We’ve reached our number one spot and it belongs to Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats: Two Adaptations by Sergio Martino & Lucio Fulci. This set was released by Arrow because of course it was.
As the title suggests, this wonderful double feature contains two films loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Black Cat.’ The first is Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key by director Sergio Martino. This may be my favorite title for a film ever. It’s very descriptive and I like that in a title. In all seriousness, the film is an excellent erotic thriller. Think Brian DePalma but with a cat. The special features are plentiful with my personal favorite being an interview with Martino.
The second film comes courtesy of the legendary Lucio Fulci. Fulci’s The Black Cat is basically a murder mystery in which the prime suspect is a cat. That sounds silly and at times it is, but it’s mostly awesome. Cat-centric horror is really an under appreciated sub-genre. This disc also contains a ton of special features including one from Chris Alexander formerly of Fangoria.
This release is pretty much the gold standard of double features. Here’s to hoping we see more like this going forward.
