Sleepaway Camp
Sleepaway Camp is an admittedly silly film, and this is mostly due to it’s campy, but incredibly shocking, ending (I’m legitimately surprised that homages to Desiree Gold’s Aunt Martha haven’t been more prevalent in drag culture). As many of you already know, Angela (Felissa Rose) is revealed to actually be her brother Peter (the real Angela died in the boating accident that opened the film), who was raised as a girl by his eccentric Aunt Martha because she just really wanted to raise a girl because she already had a son. Does it make a lot of sense? No. Is it fun? You bet!
Regression
The most recent film (from director Alejandro Amenábar of The Others and Abre los Ojos fame) on this list also has a pretty wild twist. I’m hesitant to spoil it, since it gets released on Blu-Ray on May 10th, but suffice it to say that you probably won’t see this one coming! If you enjoy Emma Watson and/or Satanic cults (and the 90s!) should give this one a watch. It provides an interesting look into the regression therapy movement at the time. That method of therapy is a hypnosis technique utilized by hypnotherapists to help patients remember the perceptions and feelings caused by past events that have an effect on their present illness.
