The Haunted – The Dead Eye
I’ve been going through a phase where I can’t stop listening to this band, specifically the Peter Dolving albums. You see, many people think that metal vocalists growl just because they can. In some cases, that’s absolutely true. But when it comes to Dolving, he has actual singing talents, his lyrics are fantastic, and when he does the yelling/growling style, he actually sounds pissed. There is weight behind his words because you can feel the raw, uninhibited rage. Plus, it’s far more understandable, even when being yelled.
When it comes to The Dead Eye, the reason I recommend it to so many people is because it has something that many metal bands forget to inject into their music: a groove. These songs get so damn funky, in a metal way, that you can’t help but nod your head and tap your feet along.
Their later albums are accused of being “less metal” than this one and, honestly, I probably would have to agree. However, I don’t think they’d have the same kind of impact when getting introduced to metal. Start here, give it a few spins, and thank me later.
