High Tension
This one is conflicting because the twist nearly ruins the movie (and for some people it does ruin the entire movie). It’s one of those endings that completely disregards everything that came before it and retcons the entire film. After spending the night outrunning a serial killer, Marie (Cécile de France) finally reaches her friend Alex (Maïwenn), who seems to be terrified of her. It is then revealed that Marie is in love with Alex. Not only that, but she is actually the serial killer she has been running from this entire time! Is this a clever twist or an audience cheat? I tend to believe the latter, but everyone has their own opinion!
Don’t Look Now
What can you say about the ending of Don’t Look Now? While the ending isn’t exactly a plot “twist,” it does come out of nowhere. Based on the short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier (who also wrote the short story that The Birds was based one), Don’t Look Now sees it’s lead character John (Donald Suterland) chasing a figure caped in a read rain coat down a dark alley. You see, the red-clad figure reminds him of his recently deceased daughter, who was wearing a red raincoat when she drowned. This figure is in fact a serial killer dwarf who has been plaguing Venice throughout the course of the film. She then proceeds to slit John’s throat, ending the film.
