what broke my brain the first time I heard the record, so here you go! Have a nice day! (Then mebbe check out the end of “The Escape“, which, shared out of context, is more morbidly hilarious than anything else. “WHAT’S UP DOC?” (Tangent: who among you has watched Fulci’s New York Ripper? ?)
