10 Must-See Independent Horror Films of 2016

Baskin (IFC Midnight) – TBD

From the mind of up-and-comer Can Evrenol comes a visceral and terrifying trip to Hell. Turkish Hell, if we’re going to get specific. What starts out as a cop movie quickly turns into a nightmare as a group of police officers are called to a house that turns out to be the gateway to Hell. It was acquired by IFC Midnight back in September after it premiered at TIFF, but a release date has yet to be set for the United States (it premiered in Turkey on New Year’s Day). If you’re on the fence about this one, I would like to divert you back to my review where my only negative complaint was that it didn’t quite go as depraved as I would have liked. In that review, I wrote “I just think I’ve been desensitized to violence so seeing someone be forced to have doggy-style sex with a naked woman who sports a bloody ram’s skull for a head doesn’t qualify as ‘going there’ for me.” Baskin won’t be everyone’s cup o’ tea, but hardcore horror buffs should feel right at home.
